Chapter 288 The Source of Chaos

The plane landed smoothly at the airport in the northwesternmost province. The runway was empty with only a few planes, and the terminal building consisted of just a few two-story buildings. There were no ground vehicles either. Yan Nishuang looked at the thin layer of fine sand under her feet and then turned her gaze to the towering mountains to the northwest.
It wasn't that Yan Nishuang was unwilling to use a more "magical" way of traveling; it was just that this was the most mysterious place in the East. The Floo Network couldn't connect, and Apparition would be deviated due to some kind of magnetic field interference. Even the most powerful wizards could only come by train or plane.
Of course, this wasn't their destination yet. Next, Yan Nishuang would have to take a bus for a whole day and then hike up the mountain. She flipped her right hand over, revealing a very old but still exquisitely crafted compass in her palm. The compass had hundreds of markings around its circumference, marked with fine characters in small seal script, and inlaid in the center was a crystal-clear glass. If one looked closely, a magnificent palace on a mountaintop seemed to float within the glass.
"Xi Kunlun... I'm here..." Yan Nishuang thought to herself.
At this moment, Bai Lin was still floating in chaos. The light around him was very weak, and he could only vaguely see that he was shrouded in a large black mist. It seemed that something was flying past him quickly, but he could not feel the speed of flight.
In this strange space, Bai Lin found that apart from thinking, his limbs seemed to be difficult to control, let alone mobilize the magic or chaotic power within his body, which made him feel a little powerless and panicked.
"What the hell are they trying to do? This is never going to end!" Bai Lin didn't know how long he had been in this chaos, but at least a day had passed, yet the scenery around him had hardly changed. He couldn't help but complain.
"This is a strange wormhole, it's not easy for it to open once! You're acting innocent after getting the benefits!" Ye Kong's voice suddenly rang in Bai Lin's ears, startling him. He hadn't expected that Ye Kong had established a mental connection with him and could communicate directly in his ear.
"How much longer until we get there?" Bai Lin asked, pouting.
Night Sky seemed to ponder for a moment before saying, "The Strangers Wormhole is a historical fragment leading to a parallel world. Within these historical fragments lies the answer you seek—the Source of Chaos."
"The source of chaos? What is that? What form does it take?" Bai Lin asked, looking completely bewildered.
"I don't know. The source of chaos takes different forms in different historical fragments. It could be a ball of fire, a wine glass, or a person. You have to find it yourself!" Night Sky said. "You have 50 days. Whether you find it or not, I must drag you back by then, or you will be forever trapped in history. Do you understand?"
"I understand... but..." Bai Lin said somewhat strangely.
"Do you have any further questions?" Night Sky asked.
"But, Night Sky Mentor, I didn't expect your Chinese to be so good..." Bai Lin exclaimed.
"...Stop talking nonsense...We're almost there!" Yozora said irritably.
Before Bai Lin could answer, he suddenly felt a tremendous force pulling on his feet, causing him to fall through a gap in the black mist.
Over the years, Bai Lin had seen the world and experienced countless battles, but he was still greatly alarmed by this sudden free fall and couldn't help but scream.
The freefall process lasted about ten seconds. Suddenly, Bai Lin's eyes lit up. Before he could see his surroundings clearly, he landed headfirst on a relatively soft patch of grass.
"My old neck and back!" Bai Lin was so dizzy from the impact that he saw stars, but the sensation in his body told him that he had a minor sprain, but it wasn't serious.
"Mentor Night Sky? Are you still there?" Bai Lin rubbed his neck as he got up from the grass and couldn't help but ask. However, Night Sky did not respond to him, and he clearly felt that the feeling of spiritual connection had disappeared.
"Okay, I'm stuck here..." Bai Lin shrugged and accepted reality. He looked around. The sky was covered with dark clouds, as if it was about to rain. He seemed to have landed in a hilly area. The air was a bit chilly. The surrounding hills were covered with lush vegetation, but he didn't see any houses.
Bai Lin stretched his limbs, and his magic and disordered elemental energy reconnected. He immediately felt much better and appeared on the top of a nearby hill in a flash. Looking down the hill, he saw a muddy path faintly visible among the trees.
"I need to figure out where I am first..." Under the influence of the disordered elemental energy, Bai Lin's body floated up and flew to the side of the path at the foot of the mountain.
There were two deep ruts and animal hoof prints on the path. Bai Lin had read a lot of books during his student days and had a wealth of historical knowledge. However, in his opinion, the two ruts were very close to each other, about 1 meter apart. Bai Lin knew that the Central Plains region of the East had implemented the "standardization of cart tracks" as early as the Qin Dynasty, and that the ruts of carts in later generations were generally about 1213 meters long.
Just as he was wondering, a horse's neigh came from not far away. He walked towards the sound and sure enough, a carriage was coming from the end of the road, with several bald men carrying bundles beside it.
These people were short and thin, but Bai Lin recognized them at a glance from their attire and hairstyles as ancient neon!
The other party had obviously seen him too, but the group didn't seem too surprised. The driver even drove over excitedly.
"Greetings, Your Excellency!" The coachman jumped down from the seat from a distance, took small steps to Bai Lin a few meters away, and bowed.
"Um... Hello, hello... Is there something you need?" Bai Lin didn't know how to start a conversation for a moment. He thought to himself, since we're not on Earth, why not just put a knife to his neck and ask him for some information? But seeing how polite the other person was, he suddenly felt embarrassed to do it.
The coachman respectfully said, "I am a servant of the Ono family. May I ask if you are a Tang Dynasty traveler under Elder Fukumoto?"
Bai Lin was taken aback, somewhat confused by the question, but he quickly guessed the era he had arrived in. Sure enough, it was a fragment of history; he had actually traveled to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.
During the mid-Tang Dynasty, there was increased civilian exchange between the East and Japan. Because Japan's Buddhist precepts were not fully developed, Japanese monks accompanied envoys to the Tang Dynasty to invite the eminent monk Jianzhen to travel east to spread Buddhism. Master Jianzhen subsequently made six voyages to Japan, bringing with him much of his culture, including Buddhism, art, and medicine. From then on, Japan began to imitate the Tang Dynasty in every aspect, from its systems and architectural styles to its etiquette and lifestyle.
After Master Jianzhen, many people from the Tang Dynasty followed the path of their predecessors and crossed the sea to Japan. However, they were generally monks or merchants. After the fall of the Tang Dynasty, various warlords rose up in the Central Plains, leading to the chaotic Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. The wars also caused many warriors to cross the sea to Japan. They were called "sea travelers" by the Japanese, meaning swordsmen who came across the sea.
Compared to the Japanese of this era, Bai Lin was very tall. Even without swords, his clothes were strange. However, the coachman from the Ono family immediately recognized Bai Lin as a merchant from Tang Dynasty, which showed he had good judgment.
"Of course, of course," Bai Lin said, his mind racing. He returned the greeting and said, "To be honest, I am indeed a martial artist from the Tang Kingdom who came across the sea. Like you, I came to pay my respects to Master Fuyuan, but I unfortunately got lost..."
The coachman suddenly realized what was going on, but his enthusiasm remained undiminished. "My master is always hospitable. If you don't mind, why don't you come along?"
