Huayu is here for you

Chapter 2 The Cunning Old Man

To be honest, Lin Yu also wanted to make a big film, but unfortunately... he didn't have enough money.

Lin Yu looked at the four-digit number displayed on the ATM in front of him and couldn't help but sigh.

"Sigh! I've been saving up these few thousand dollars since I can remember. I wish I could add another ten thousand later."

"Forget it, if I don't have any money myself but still want to make a movie, I'll have to find investors."

"But...given my situation, no one would vote for me!"

"I'm so envious of those time-traveling predecessors. They either had cheat codes or amazing memories. They could write novels with so many words on a whim, and make so many profitable investments without hesitation. How come all I can remember is Tencent and Moutai?"

"If all else fails, why not mortgage our house without telling our parents? After all, our most valuable possession is that small courtyard house."

"If I really mortgage the house, the old man will probably beat me to death." Lin Yu couldn't help but shrink back at the thought.

"Forget it, let's talk to the old man first and see if we can get an advance on the down payment for the house and the dowry that he saved for us. Then, if the old man takes advantage of us for three days and three nights, it should work."

Thinking of this, Lin Yu withdrew 500 yuan from the ATM and went straight to the supermarket to buy two packs of cigarettes for the old man, hoping that he would go easy on him when he slapped him.

Before entering the room, Lin Yu ate two sausages and drank a bottle of Coca-Cola. Then, burping, he barged into the old man's bedroom, displaying a kind of "tragic heroism" reminiscent of the line "The wind howls, the news is cold, the Yi River is cold, the hero departs, never to return!"

.........

The next morning, Lin Yu, carrying the bank card and PIN he had "scammed" from his father the day before, set off from home with a grin, his destination—the Beijing Film Academy's Directing Department…the professor's office!

With funding secured, the next step was naturally to solve the equipment problem. As a future director, renting equipment cheaply seemed reasonable, and perhaps he could even gather distributors and actors—his only "resource." It was with this mindset that Lin Yu headed to the Beijing Film Academy.

Meanwhile, at Lin Yu's home, his mother was glaring at Lin's father in front of her, her thumbs and forefingers practically itching to strike.

"Say it again, how much money did you give him?"

"Two...two hundred thousand!"

"Are you crazy? Two hundred thousand! You think it's twenty dollars?"

"Sigh...! I don't know what possessed me to give it to him!"

"What...what can I say to you! That brat's being silly, and you're going to join in? Making a movie? He hasn't even touched a camera, what kind of movie are you making?!"

"I... Xiaoyu showed me the script he wrote, and I think it's alright. After all, he's been smart since he was a child and has never done anything unreliable. I think... I think I should trust Xiaoyu this time."

"I...I'm truly fed up with the Lin family!" Lin's mother said, her face filled with exasperation.

At this moment, Lin Yu was already standing at the door of the director's office at the Beijing Film Academy, his heart pounding wildly.

To be honest, Lin Yu had absolutely no idea what to expect. But clinging to the wise saying that if you want to become famous, you have to do it early, he gritted his teeth and knocked on the office door.

"Enter!"

"Hello, teachers. My name is Lin Yu. I graduated from high school this year and just got into Beijing Film Academy." Lin Yu bowed at a 90-degree angle as soon as he entered the room.

Then, when he stood up and looked at the professors in the office, he was suddenly a little confused!

"Why isn't anyone I know here? Where's Tian Zhuangzhuang? Where's this famous director? I was hoping to try and build a relationship with this mentor, since he's easy to talk to. What are we going to do now?"

"You must be Lin Yu. I know you, you were the top student this year! My name is Su Mu, you can just call me Teacher Su."

Just as Lin Yu was at a loss, a middle-aged man stood up to help him out:

"What brings you here today?"

"Um... Hello, Professor Su. I'm here today to ask the mentors for help. I've written a script and want to film it, so I'd like to rent some of the academy's filming equipment." Lin Yun bowed to Su Mu and said.

"Oh? You've already written a script? Can I take a look?"

"Can."

After handing the script to Su Mu with both hands, Lin Yu stood there looking at his mentor with eyes full of gratitude for easing his embarrassment.

"Sigh! I was careless. I should have looked into the professors for the directing department at Beijing Film Academy this year, otherwise I wouldn't be in this awkward situation. Luckily, there are still many good people in this world!" Lin Yu thought to himself.

"Hehe... Kobayashi, may I call you that?"

"Yes, Ms. Su."

"Hmm, Xiaolin, your script is good. Although the story structure is a bit weak, it manages to connect with real life. Especially in the first half of the plot, a series of small details about daily life, while somewhat trivial, are quite effective in creating the narrative atmosphere. The flaws don't detract from the overall merit," Su Mu said with a smile.

Lin Yu thought to himself: This Teacher Su is really giving me face. What kind of plot does this "Nightclub" script have? It's just for fun, so I'll just read it without thinking.

"Hehe, thank you, Teacher Su. As for this equipment..." Lin Yu scratched his head and smiled.

"Haha...you're really in a hurry. Director Xie, Director Mei, you should take a look too." Su Mu gestured with his eyes to the man and woman opposite him.

The two teachers in front of Su Mu smiled and took the script after seeing Su Mu's signal. They understood what Su Mu meant: they wouldn't discourage the little guy.

After the two of them read it, they expressed similar opinions to Su Mu, which made Lin Yu blush a little. It wasn't that he didn't want to come up with a better script, but he simply didn't have any ideas. He hadn't really paid much attention to the high-quality films that were low-budget and could win awards in his previous life. With the 200,000 yuan he had, the only film he could barely make was "Nightclub," and even then, it depended on how much help the academy would give him.

Fortunately, the professors at the Beijing Film Academy were quite "understanding" and accepted a friendly price from him. In addition, after helping him resolve the issues of publicity and release, Lin Yu reluctantly allocated 50% of the investment to the academy.

Don't think Lin Yu is giving too much. At this point, the hurdle of distribution and release alone is enough to defeat 90% of directors, not to mention the added bonus of publicity.

As Lin Yu happily stepped out of the gates of the Beijing Film Academy, the professors in the directing department were once again engaged in a "heated" conversation.

"Hehe... This is the first time I've ever seen such a headstrong young man! He's just holding a script and 200,000 yuan and he's already clamoring to make a movie."

"Interesting, I think he can do it."

"Old Su, you really think highly of him?"

"It's alright, this kid has set a precedent for our Beijing Film Academy after all."

"The first time a hothead had set a precedent?"

"Haha... He's pretty naive, but I see a drive and ambition in him that other directors don't have. That's what Chinese directors lack. I hope he succeeds. He's a good prospect. Even if he fails, it's okay. At least he's already a big step ahead of his peers. Anyway, I'll stop here. I still need to go to the China Film Studio to use my connections. Oh, right, isn't Director Tian coming to our school next year? I need to bring him along. He has much more influence than I do."

"Heh...you cunning old man!"
