Doomsday Mechanic: My Train Can Be Modified Infinitely
Chapter 85 Arrival in Berlin
Wang Zhengyang remained silent for a few seconds. The situation was more complicated than he had anticipated. The Iron Hand Gang, Mr. Zhou, Andrei's team... and now there was him too.
"What about that address?" he asked. "27 Oraning Street, anything found?"
Li Ming pulled up a map: "An old neighborhood in the Kreuzberg district. There are many shops and restaurants run by immigrants there, a mixed bag, indeed a good hiding place. But this information didn't come from Andrei—it was found on the phone of Rajish's group of Indians. They were searching for this address before they died; it might have been a clue from the Iron Hand Gang, or it might have been something they found themselves."
"So Andrei may be there, or he may not," Wang Zhengyang said.
"Yes." Li Ming nodded. "Moreover, this neighborhood happens to be within the Iron Hand Gang's territory. If Andrei is really hiding there, it's like hiding in a wolf's den. If he's not, it might be a trap."
Wang Zhengyang pondered. Going to that address at night was very risky. But if he didn't go, Natasha wouldn't feel at ease, and he did indeed need Andrei's team to join him.
"We'll go tonight," he finally decided, "but we need to be better prepared."
"What do you need me to do?" Li Ming asked.
"Prepare two sets of night vision equipment, as well as silenced weapons," Wang Zhengyang said. "In addition, continue to monitor communications between the Iron Hand Gang and Mr. Zhou. If the cleanup team makes any unusual moves, we need to know immediately."
"Understood." Li Ming nodded. "There's one more thing... Chen Yishang said he can install four mortars this afternoon and asked if you want to test them."
"Not for now," Wang Zhengyang said. "Firing now would be too conspicuous. Let's wait until tonight."
He turned to leave, but Li Ming called him back: "Brother Wang, that girl... Natasha, what are you planning to do with her?"
Wang Zhengyang stopped in his tracks: "What do you mean?"
"She's now one of the Iron Hand Gang's main targets," Li Ming said. "Mr. Zhou's men are probably looking for her too. Leaving her here could cause us trouble."
"I know," Wang Zhengyang said, "but she has nowhere to go right now. And..." He paused, "her father might have some things we need."
"You mean those pieces of evidence?"
"It's not just about evidence." Wang Zhengyang recalled some fragments of memories from his past life. "The fact that Andrei's team has survived the Iron Hand Gang's pursuit for so long means they must have their own survival strategies. Those experiences are very useful to us."
Li Ming nodded and said no more.
Wang Zhengyang stepped out of the carriage and saw Natasha still sitting in the corner, staring blankly at her injured leg. Lin Luoer was tidying up her tools not far away, but her gaze kept drifting over in their direction.
He walked up to Natasha: "How's your wound?"
"Miss Lin handled it very well." Natasha looked up. "She said that as long as she's careful not to get infected, she'll recover quickly."
"That's good," Wang Zhengyang said. "We'll go check out that address tonight. But before that, you need to rest and conserve your energy."
"I can help," Natasha said immediately. "I've learned bandaging and I know some basic mechanical repairs..."
"What you need right now is rest," Wang Zhengyang said firmly. "The Iron Hand Gang won't let this go easily; there might be a fight tonight. If you're exhausted, you'll become a burden."
The words were direct, even somewhat cold, but Natasha sensed the concern in them. She nodded. "I understand."
Wang Zhengyang turned and left, walking towards the roof of the vehicle. Chen Yishang was still there installing mortars; two were already installed. The mortars were fixed to their bases, the barrels pointing skyward, looking imposing and menacing.
"How's the progress?" Wang Zhengyang asked.
"Faster than expected." Chen Yishang wiped his sweat. "These two are already calibrated, and their accuracy meets military standards. The remaining two should be finished this afternoon."
"Very good." Wang Zhengyang stroked the cold cannon barrel, a sense of reassurance welling up inside him. With this heavy firepower, the train truly had the ability to protect itself.
But not enough.
The Iron Hand Gang, Mr. Zhou, and the impending apocalypse... He needs more preparation, more strength, and more trustworthy partners.
Could Andrei's team consist of those partners?
He didn't know. But he knew he had to find the answer tonight.
He looked up at the sky. The sky over Berlin was still overcast, but clouds were gathering, indicating that rain was possible in the evening.
A storm is coming.
He and his train were in the eye of the storm.
3 PM, Berlin Tegel Airport highway exit.
A black Mercedes-Benz V-Class minivan slowly drove out of the tollbooth. The car was ordinary, a common minivan on the streets of Berlin, with dark-tinted windows and no markings.
But the people inside the car were no ordinary people.
In the driver's seat was an Asian man, around thirty years old, with short hair and sharp eyes. He wore an ordinary gray jacket, but the web of his right hand gripping the steering wheel had thick calluses—marks left from long-term use of firearms.
In the passenger seat sat a white woman with blonde hair tied in a simple ponytail, wearing black-rimmed glasses, who looked like an ordinary businesswoman. But in her hand, she held a military-grade tablet computer, the screen displaying a real-time map of Berlin and several flashing lights.
There were two people in the back seat. On the left was a burly Black man, resting with his eyes closed, but his posture was upright and his breathing even, clearly indicating he was a highly trained individual. On the right was a thin white man, examining a silver briefcase containing disassembled sniper rifle parts.
"Berlin, cloudy, 12 degrees Celsius, 65% humidity," the man in the driver's seat said calmly. "Rain is expected this evening."
"Roger that." The woman in the passenger seat recorded on her tablet. "'Shadow,' where are we going now?"
The man known as "Shadow"—the leader of the cleaning team—glanced in the rearview mirror: "Let's go to the safe house first. The address has been sent to your device."
The blonde woman operated a tablet and brought up an address: "Mitterrand, 14 Auguste Straße, four-story apartment building, top-floor duplex. The landlord is currently on a business trip in Munich. The lease is for three months, cash payment, no record."
"Is it clean?" the black man in the back seat asked, opening his eyes.
"It's clean," the blonde woman said. "I checked, the landlord is just an ordinary architect with no connections. The house was rented last week, and it changed hands through three different agencies, so we can't be traced back to them."
Shadow nodded: "Very good. After we arrive at the safe house, 'Spider' will be in charge of setting up the surveillance network, 'Anvil' will check the equipment, and 'Eagle Eye' will survey the surrounding terrain. We'll have a meeting at 8 p.m. tonight to formulate an action plan."
"Understood," the three responded simultaneously.
