Chapter 236 Battle of the Docks
"Is everything alright?" Nicole looked out the car window and watched the elderly people chatting and laughing as they went in and out. Many of them were holding palm-leaf fans and walking their Chihuahuas or Schnauzers slowly along the roadside, as if to tell them that it was safe here and nothing had happened.
Just as everyone breathed a sigh of relief, and Bai Lin was beginning to wonder where the enemy would attack if not here, a sudden, extremely ominous premonition rushed into his heart, and the hairs on the back of his neck stood up. He grabbed Yan Nishuang's hand.
Before Yan Nishuang could react, a scream came from deep within the dock, as if someone had seen something terrifying.
"WC! They're here!" The two Apparated out instantly, leaving the three young people in the car exchanging bewildered glances. Nicole said enviously, "I want to get my Apparition license too... It's so convenient to just go whenever I want..."
Alex couldn't help but pour cold water on her enthusiasm, saying, "Even if we pass the licensing exam, it would take us several years to reach the captain's level..."
But Hiroyuki Edogawa retorted, "You guys aren't really just going to sit in the car and wait, are you? This is a once-in-a-lifetime case, and you're just going to do nothing? That fat old man (Yarlin) probably took all the elite members of the execution team with him, right? Are you just going to leave Big Sister all alone?"
After all, they are all young people, and they can't resist being provoked. Alex and Nicole are both formal employees of the Hong Kong Executive Team. Are they not as good as a fifteen or sixteen-year-old kid?
The two exchanged a glance, gritted their teeth, pulled out their wands, and immediately got out of the car. Hiroyuki Edogawa also took out his wand and followed closely behind. The current situation was no longer within the scope of school rules. This was the first time he had been so close to the scene of such a major case, and he might even have to fight a dark wizard. All of this made Hiroyuki Edogawa extremely excited.
When the three of them rushed into the pier gate, there was already a commotion inside. Some unsuspecting citizens were still going in, while many elderly people were running out in a panic, carrying their cats and dogs. The gate was immediately blocked by the crowd, noisy and bustling, with the barking of various dogs mixed in, making it even noisier than a vegetable market.
Finally, an older woman screamed, "Monster!! Run!"
People were stunned. When ordinary people hear such words, they will always have to react. Their first thought is whether it is a hoax. But seeing more and more people running out, they would rather believe it than not. Only Alex and his two companions went against the flow of people and rushed inside.
An explosion suddenly occurred on the western side of the dock, followed by flames. It was likely that someone had knocked over a gas cylinder used by dockworkers for cooking. More and more screams and cries of pain came from deep within the dock, indicating that something was attacking citizens walking their dogs.
The three followed the sound. Edogawa Hiroyuki saw a ladder leading to the top of the container and climbed up it. He believed that he could see more clearly from a higher position. Although he was prepared for battle, he still wanted to find out the truth about his target.
Nicole and Alex weaved through the surging crowd, making sure to help an elderly citizen who had fallen to their feet. After finally rounding a bend, they reached the platform on the embankment, and what they saw there truly startled them.
Several canine-like monsters, as big as calves, were tearing and biting wildly through the crowd. People were being pounced on and torn to pieces, their fates unknown. Many others were knocked into the sea, but they were probably lucky. Living in a coastal city like Hong Kong, there are very few people who can't swim. Everyone quickly swam away to a safer distance.
What shocked Nicole and Alex was not only the physique of these canine monsters, but also their dark red and blackish-brown bodies. They had no skin, their muscle tissue exposed to the air, and a strange, viscous liquid dripped from their bodies. Their eyes were bloodshot, and they seemed to be insane; to them, these human citizens were nothing more than delicious roasted meat.
The two novices were stunned. They had no idea what the monster in front of them was or what spell to use to deal with it. If Bai Lin knew their mentality, he would definitely be furious. This is a limitation of the Harry Potter magic system, or rather, a limitation of the Defense Against the Dark Arts course taught at Hogwarts. Hogwarts has obviously had a deep influence on Hong Kong magic schools, and the courses are probably directly copied.
The limitation of these Dark Magic Defense spells is that they require a specific spell to counter each type of dark creature. For example, you would use "Funny Funny" to deal with a Boggart, "Summon Saddle" to deal with a Kelpie, and "Patron Charm" to deal with a Dementor. Most wizards never encounter a Boggart in their lifetime, so their "Funny Funny" spell would be wasted. And spells like the Patronus Charm, if not practiced and used regularly, would likely be completely forgotten by wizards.
Conversely, if you learn a hundred defensive spells against dark creatures, but happen to encounter the hundred and first one, then sorry, you'll be completely stumped. This is why hundreds of wizards once went to hunt down an adult succubus, suffering heavy casualties. Because there wasn't a single spell specifically designed to counter the succubus, those hundreds of wizards probably tried all sorts of fancy spells they knew, only to be caught off guard by the succubus's area-of-effect attack.
These "zombie dogs" in front of them were clearly monsters they had never seen before. Even though Nicole and Alex had excellent grades in school and had undergone intensive combat training when they joined the company, their adaptability was practically nonexistent.
A zombie dog looked up and saw Nicole. Speaking of Nicole's appearance, she was the quiet and lovely type of a well-behaved girl, with a slightly chubby figure. Of course, she didn't have the figure of Yan Nishuang or Qiqi, but this slightly chubby figure was exactly what zombie dogs loved. Sure enough, the zombie dog didn't hesitate to leap, jumping seven or eight meters away, directly pinning an fleeing dog to the ground. However, it didn't lower its head to bite, but instead shoved aside the people next to it and leaped up again, pouncing straight at Nicole.
Alex, showing some manly courage, grabbed Nicole and pulled her behind him, raised his wand, and without caring whether ordinary citizens would see, cast "Knockout!" on the zombie dog.
However, the Stunning Curse struck the zombie dog, leaving it almost unharmed. Alex could even see human remains hidden in a mass of bloody matter within the zombie dog's gaping maw. Its gleaming fangs seemed to be telling him that it would soon be his turn.
But at the crucial moment, a huge white shadow descended from the sky, blocking Alex's path. From their angle, all they could see was a gigantic animal, much larger than a zombie dog, with exceptionally luxurious, soft white fur. And in their ears rang Bai Lin's voice: "Didn't I tell you not to get out of the car...? Even if you did get out, don't just stand there..."
Meanwhile, Hiroyuki Edogawa had climbed onto a tall shipping container and could see the situation on the seawall clearly. Although he was shocked by the giant zombie dogs that were killing civilians, he was even more astonished to see Shirarin riding a huge "white husky" with a sword in hand into the battlefield.
"What kind of magic is this? I've never even heard of it!" Hiroyuki Edogawa felt like he had entered a blind spot in his knowledge.
Instead of retreating, Bai Lin rode Xue Feng forward, his figure flashing past the zombie dog. Alex quickly pulled Nicole aside, watching as the giant zombie dog crashed into the spot where they had just been standing, splattering blood everywhere. It didn't get up, because Bai Lin had already used a swift and deadly strike to split the zombie dog's head in two during their brush.
After killing one zombie dog, Bai Lin and Xue Feng rushed towards another zombie dog without stopping. Just as the zombie dog was about to meet them, Bai Lin threw out a Death Coil, which blew half of the zombie dog's body apart.
"WTF!" Standing atop the tall shipping container, Hiroyuki Edogawa, Alex, and Nicole uttered these three words in different dialects to express their shock. If what they learned at magic school were small tricks for dealing with dark creatures or targeted spells, what Bai Lin showed them was absolute killing power. No matter what kind of monster you are, even a fire dragon, one Death Coil is enough to make you suffer.
"Is this really Brother Bai's strength?" Edogawa Hiroyuki felt quite excited, but also a little uneasy. He often joked that he might one day be crushed and humiliated by Bai Lin, and then torn to pieces.
He couldn't afford to continue his wild thoughts, because the battle on the other side caught his attention. There were already several zombie dogs there, attacking and biting civilians along the way. After they caught their prey, they grew even larger. But then, a figure shrouded in white light suddenly appeared.
Edogawa Hiroyuki's jaw practically dropped to his knees, for he saw Yan Nishuang descend like a fairy. She floated more than three meters above the ground, her entire body enveloped in flowing white light. Holding a jade pen in her hand, she pointed in front of her and cried out, "Divine Weapon Talisman! Demon-Slaying Sword!"
Under Edogawa Hiroyuki's envious gaze, Yan Nishuang's jade pen had already drawn a talisman in mid-air. The talisman's light shifted and transformed into an ancient giant sword more than two meters long, composed of faint white light. If Bai Lin were present, he could already see that this demon-slaying sword was more materialized than the one he had seen during the New Year, proving that Yan Nishuang's talisman magic had made further progress in the past six months.
Once Yan Nishuang made her move, the outcome of the battle was no longer in doubt. The zombie dogs were clearly attracted by Yan Nishuang in the white light, and they rushed over one by one, trying to jump into the air and pull her down to feast on her. However, they became live targets for the Demon-Slaying Sword. One by one, they jumped up and were cleaved into pieces by the Demon-Slaying Sword.
"I want to learn this move too!" Edogawa Hiroyuki's mind was filled with Yan Nishuang's powerful magic weapon and Bai Lin's summoned beast. Suddenly, he felt that none of the "magical" magic he had learned at the magic school was worth it anymore. His memory, analytical skills, and insight, which he was so proud of, were also worthless. He even felt a little discouraged. In the face of such powerful forces, were schemes and plans really important?
Ordinary citizens retreated like a tide, leaving only the unfortunate citizens who had been attacked by the zombie dogs and the corpses of the zombie dogs that had been killed, as well as a sticky bloodstain on the dock. Bai Lin and Yan Nishuang surrounded them from the east and west, and all ten giant zombie dogs were killed in less than five minutes.
Alex swallowed hard. He believed that an ordinary wizard would have a slim chance of survival against a zombie monster with speed and strength far exceeding that of ordinary people, and immune to spells like the Stunning Curse. He and Nicole weren't too embarrassed. But comparisons are odious. Compared to Bai Lin and Yan Nishuang, he felt utterly useless.
Bai Lin was in a bad mood. He glanced around and saw that even though they had arrived as quickly as possible and joined the battle, there were still at least thirty mutilated corpses on the dock. These were all local residents who had just wanted to take a stroll after dinner, but they hadn't expected to encounter this group of vicious men.
Bai Lin quickly spotted the suspicious container, which had no markings or even a number and was mixed in with a pile of goods. The door was wide open, and the inside was covered in blood and the torn fur of dogs. It seemed that these zombie dogs had "transformed" inside the container. As they grew larger, they shed their skin like snakes, which is why their muscle tissue was exposed to the air.
For zombie dogs, skin is indeed dispensable. The skin of ordinary humans or animals is mainly for protecting against harmful substances from the outside world, such as ultraviolet rays, bacteria, and viruses. However, these are obviously not a problem for zombie dogs whose bodies are covered with mutated viruses.
Looking at the zombie dog's corpse that had been hacked to death, Bai Lin thought to himself, "Finally, I have something to use as a sample! I should be able to find a laboratory to use it. We should be able to isolate the virus strain and perhaps develop an antidote." In the ordinary world, developing an antidote for a new virus would require the use of countless biological laboratories around the world and would take several years, and success would not be guaranteed. Even if it were successful, the virus would have already mutated.
But this is a magical world, and the process of creating potions is full of idealistic theories. Who knows, it might just create a miracle!
Bai Lin put aside these thoughts, but he still felt very uneasy. The other side went to great lengths to lure the tiger away from the mountain, and even carried out a suicide airstrike to prevent the Hong Kong law enforcement team from returning. How could it be just to release a few dogs?
Even without the wizards Bai Lin and Yan Nishuang who were unexpectedly left behind, these zombie dogs would have encountered the Royal Police Force's resistance after rushing out of the dock. As long as they outnumbered the zombie dogs and concentrated their fire, they could have blown their heads off. However, this would have resulted in the deaths of many more civilians.
Bai Lin rode Xue Feng along the embankment toward the open container, feeling that things were definitely not that simple.
Just as he walked past a pile of human corpses, feeling a tightness in his chest, a movement suddenly occurred from the pile of human corpses behind him. A small man covered in blood crawled out from the pile of corpses and emitted a beam of emerald green magical energy towards Bai Lin's back.
