Chapter 123 Slytherin's Locket
"Enough! Kreacher!" Blake stepped forward and yanked Kreacher away, but Kreacher was quite agitated and struggled desperately in Blake's grasp.
Bai Lin took out the animal-catching rope and tied Kreacher up tightly, then instructed the bruised and battered Phineas to keep an eye on him.
"We'll have to confront him later. Mr. Black probably won't believe me if I'm the only one who says it!" Bai Lin said, shrugging. After all, he couldn't explain how he knew so much inside information, but it was much more reliable to hear it from Kreacher, who had experienced it firsthand.
"I hope you can actually find what you're talking about, or don't blame me for being impolite!" Blake sneered.
"Relax, I've come all this way, not to chat with you!" Bai Lin pouted. "Lead the way, to your brother's room!"
Blake wrinkled his nose, picked up Kreacher who was still wriggling around, and cast a silencing spell on him to stop him from cursing.
Blake led Bai Lin straight up to the fifth floor. No wonder the place was so dilapidated and messy. It was really difficult for Kreacher to manage such a large building with more than ten rooms by himself. Moreover, Kreacher regarded many strange things as treasures because they were all relics of his previous owners.
The walls of the stairwell were covered with the heads of Kreacher's ancestors. This was Kreacher's wish: that one day when he could no longer work, his master would cut off his head and hang it here. This wasn't just brainwashing; it was downright perversion.
There were only three rooms on the fifth floor, belonging to Sirius Black, his deceased mother, and his brother. Black stopped in front of one of the doors, and Bai Lin saw a sign on it that read, "Very Impressive."
Entry is prohibited without the express permission of the person in question. Regulus Arcturus Black.
"Although Regulus deserved to die, he was still my brother, and I don't want you making fun of him!" Black said in a low voice, as he used a lock-picking spell to open the door.
Unlike the description in the original work, this room is exceptionally clean (probably because Kreacher often came to clean it). Its former splendor has been completely preserved, with green and silver decorations everywhere, and the Black family crest and the motto "Always Pure" meticulously depicted on the headboard.
The only slightly messy thing was the shelf in the corner, which was piled with clippings of various sizes, as well as photos and other items.
Bai Lin released a red-eyed sniffer, and the little creature immediately began sniffing around the room. Finally, under Kreacher's gaze, which could be described as "hating it to the bone," the red-eyed sniffer jumped onto the luxurious bed, rummaged around on the bed for a while, grabbed a glittering gold pendant, and jumped off the bed.
Bai Lin grabbed the Niffler, took the pendant from its paw, and handed it to Blake.
"Here it is!"
Black examined the pendant repeatedly, finally saying, "This is a Slytherin locket!" The pendant featured a snake shape emanating from a bright emerald, the very symbol of Slytherin.
"Believe me, your brother didn't deserve to die. Perhaps this loyal servant can tell us his story in detail, which I guess you've never cared about!" Bai Lin pointed at Kreacher.
Black lifted Kreacher's silencing spell, and just as Kreacher was about to unleash a torrent of abuse, Black raised his wand and said, "Tell me everything that happened before Regulus died! Now! Or I'll banish you from the Black family!"
Kreacher, however, was in agony. Regulus had ordered him not to tell any of his family members about these things, but the thought of being kicked out of the Black family filled him with despair and unbearable pain.
"Sirius has already run away from home. Strictly speaking, he and Regulus have separated. You should be able to tell him that!" Bai Lin muttered.
Finally, Kreacher revealed the story in fits and starts, and the plot was basically consistent with the original work. Regulus, who had originally followed Voldemort, discovered Voldemort's desire to rule the world, had come to his senses, and wanted to sabotage Voldemort's Horcrux plan.
Regulus led Kreacher to the locket Voldemort had hidden in the cave. However, the kind-hearted Regulus did not sacrifice his servant Kreacher. Instead, he drank the poison Voldemort used to protect the locket, allowing Kreacher to escape with it. Regulus instructed Kreacher not to tell any of his family members.
Kreacher had been tormented by Voldemort for months and was no longer quite lucid. As a house-elf, he knew many spells to aid his master, but had no idea how to destroy the Horcrux, so he hid it by his deceased master Regulus's bedside.
After hearing Kreacher's account, Blake was shocked and plopped down on the edge of Regulus's bed. A wave of sadness washed over him, and tears streamed down his face. He was overwhelmed with mixed emotions as his childhood and Regulus's life flashed before his eyes like a slideshow.
Finally, Black found a picture of Regulus on a shelf in the corner. It was a group photo of the Slytherin Quidditch team, with Regulus standing in the middle, smiling happily.
Blake silently smoothed out the photo and tucked it into his pocket. He had been wrongly accused for twelve years and suffered greatly in Azkaban, but his brother had also been wrongfully killed for fifteen years. Even he himself had not believed him and had hated him for fifteen years.
Now that the truth has come to light, Blake's heart is filled with longing and regret for Regulus.
"He's a hero! He should be remembered!" Bai Lin patted Black on the shoulder and said, "Take this to Dumbledore. He needs to know that Voldemort has many Horcruxes scattered around. Without destroying these Horcruxes, Voldemort will remain a constant threat!"
Blake nodded, patted Bai Lin on the shoulder, and the hostility in his eyes dissipated. He stammered, "Thank you!"
With house-elves around, getting to Hogwarts was much easier. The students were all on summer vacation, and the castle was deserted, but they still managed to find Dumbledore in the headmaster's office without any trouble.
Dumbledore was sitting by the window, lost in thought. He seemed to have aged considerably. When Bai Lin and Black came in, he hurriedly stuffed a small object into his pocket.
He seemed to have just woken up, or as if he hadn't slept for several days. Bai Lin immediately guessed the reason—Dumbledore thought Grindelwald had been killed by a meteorite and that his body had been completely destroyed.
Bai Lin didn't know how to tell Dumbledore the truth. This old man had fought against dark wizards his whole life and still had to face the threat of the resurrected Voldemort. Bai Lin didn't want him to shoulder the responsibility of fighting against the Great Old Ones again.
