The Walking Dead: Starting as a Cowboy
Chapter 85 Planning
Carol smiled slightly, looking at Moore with goodwill: "Thank you for the compliment."
"If it weren't for your stinky praise, I would have had a perfect day."
Carol mocked him mercilessly, then turned and walked away.
Moore paused for a moment before realizing what was happening. He glanced at Daryl, who smiled and walked away as well.
"Fuck!"
Moore cursed twice, then returned to his assigned area, where he had to silently lead his men to Carol's territory to cooperate with her.
With a large amount of work being distributed, the ranch, like a huge machine loaded with fuel, roared and started up.
Amy and her team collected information on the newcomers, confirming their families, personal information, previous jobs, abilities, and so on.
Caesar can simply have Amy filter people by the skills they need through a personal information form.
Amy handed Caesar several personal information forms, listing people with professions such as architectural design.
One of them was an old acquaintance, Jacques, the black man who had gone into Atlanta with Andrea and others to collect supplies.
Jacques looked at Caesar and said with a smile, "You may not remember, but I'm an inspector from the city planning department."
"I have indeed forgotten a bit."
Caesar waved his hand, looked at Jacques who was very different from before, and felt a strange sense of accomplishment.
Previously, Jacques always looked melancholy, constantly worried about whether he would die tomorrow, and was in a state of extreme internal conflict.
But now, Jacqueline is happy with life on the ranch, and it has taken her away from that precarious existence.
Even though Caesar had previously ordered everyone to fight the walkers, Jacques understood Caesar's good intentions and did not harbor any resentment towards him.
"Jackie, how's life been lately?"
Jacques sat in a chair, while Caesar sat behind a table, creating a scene reminiscent of an interview.
Caesar spoke casually as he flipped through Jacques's file.
Jacques shrugged. "Can't you tell from my state? My recent life has really given me meaning. I cherish my life now more than before the apocalypse."
"And I've also found a boyfriend."
"Oh?" Caesar raised an eyebrow, glanced up at Jacques, and said with a hint of sarcasm, "I didn't expect you to find a new love interest so quickly."
"Life is unpredictable," Jacques said with a lovestruck grin. "But in the apocalypse, love is even more precious. Once I've found it, I won't let go."
After a few words of casual conversation, Caesar stopped looking through the documents and turned to Jacqueline, asking for her advice.
"Jackie, since you used to be a planning inspector, could you give me some professional advice? I want to build a town here, and make it possible for it to expand continuously."
Jacques composed himself, becoming serious and focused. He lowered his head and pondered for a moment before taking out his notebook and speaking.
"Boss, as it stands, the layout of the entire ranch is very crude, consisting only of a living area, a livestock area, and a warehouse."
"Such partitioning is simply based on function and cannot be considered a proper plan, nor can it achieve some of the effects you want, such as faster defense against enemies or faster response to commands."
"I can give you an example."
To make it easier to understand, Jacques gestured earnestly as he spoke: "For example, a group of walkers attacked from one side of the ranch."
"The ranch's patrol teams are still understaffed, so they generally can't know in advance when the walkers arrive."
Caesar leaned back in his chair, crossed his arms, and looked very serious.
"The walkers have started attacking the residential areas. The combat squads don't live on the outskirts of the residential areas; only patrols can reach them quickly. Their numbers are limited, and they can't reach all the walkers."
"The walkers will break into homes in the outlying houses and tear the residents apart. Most of the reinforcements who come to help can't ride horses, and they can't drive in the narrow roads. Their arrival will take a lot of time."
Caesar lowered his head, a knowing glint in his eyes. The ranch was a formidable fighting force, and usually there was no chance of it being attacked, but there was no guarantee that it wouldn't be in the future.
It might be the Reapers' special forces, or... a CRM with helicopters.
"These shortcomings will lead to different losses under different building plans and with the same manpower."
"You mean you want me to move the combat personnel to the periphery?" Caesar asked.
Jacques shook his head. "That's not it. I was just giving an example to illustrate the shortcomings of the current building plan. What we need is to rebuild the entire residential area."
"Right now, most of the manpower is being devoted to the construction of residential areas, so I've also made some plans."
Seeing that Jacques was prepared, Caesar asked in confusion, "Why didn't you take it out sooner? Why did you wait until I asked you?"
"Because if the boss doesn't realize the situation needs to change, it's useless for me to remind him alone." Jacques winked and said jokingly, "So, I was originally going to talk to Amy. I believe that pillow talk is very effective."
Caesar showed no embarrassment and nodded: "If Amy were to tell me, there's a good chance I would realize that."
Jacqueline opened her notebook, which was filled with densely written notes, written in her own style that only she could understand.
"My three most basic design concepts for the living area are defensiveness, modularity, and expandability."
"The newly built town was not constructed haphazardly, but rather should have a clear hierarchy and direction of expansion, just like a plant that can grow."
Caesar nodded subconsciously; this aligned with his own thoughts.
"I suggest adopting a concentric, layered layout, which is more suitable for defense and phased expansion. And each expansion will not be too far from the very center of the town."
"From the inside out, it is divided into a core area, a residential area, and a production area."
"The core area is centered around your stone house, where you'll set up a council hall, a hospital, a core warehouse, and a well, among other things."
"The residential area includes the homes of various residents, markets, various workshops such as carpenters, blacksmiths, and leather craftsmen, as well as entrances to schools and ranches."
"The outermost layer is the production area. Houses for cattle and sheep should be built here, as well as houses for patrol teams. Some empty houses can also be placed here, not only to provide accommodation for newcomers, but also to lure the enemy to attack these uninhabited areas first."
"The core area is the most important. Most of the ranch's senior management activities are located here, including important buildings such as the hospital."
"The residential area is where residents live most often. Most people with a skill can use their abilities here and have a certain level of productivity."
"The outermost production area was used for grazing and growing grain, and it could also be used to fight off enemies."
"..."
Jacques went on and on, even mentioning the town's road construction, suggesting that four lanes would be better, and so on.
After hearing this, Caesar looked at Jacques with shining eyes.
Unexpectedly, Jacques is quite talented, with strong abilities in construction planning.
"Very good, your plan is brilliant. I have several other people here who can participate in the town's planning." Caesar stood up, handed several personal information forms to Jacques, and tapped the forms.
"We'll make you their team leader and have them help you complete this town planning as soon as possible."
"Okay, thank you, boss." Jacques was overjoyed. He hadn't expected Caesar to assign him such a task so quickly and even promote him.
