Chapter 182 Arrival in England
With Yan Mu's explanation, Bai Lin finally understood that this was a very secretive project in the East.
In the West, due to the long history of witch extermination (mainly because of several major plagues in European history, such as leprosy and the Black Death, which led Muggles to generally believe that they were plots by wizards to exterminate ordinary people, thus forming a long-term antagonism), wizards intentionally avoided living in the lives of Muggles and were strictly forbidden from performing magic in front of Muggles. Therefore, there were very few topics that wizards and Muggles studied together.
The situation in the East was different. Half a century of war had caused heavy casualties among both ordinary people and mages in the East. After the war, they would naturally work together to seek the revival of the East.
However, this cooperation has been widely criticized by Western wizards, who have also smeared it with various accusations, a classic case of sour grapes.
Due to international pressure, most of these collaborative projects in the East have been carried out in secret. For example, the medical research center where Yan Mu is located uses magical potions combined with technological power to develop a treatment method. As long as the internal organs are not damaged and there are no severed limbs, soaking in it for a week can heal any external injury (unexpectedly, the cat claw scar on Bai Lin's forehead did not disappear, but became clearer instead).
"It's still in the experimental stage... Hmm, judging from your appearance, the experiment should have been successful..." The scene of being examined by a group of graduate students led by Yan's mother made Bai Lin so embarrassed that he could dig a duplex apartment out of his toes.
But as Yan's mother said, that day, besides rescuing Yan Nishuang and Youqian herself, and Zhuo Bi taking Qiqi away in time, only the eight wounded who had been injured in the previous battle with the ghosts and had evacuated the cemetery area in advance survived. A total of thirty-five mages from the Execution Department sacrificed their lives, making it a truly Pyrrhic victory.
This incident directly reached the highest level of the Eastern Magic Management Committee, shocking the entire nation. In the end, Yan Nishuang had to take the blame and was demoted from provincial squad leader to group leader. The demotion didn't bother Yan Nishuang much, but the fact that she had led so many colleagues to the battlefield and failed to save them left her heartbroken. She locked herself in her room for many days and refused to come out.
It wasn't until her mother told her that Bai Lin had woken up that Yan Nishuang, with deep dark circles under her eyes, came over to see him.
The death of her colleague was a huge blow to Yan Nishuang, especially Huang Chenghua, who had always been running around and charging into battle, and also lost his life in the final black fire. Bai Lin was also quite saddened by this, but what Bai Lin felt more deeply was hatred for Fujiwara Ichiura.
Fujiwara Ichiura fled without a trace afterward. For a master of spatial magic like him, if he really wanted to escape, there was no way to accurately locate him at that time (1995). The only thing to do was to record him and look for clues.
"You should try to persuade Ni Shuang more, it's your duty!" Mother Yan said coldly to Bai Lin. She already knew the whole story, that it was Bai Lin who persuaded Yan Ni Shuang to stake out the Sun family cemetery. If it weren't for his insistence, Fujiwara Ichiura would have indeed rescued Sun Xue Li, but they would likely have gone to other countries to cause trouble, instead of the Executive Department and Yan Ni Shuang suffering such losses.
Although it was somewhat unreasonable, it was normal for Yan Nishuang's mother to have such thoughts. Bai Lin found Yan Nishuang alone and leaned against the railing of a secluded balcony in the research institute, finally able to chat for a bit.
"Are you going back to England?" Yan Nishuang asked in a low voice, her throat a little hoarse.
"There's another match to participate in in February... I can only stay for a week at most... I'll be leaving after the New Year." Bai Lin counted the days. It was already mid-January. He had to rush back to Hogwarts before Easter to participate in the second match of the Triwizard Tournament. He didn't know what new tricks "Old Barty" would pull because of his participation, so he had to go back in advance to make some preparations.
"Oh..." Yan Nishuang muttered, leaning on the railing, her gaze filled with sorrow as she looked outside.
"I'll be back during summer vacation!" Bai Lin said decisively, "I need your help with many things!"
"I'm so tired... You're not the Bai Lin I needed to protect a few years ago... You don't need my help anymore..." Yan Nishuang's tone was somewhat dejected and disheartened, lacking the confidence and decisiveness she once had.
"Whether you participate or not... I will go to Japan during the summer vacation. I must find Fujiwara Ichiura and give him the punishment he deserves!" Bai Lin's tone was resolute. He had never hated anyone so much, especially a Japanese person.
Yan Nishuang was startled. She propped herself up and said in a panic, "You're going to Japan? Ah... you can't go! Fujiwara Ichiura will ambush you! There are many..."
Bai Lin, for some unknown reason, suddenly pulled Yan Nishuang into his arms. Yan Nishuang gently pushed him away, but Bai Lin didn't let go, so she let him hold her and even reached out to hug him back.
"Ni Shuang... I know you care about me..." Bai Lin whispered in Yan Ni Shuang's ear, "But the enemy I'm destined to face... is a hundred times more vicious than Fujiwara Ichiura. The mages who sacrificed themselves in the Execution Department... I'm also very saddened, especially Team Leader Huang... But I can't give up... I can't let those bad guys and monsters succeed. I still have to protect the whole..."
Suddenly, Bai Lin's lips were sealed by Yan Nishuang's lips. Her lips were icy cold, and tears welled up in the corners of her eyes, but the heroic spirit that originally belonged to Yan Nishuang was slowly returning to her radiance.
"I'll help you!" Yan Nishuang said softly.
"I haven't told you about the enemy I'm facing yet..." Bai Lin said, somewhat surprised.
"No matter who it is... I'll help you... Don't abandon me again..." Yan Nishuang whispered, burying her face in Bai Lin's shoulder.
Bai Lin held her tightly, as if at this moment, the two of them were transferring their strength to each other.
In the following days, Bai Lin did not have a good time, because the Executive Department sent a team to conduct a special investigation on him. This incident had caused such serious consequences that the Executive Department would not let go of any clue, even if it was Bai Lin who seemed to have just happened to be there and was completely "acting bravely for justice".
Bai Lin was released on the day before the Lunar New Year. The executive department did not frame him maliciously. Instead, they wanted to persuade him to return to China to develop his career. As for his role in this incident, they ultimately labeled him a "jinx".
The Executive Department retrieved all of Bai Lin's information and discovered that when he arrived at Hogwarts, the Death Eaters organized a terrorist attack that bombarded Hogwarts; when he went to the Magical Zoo in Paris, the Magical Zoo experienced the terrorist attack of "illegal Animagus wizards hypnotizing goblin sorcerers"; it was rumored that he was also involved in the massacre of a small village in Italy; when he returned to the East, he encountered this incident of "an evil neon sorcerer manipulating an Eastern Squib boy into becoming a serial killer"... Although he was not the murderer,
Moreover, he is actively fighting the murderer, but wherever he goes, disaster follows. What else could he be but a jinx?
"The word 'jinx' sounds awful. It should be Conan..." Bai Lin muttered as he walked out of the Southwest Law Enforcement Department building.
Back in his hometown, he finally enjoyed a proper Spring Festival like an ordinary person. Youxi and the other team members also experienced the atmosphere of the Eastern New Year. Zhuo Bi, in particular, said that after eating authentic Sichuan cuisine, he wanted to go back to the East with Bai Lin for the New Year next year, but Bai Lin gave him a big eye roll.
On the first and second days of the Lunar New Year, Bai Lin accompanied his parents to visit relatives. His aunts and uncles, upon learning that he was an associate professor in Europe, had earned a large sum of pounds, and had brought back a French girlfriend, showered him with praise. Finally, Bai Lin also brought gifts to Yan Nishuang's house to pay his respects for the New Year, shared a bottle of Maotai with Yan Nishuang's father, and then boarded a plane to London.
The journey back was uneventful. Zhuo Bi was not as anxious as he was on his first flight. Instead, just like when Youxi came, he found a classic black and white movie from the 1960s and enjoyed watching it immensely.
Yuqian clung tightly to Bai Lin's arm the whole time, almost thinking that Bai Lin wasn't planning to go back to Europe, but instead wanted to elope with Yan Nishuang.
Qiqi's expression remained calm, but she kept glancing at Bai Lin out of the corner of her eye, her thoughts unknown.
Because of the time difference, they set off in the morning, flew for twelve hours, and arrived in London just past noon.
As soon as Bai Lin stepped off the boarding car and his feet touched solid ground, a piece of paper appeared in front of him, fluttering gently in the wind. Bai Lin quickly grabbed it.
To Kelling White:
Professor, Harry has been acting strangely lately. Please return to Hogwarts as soon as you get back to England.
Hermione Granger
These communication slips of paper seem unable to fly to the East, since Bai Lin left the UK by plane. The slips of paper must have been very "intelligent" and "staking out" at the airport, similar to receiving a text message as soon as you enter a service area.
However, Bai Lin still took Hermione's information very seriously. What could possibly happen to Harry at this time? Could Barty be up to something new?
Bai Lin led his team directly into the airport restroom to summon Phineas. Bai Lin had also pondered how house-elves and their masters could achieve such a telepathic connection. However, this reason was entirely idealistic and had no scientific basis whatsoever. As long as a house-elf recognized someone as its master, it could hear the master's inner voice and accurately pinpoint the master's location through this voice. Let's just consider it a subjective setting by the original author or the creator of house-elves.
Five minutes later, Finnis appeared directly in the bathroom. After more than three minutes of Apparition, Bai Lin and Youxi appeared in the Hogwarts staff lounge, while Zhuo Bi and Qi Qi were sent to the vineyard that Bai Lin had rented in the suburbs of London.
The lounge was empty. Bai Lin calculated the time and figured the professors had all gone to class. Otherwise, if someone saw him Apparating over, they would inevitably say a few words to him. After all, theoretically, Hogwarts does not allow Apparition, and using house-elves to teleport is still a little secret.
"Harry should be in class right now, right?" Bai Lin asked Youxi.
Yuxi was actually a little confused as to why Bai Lin treated Harry differently, as if he always valued him highly. Yuxi had heard about Harry's special status, but Voldemort mainly committed evil deeds in England, and the French wizarding world was not so afraid of him, so the boy who survived the disaster was not so magical.
"This afternoon should be Professor Snape's Potions class!" Yuxi immediately said. As Bai Lin's assistant, she had put in a lot of effort into the teaching at Hogwarts and was much more attentive than Bai Lin, the carefree assistant professor.
"Let's go take a look..." Bai Lin waved his hand and led Youxi out of the faculty lounge.
I crept up to the window of the Potions classroom and, through a small crack, I could see Snape teaching the fourth-year students from Slytherin and Gryffindor how to concoct a potion.
Bai Lin looked around and quickly found Harry.
Harry looked terrible; he seemed to have lost several pounds, had deep dark circles under his eyes, sunken eyes, looked listless, had a vacant stare, and chapped lips, as if he had just been seriously ill.
This state of mind was certainly not good for Potions class, and Snape repeatedly called out, "Potter!...Potter!...Potter!" before giving him a stern reprimand, which caused a burst of laughter from the Slytherin students.
"Professor Snape seems to be treating Harry very badly..." Yuxi said very quietly.
"Ha..." Bai Lin couldn't help but chuckle, "He's probably the best person the whole school has for him... even better than Dumbledore and Hagrid..."
Finally, get out of class ended, but Harry was kept after school by Snape and was sure to get a scolding. However, Snape handed Harry a small, pale yellow bottle of potion. The bottle was quite exquisite and looked very valuable. However, Harry was a little absent-minded and casually stuffed the potion into his pocket before walking out dejectedly.
As soon as they stepped out of the classroom, Ron put his arm around Harry's shoulder, and Hermione took his arm from the other. Malfoy witnessed this and couldn't resist teasing him. But before he could speak, Hermione pointed her wand at him and said, "Get lost, Malfoy, if you don't want to turn into a toad!"
"Don't think I'm afraid of you, Mudblood!" Malfoy muttered, but he didn't dare let Hermione hear him and walked away sheepishly. The silly Goyle and Crabbe didn't forget to show off their arm muscles to Hermione.
Hermione rolled her eyes. Goyle and Crabbe's muscles were useless against magic; they were just turned into slightly stronger toads.
Ron gave Hermione a thumbs up. After Harry "fell ill," Hermione was like a frightened hedgehog. She seemed to sense some danger and became very aggressive. Normally, she would never threaten Malfoy.
"Where are we going?" Harry asked, realizing his two best friends hadn't taken him back to the dorm. He was exhausted and had a terrible headache.
"That man is back. He wants us to take you to Hagrid," Ron whispered.
"Professor Kaelin?" Harry seemed to perk up a bit.
"I think he's better able to solve your problem than Sirius," Hermione said. "He's always been a prophet." Hermione's last sentence was somewhat sarcastic, as she herself scoffed at divination.
