Medieval: Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Chapter 31: Sharing Wine and Cakes

"Eat Peter's food, wear Peter's clothes, take Peter's axe, and suffer Peter's torments. God is watching over us, sins are being cleansed, all thanks to the Lord. Amen."

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Praise be to God, thank you Peter!"

"Praise be to God, thank you Peter!"

When Peter returned to the camp with his carpenter apprentice Doug, it was just dinnertime. Old Brother Martin was giving a pre-dinner lecture to the seven lumberjacks.

The hymn they were reciting was the Czech dialect version of "Thanksgiving," which Peter had taught them.

This was a rule Peter made to unite people's hearts. Since the territory was newly established, it was estimated that it would take a long time to build a church. In order to appease everyone's faith, Peter decided that everyone would sing "Hymn of Thanksgiving" before dinner every night and hold a communion service on the first Sunday of each month.

Today happens to be Sunday, and it's also the first communion service in the territory. The old monk had prepared the wine and unleavened bread needed for communion while Peter was away, and was just waiting for Peter to return.

When everyone saw Peter return, they quickly bowed, and the ceremony soon began.

Peter and the old monk presided over the ceremony from the stone, while the seven members of the group—Bodina, Pavlyna, Tom, Jerry, Romeo, and Charlie—stood solemnly below. Doug, seeing this, tactfully joined in.

As the only church member among them, old Martin was appointed by Peter to preside over the communion service. He took out a tattered Bible, spread it open in front of his chest, and began to speak in Latin in a way that no one could understand.

It's okay if you don't understand; that's how priests preach in churches. The crowd bowed their heads, clasped their hands together, and silently recited the Lord's name, asking Him to forgive their sins and not punish them by sending them to hell.

After the Latin confessional hymns, which were incomprehensible to most, were recited, the crowd sang the Thanksgiving Hymn again in Czech dialect.

"Eat Peter's food, wear Peter's clothes, take Peter's axe, and suffer Peter's torments. God is watching over us, sins are being cleansed, all thanks to the Lord. Amen."

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

This one is much easier to remember and understand.

After the prayers and songs were sung, it was time for communion. The old monk carried a wooden plate containing many egg-sized bread cakes, which Bodina and Pavlena had baked that afternoon. The old monk distributed them one by one, saying "Christ bless you" with each one he gave.

The person receiving the meal replied, "Thanks be to God."

The old monk distributed the gifts to everyone without exception, including the seven members of Charlie's group who were "prisoners" and Doug, who had just arrived, which moved them deeply.

Then the old monk picked up the wine bottle, poured two glasses of wine, one for himself and one for Peter.

Then he raised the bread and wine, shouting, "This is my body, this is my blood!"

The audience looked up in awe.

"My body was given for you, I suffered for you; my blood was shed for you, to cleanse your sins. Amen."

"Amen!"

The audience lowered their heads and put the wheat cakes on their tongues.

The old monk and Peter did the same, and even raised their wine glasses to drink together.

It went very smoothly, and everyone was very satisfied. Having been stranded in the wilderness for various reasons, they hadn't participated in such a ceremony for a long time, and felt immensely fulfilled.

Just as the old monk was about to announce the end of the ceremony, Peter raised his hand to interrupt him, raising his wine cup and saying, "Why do we have wine while they only have bread?"

"This has been the case for hundreds of years. The Pope once said: Only the Church and nobles are qualified to taste the blood of Christ; commoners do not know how to appreciate it and are not worthy to taste it. This is true in Germany, France, England, Italy, Spain, and other countries."

The old monk explained.

Peter shook his head and said, “Just because all nations are like this, does that necessarily mean it is right? I am blessed by God, who said that although there are different social classes, all souls are equal and free. The Eucharist is God’s gaze upon the souls of believers, and under His gaze, all souls are equal. Furthermore, the Bible never records that only the church and nobles can drink the blood of God, while commoners are only entitled to bread.”

"Huh? Is that so?" The old hermit was somewhat confused. He was a military cultivator, not a scholar of scriptures, so he didn't really know much about this.

"Are we worthy to drink the blood of God?"

"I don't know, this is the first time I've heard of it."

"If it's true, that would be wonderful."

Are all souls equal in God's eyes?

The crowd below the stage buzzed with discussion and whispered among themselves.

"quiet!"

Peter raised his hand to signal, and everyone immediately stopped talking and looked intently at Peter.

Peter continued, “I am a knight blessed by God, acting on God’s will. I must set things right and restore the Eucharist to its original form. Martin, pour me some wine.”

Peter handed over the glass, and Martin reluctantly filled it to the brim.

Then Peter stepped down from the stone platform, held the wine glass to Bodina's lips, and said, "With my blood, I will wash away your sins."

Praise be to Christ!

Bojina was deeply moved; it was the first time in over fifty years that she had tasted wine during communion, and she felt as if her entire soul had been elevated.

Peter then went to Pavlena, held the glass to her lips, and said, "With my blood, I will wash away your sins."

Praise be to Christ!

Pavlina thought of the suffering she had endured, which seemed to vanish in that moment.

Peter then went over to Tom, Jerry, Romeo, the seven-member group of Charlie, and Doug, taking a small sip from each of them, all of them showing satisfied expressions.

Wine can be drunk anytime, but the wine served at communion was a first for them, and they felt a sense of respect.

The communion service concluded with another rendition of the Eucharist.

The effects of the communion ceremony began to show the next day. Everyone was full of energy, and working was no longer a hardship, but a motivation to build their home.

Peter awarded Doug the title of chief carpenter, and under his leadership, new camp houses began to rise from the ground.

Six days later, a flat area with a diameter of 100 meters had been cleared for the new camp. A circle with a radius of 50 meters was drawn in the middle as the activity center, and three 4*4 meter wooden houses and a 15*3 meter Viking longhouse were built around the center.

The house was completed, and everyone happily moved into their new home. Peter, as the leader, had his own cabin; Bodina and Pavlena, as ladies, shared a cabin; the old monk, serving as a clergyman, had his own cabin; and the other 11 shared a Viking longhouse.

With their territory taking shape and the people no longer needing to live a life of hardship, the next step was to continue logging, expanding the area, cultivating wasteland, and building storage rooms, granaries, and farmhouses...

All of this requires more manpower, so it's time to go out and capture another wave of prisoners.

"I suggest we deal with the ulcer on his index finger first. He's vicious and cruel; let's get rid of him and rid the people of this scourge!"

The old monk had high moral standards and a strong sense of chivalry; he couldn't stand people who harmed ordinary people.

"I don't think this is good. The finger ulcer is near Nebakov, which is quite far from us. To get there, we have to go through the crossroads controlled by John the Big Mouth. According to my intelligence, John the Big Mouth is brave and loyal. After we kidnapped Handsome Charlie and his six men, he inquired about our whereabouts and wanted to come and rescue them. If we go through his territory to treat the ulcer, he will definitely interfere, and if he attacks us from behind, we will be in great danger."

Jerry the mouse offered a different opinion, while Tom nodded repeatedly in agreement with his brother's analysis.

"Should we deal with Big Mouth John first, and then the finger ulcer won't come to our aid?"

Romeo asked in confusion.

Jerry shook his finger and said, "No, that guy with the index finger ulcer is cruel, selfish, and ruthless. He's heartless to civilians, heartless to his subordinates, and even more heartless to his allies. He would never act for the sake of the so-called Five Fingers Alliance. On the contrary, a brute like Big Mouth John would abide by the alliance agreement."

Peter nodded and said, "Alright, let's set our target as Big Mouth John. This mission will focus on capturing him alive."

"Big Mouth John's seven heavily armored warriors are not easy to deal with."

Jerry said it was a bit difficult; their arrows might not even be able to penetrate the defenses.

Peter laughed, "So this time we'll outsmart them. Jerry, have you found their camp?"

"Found it, it's on the mountain south of the intersection. I even marked the path up the mountain."

Jerry proudly puffed out his chest, "I, Jerry the Gray Mouse, am the most reliable when it comes to getting things done."

Peter nodded and said, "Very good, we'll act tonight, all the men will be on the job. Bring along the seven of them, including handsome Charlie."

"Charlie and the others? Wouldn't that be a bit risky?"

"Are they trustworthy?"

"What if they run away halfway through, or join forces with the other side?"

Tom and the others expressed their confusion.

"Don't worry, I have my own plans."

Peter said confidently.

He opened his character panel. During his rescue of the carpenter Doug, he had killed two heavily armored bandits, leveling up to lv5. His attribute points were allocated 3:2 to strength and speed, placing his physical attributes among the top tier.

Of the 5 skill points, 2 were used on swordsmanship, but after reaching level 20, it became difficult to level up further. The message indicated that level 20 and above is the Master level, requiring the approval of a Master to embark on the path to becoming a Master. Therefore, for ordinary people, level 20 is already the pinnacle they can reach.

Peter hadn't been thinking about where to use the three skill points, but now he's decided to unlock the new skill Stealth and level it up to level 3 in one go.

One talent point was also used on stealth, unlocking the new talent "Silent Cat Steps".

Silent Catwalk: A white talent. A special movement that allows you to eliminate noise while stealthily moving, coming and going without a sound.
