Chapter 13 Wolf Tracks in the Snowy Night

Jiang Fu'an looked closely and saw that it was a three-headed wolf.

The wolf fur was covered in snow, almost blending into the snow slope, with only the six green spots revealing their presence.

Upon seeing this, Jiang Fu'an merely raised his eyelids slightly, calmly turned around, and continued on his way without any haste.

As a seasoned hunter, he had dealt with wolves far too many times.

He knew that wolves were cunning and suspicious by nature, and would never pounce on their prey immediately after spotting it.

They need to observe and assess whether their prey is in danger.

During this period, a person's reaction often determines whether the wolf will launch an attack next.

If you panic, your eyes will dart away, your steps will falter, and you might even turn and run away...

The emerald green light would immediately turn into a lunging black shadow.

Wolves are very clever; they can read "fear".

Of course, you can't just go head-to-head with them.

Staring straight back, or subconsciously bending down to pick up a stone or touch something, is all seen as provocation by a wolf.

These creatures are extremely ferocious. Far from being afraid, they will instead be provoked into aggression and launch a probing attack.

Ultimately, however, humans are not on the wolf's regular diet.

To wolves, a person who stands on two legs and can wield a weapon is also a strange and dangerous beast that they need to be wary of.

As long as you stay calm and keep walking, in most cases, the wolf pack will weigh the pros and cons and retreat on its own.

Jiang Fu'an was able to remain so calm at this moment not only because of his experience, but also because he was confident in his abilities.

He was wrapped in thick cotton clothes, and his arms and calves were wrapped with several layers of tanned hard leather. It wouldn't be so easy for the wolf's fangs to bite through him in one go.

The large basket on its shoulder was also very useful; it could protect the back of the thighs below and cover the back of the neck above, completely shielding the vital parts of the back from wolf attacks from behind.

Moreover, he kept his right hand tightly gripping the knife.

This is a long sword that cost ten taels of silver to buy in the county town. The blade is heavy and the edge is sharp.

If you get hit, no matter which part of the wolf is struck, it will suffer.

He maintained a steady pace, but his peripheral vision would occasionally dart backward like a hook.

The three wolves followed, keeping a distance of about twenty paces, hovering at a comfortable distance.

They neither gave up nor pressed on.

Jiang Fu'an felt a slight sense of relief.

This is a good sign.

On the edge of this icy, snowy, and dangerously treacherous mountain range, he would never want to take action if he could avoid it.

Time passed slowly, and all that could be heard on the snow was the crunching sound of his own footsteps.

The journey was exceptionally long, and we had to be on our guard every step of the way.

Finally, the view opened up before me.

The dense forest was left behind, replaced by vast stretches of farmland covered in snow.

But just then, the snow on the left side of the field suddenly burst open!

A gray shadow lunged at his throat without warning!

Almost simultaneously, the three wolves that had been hanging behind them suddenly exerted their strength, kicking up a cloud of snow foam, and charged forward at a crazy speed!

"Zheng—!"

A clear, metallic hum broke the silence of the snowy field.

Jiang Fu'an's right hand, which had been lightly pressed on the hilt of the knife, moved.

The long sword was drawn, drawing a bright arc in the air, striking the wolf that pounced from the left side squarely in the waist and abdomen.

The wolf howled and fell heavily onto the snow, splashing up a spray of red and white.

What a cunning thing!

Jiang Fu'an cursed inwardly; he was not entirely unprepared for this sneak attack.

The wolves coordinated much faster than expected.

The second wolf, taking advantage of his momentary lapse in sword strike, darted forward like a black lightning bolt and bit down hard on his right arm where he was holding the sword!

The fangs pierced through the outer cotton cloth and pounded hard against the hard leather inside, making a grinding sound that made your teeth ache.

The other two wolves had already split up to the left and right, bypassing the large basket in his way, and were about to pounce on him!

With the baskets on their backs blocking their view, they couldn't gnaw on them right away, so they immediately changed their targets.

His right arm was caught by the wolf, which restricted his sword strike.

We will be attacked head-on again!

Jiang Fu'an's pupils contracted slightly; the situation instantly became critical.

But he showed no sign of panic.

His left hand swiftly reached and swung towards his waist like a ghost!

"bass!"

A flash of cold light shot out; it was a short dagger held close to the body, which precisely pierced the side of the wolf's neck hanging on the right arm!

The wolf's body stiffened abruptly, and its bite suddenly loosened.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Jiang Fu'an swung his arm forcefully and shook off the limp wolf carcass.

Looking down, I saw several deep dents on my arm from being bitten, which were throbbing slightly, but thankfully there was no bleeding.

Just then, the two wolves in front pounced!

A foul stench filled the air, and fangs gleamed white.

Jiang Fu'an didn't have time to sheathe his dagger; he used his right hand to sweep the long sword upwards with all his might!

The blade flashed like a bolt of lightning, accompanied by the sound of wind being cut, and slashed fiercely into the chest and abdomen of the wolf that had charged forward first.

"Awooo—!"

A sharp, piercing scream rang out briefly, then abruptly ceased.

The wolf rolled away, leaving a long trail of blood on the snow, and then lay still.

The last wolf witnessed its two companions die one after the other in their last breath.

Its momentum abruptly halted, a muffled whimper escaped its throat, and without hesitation, it twisted its body, tucked its tail between its legs, and galloped wildly back towards the forest it had come from, disappearing into the snow in the blink of an eye.

Seeing that the last gray figure had completely fled into the distance, Jiang Fu'an then plunged his long sword into the snow.

He felt as if his bones had been removed, and he plopped down in the thick snow, panting heavily.

Those few exchanges of combat, though seemingly swift and decisive, were in fact bursts of full power in every moment, resulting in a tremendous drain on mental and physical energy.

Adding to the nearly half-hour of mentally intense trekking and confrontation he had just endured, he felt soreness and weakness throughout his body.

But he didn't dare rest for long.

After catching his breath, he drew his dagger and walked toward the three wolves on the ground.

They're probably not quite dead yet; we need to finish them off quickly.

Besides, the body shouldn't be wasted; it should be taken back.

After bleeding, it will be much lighter to carry.

With swift strokes, the blade fell, and the victims were eliminated one by one.

Warm wolf blood seeped into the snow, spreading a dark red hue.

As Jiang Fu'an worked, he secretly sighed with relief:

Fortunately, there were only four wolves. If they had encountered a pack of ten or more, today would have been dangerous.

It seems that strength alone is not enough.

Jiang Fu'an decided to go back and study the kung fu recorded on the animal skin.

With his five spiritual roots and the inability to access spiritual veins, his path to immortality is destined to be long.

Before that, learning a solid self-defense skill is more practical than anything else.

After draining the blood from the three wolves, he made several clean snowballs, roughly wiped the bloodstains off the wolf carcasses' fur, and then stuffed them one by one into the large basket on his back.

He stood up, repacked his backpack, and strode off towards Xujia Village.

There were no further setbacks on the road after that.

As he approached the threshing ground behind his house, a low, sharp question suddenly came from the direction of the house foundation under construction nearby:

"Who?!"

Jiang Fu'an turned his head to look.

A figure bundled up in thick clothes, holding a wooden stick, peeked out from behind the low wall of the construction site. Judging from the outline, it looked like Boss Xu.

He was a little surprised.

It was freezing cold, and dawn was just around the corner, yet Boss Xu was still here on patrol.

They weren't afraid of getting sick from the cold.

Having been seen, he had no choice but to lower his voice and reply:

"It's me! Jiang Fu'an!"

Upon hearing this, the figure on the other end was clearly taken aback for a moment, then quickly jogged over.

As I got closer, it was indeed Boss Xu, his stubble covered in a layer of white frost.

He examined Jiang Fu'an by the dim light and exclaimed in surprise:

"Boss? Where have you come from?"

Jiang Fu'an gestured with his chin towards the basket on his back:

"We hunted a few wolves. Remember to invite the second brother over for lunch at noon."

"I'll have your sister-in-law make a whole hot pot of wolf meat to warm her up."

Upon hearing this, Old Xu craned his neck to look at the basket on his back again.

Inside, it was dark and piled up, making it impossible to see the whole thing, but it was definitely the remains of animals, and the strong smell of blood was unmistakable.

He then completely believed it, and his face immediately showed a look of admiration mixed with lingering fear.

However, before he could finish expressing his doubts, Jiang Fu'an waved his hand and walked straight towards his own courtyard.

Old Xu opened his mouth, but swallowed the rest of his words.

He tightened his collar, turned around, and walked back towards the construction site.
