Hogwarts Summoning Guide
Chapter 402 Teen Hacker
Bai Lin looked up and saw a black boy of about fourteen or fifteen years old standing timidly in front of the door. He was wearing thick glasses and carrying a large bag, seemingly with all the luggage he had taken when he ran away from home.
"Ah!" Sifugar let out a joyful laugh, circling the boy a few times in a space-time unseen by him, and called out to Bai Lin, "Found him! He's the Awakened One!"
Bai Lin was overjoyed and warmly welcomed the boy inside.
"I am the Dream Master, and I hope I can help you." Bai Lin's smiling expression made Jason and Mary, who were standing next to him, shudder, as if they were seeing a creepy uncle luring children to catch goldfish.
The boy sat down on the sofa where the consultation was being conducted, but he refused to put his backpack down and instead held it tightly in his arms.
"You're often plagued by nightmares, aren't you...? Are they some kind of alien monsters that look like octopuses, but are much more evil, attaching themselves to people and eating their brains?" Bai Lin asked bluntly.
The boy exclaimed in surprise, "You already know? I haven't even started talking yet!"
"It is my honor to tell you that we are all the same, we are all Awakened Ones," Bai Lin said affirmatively.
For a child who lacks a sense of security, it's easier to lower their guard by using empathy and saying "we're all the same" rather than adopting a condescending mentor attitude.
The boy's eyes widened as if he were seeing a fellow patient suffering in the same predicament, and tears almost welled up in his eyes.
Awakening is not a blessing from heaven, but a heavy burden.
Those dreams are a projection of information left by the gods in the Earth's protective mechanism. They describe in detail the horrors of the ancient gods. In the dreams, the awakened ones will see how the ancient gods' minions come to Earth, how they breed "yellow marks," and how octopus monsters are born to parasitize humans, eat their brains, and then take their place.
However, due to the varying processing abilities of the human brain, this information is broken down into many fragmented pieces, and in the end, people can only remember the gruesome images. Dreaming about it once is one thing, but to see the parasitic process as soon as you close your eyes is psychologically unbearable for most people, and over time, it can lead to mental breakdown.
Yuxi and Qiqi were both deeply affected by the dream, and it only disappeared when they were by Bai Lin's side. Those Awakened who didn't find Bai Lin fared much worse; they either became completely numb or were locked up in hospitals as mental patients. That's why Hecilis suggested searching in mental hospitals. But if those people were truly driven insane, how could they help Bai Lin fight the Hastur cultists lurking in America's upper echelons?
Bai Lin stepped forward and gently patted the boy's shoulder, telling him to close his eyes and try to fall asleep.
With Bai Lin's comforting words, the boy relaxed more than ever before and quickly fell asleep. He slept for more than an hour before slowly waking up.
"How did you do that, sir? I haven't slept this well in a long time!" the boy exclaimed in surprise.
"It's no trouble at all... As long as you receive treatment for a period of time, you will say goodbye to those nightmares," Bai Lin said kindly.
The boy suddenly looked embarrassed and said, "Um... sir, but I don't have any money... I don't know how to pay your consultation fee..."
Bai Lin shrugged. This boy was either a rebellious teenager who had run away from home or a homeless orphan; he was unlikely to be able to help him. However, helping him was a simple matter, so he might as well consider it an act of kindness.
Remember this name: . Remember this domain name: . Good books won't lead you astray.
"It's alright. I was just doing a free clinic to help people like me who are suffering from nightmares..." Bai Lin said calmly.
The boy, however, was unwilling to accept charity for nothing. After thinking for a moment, he said, "I can work for you! I know many things!"
Jason scoffed, clearly thinking that this kid with thick glasses was just an ordinary nerd, and that such a Muggle was worthless in his eyes.
Mary, however, was quite happy and offered the boy a glass of water, perhaps because they were both Black and she was naturally more friendly.
The boy briefly introduced himself; his name was Philo, and he had dropped out of junior high. Bai Lin gleaned some information from his words: the boy's father was probably involved in organized crime and hadn't done anything good. In New York at that time, very few Black people followed the right path. He didn't want to follow in his father's footsteps, so he ran away from home.
"What's in here?" Jason asked, pointing to Philo's large bag.
"You may not have seen this before... This is my treasure..." Philo hugged the big bag tightly, but in the end she still satisfied their curiosity and took out a black machine from it.
"This is... a laptop?" Bai Lin exclaimed in surprise. To be honest, Toshiba of Japan launched the T1000 portable computer in 1985, while America only launched a bulkier laptop in 1996. However, these things had very limited computing power, so they could not watch videos, shop online, play games, surf the internet, or use Facebook. Therefore, they were basically not used by the general public and were considered rare items.
Although Philo's machine had a rough design and lacked a standard chassis, with many components exposed, Bai Lin still felt that it looked more advanced than portable computers of the same era.
"A laptop?" Philo was taken aback, then exclaimed with sudden realization, "That's a very apt description! It would be wonderful if computers could one day be as small as laptops!"
Philo then pulled out a rather rudimentary-looking modem, or "cat," and explained, "As long as you plug it in with a phone line, this can do a lot of things, even hack into other people's computers!"
"Damn, you're a hacker!" Bai Lin exclaimed in surprise. In this era, the internet was not very developed, and hackers were extremely rare. Many people started learning about computers from scratch, and all hacking programs had to be written by themselves.
Philo was somewhat surprised that Bai Lin seemed to be very familiar with her best expertise in cybersecurity, and suddenly felt like she had met a kindred spirit.
Jason and Mary, being young wizards, naturally had no interest in these Muggle gadgets.
After Bai Lin sent the two clowns away and the clinic closed, Filo had nowhere to stay, so Bai Lin lent Filo the place that Lao Pan had arranged for him. Of course, he was going to go and cuddle with Lulu that night (evil, evil...).
When Philo learned that Bai Lin was a powerful wizard, she was almost scared to death, and then she was incredibly envious.
Of course, what surprised Philo even more was the house-elf's cooking skills. He felt like he ate the amount of food he usually eats in one dinner, and he even licked the plate three times.
After Philo finished eating, Bai Lin solemnly explained the reality to him: Your dreams are all real. The Hastur cultists have already taken over the human population and are trying to control the entire country from the top.
This was obviously nonsense to Philo, but Bai Lin was prepared. He took out a USB drive and handed it to Philo.
