Gods, Ashes Descend

Chapter 40: Getting to Work

After watching for a while, the novelty wore off, so Li Wei took out his phone and started looking up information.

However, they were all the same: either it was about how a zombie killed someone, or someone was calling for help.

So Li Wei got bored while browsing and went to watch videos of Odbiao or Xiu Ti, but he didn't watch for long before the internet was cut off just before dawn.

And soon after, Lao Wang, who had led people to store water, came to inform them that the water and electricity had been cut off.

The school's food reserves are also limited; even if they eat sparingly, it will only last for a week, and that's without considering Li Wei and his group.

However, Li Wei was not surprised at all. He thought it was a movie, with everything in chaos, yet the water and electricity were still on.

Water and electricity are very delicate things. If someone drives and knocks down a utility pole, they're doomed. And water won't flow in the pipes without electricity.

A power outage would cause the stored grain to rot very quickly, and the reason it could last for a week was because a generator supplied power to the kitchen's air-conditioned storage room; otherwise, the meat would have gone bad in three days.

Therefore, in modern society without electricity, famine is already a foregone conclusion, not to mention that people living in poverty with limited land and insufficient food production will only suffer more.

But Li Wei was helpless; the sacrificial site didn't produce any grain.

Li Wei didn't announce the disbandment until the sun came up, but he figured they were too exhausted to sleep, so he gave them a glimmer of hope.

They were told to write down their home addresses, check the situation at night, and then go to "rescue" them the next day. After that, they were told to find their own accommodation. Since there were fewer people, everyone could get a private room. It was also a test to see if the zombies would turn into zombies during the day.

The government outside wouldn't crumble at the slightest touch. I need to see if it's still a red moon tonight. If it is, then I can start taking decisive action and clear out the surrounding counties first.

If not, contact the local government and go back to your original profession: hiring mercenaries.

After all, even a corpse variant can't remain motionless without the Red Moon.

"Boss, we found dozens of people in the nearby forest, and there were also people coming from the gate. The mutated corpses also occasionally wander over."

The school has walls, so there's no need to worry too much about the wandering zombie variants. Just assign a few dozen people to clean them up. However, Li Wei needs to meet those people and explain the rules. If there are any sanctimonious hypocrites or anyone who doesn't know their place, just kill them.

Most of the people who came were adults brought by students who had gone out to study, which made the already scarce resources even worse. However, most of them also brought a day or two's worth of food, so it wasn't too bad.

As for the issue of the Christian Christians, it's not a problem at all. In Krishnamurti's worldview, the more you know, the easier it is to attract His attention. Let them believe, and the deeper their belief, the faster they will die.

After arranging things for the newcomers, Li Wei went to touch the Spiral Sword and go back to call for more people, since this number of people was simply not enough.

However, a problem arose: there weren't many undead in the cemetery of the sacrificial site. When Li Wei had gathered eight hundred people, he heard the Fire Keeper say...

"Lord Ash, the graveyard is almost empty. If you need more manpower, please head to the royal city."

Moreover, there was more than one problem, because the Firelink Shrine was originally designed for Ashbringer alone. It was already a huge sacrifice to arm the first 300 people, and less than half of the remaining 500 people could even be clothed.

Li Wei had no choice but to accept it, even if he had to grit his teeth and bear it.

So, don't be surprised if you see a muscular European man or woman at school wearing completely ill-fitting student clothes; it's not lingerie.

Sleeping during the day is fine, but many people have nightmares.

As night fell, the red light still shone on the earth, and Li Wei happily announced to the survivors, "Your world is truly beyond saving. From now on, don't consider yourselves human."

However, during the nighttime walk, someone suddenly collapsed and began to convulse. Before anyone could help him up, his neck snapped to the side and straightened, followed by a zombie-like transformation and screams from the crowd.

After the guard dealt with the unfortunate fellow, the crowd panicked. No one was sure if they would be next. Soon after, Goto, a student who knew Li Wei well, came over as a representative of the students.

"Uncle, what should we do? Everyone is panicking. Didn't you say last night that we shouldn't be exposed to red light? Why did you still tell us to do things at night?"

Li Wei scratched his head, feeling numb, and replied.

"Then what should I tell you to do? Go back to sleep, or let you do whatever you want? I don't mind."

But if you turn into zombies, don't blame me.

"No, what I mean is, why not find a place where the red light doesn't reach, like a big place like a swimming pool, and just cover the red light with a cloth?"

Li Wei thought about it and decided to give it a try, but then objected.

"No, have you forgotten that there's no electricity right now? It'll be even more troublesome if something goes wrong in the dark there. Besides, we can't pollute the water. But the kitchen area is okay. Everyone, go to the cafeteria area. But you're still not allowed to sleep."

Thinking about the problems that would arise in the future, Li Wei shook his head.

"However, you only spend three or four hours a day outdoors. It's difficult for you to even farm and support yourselves, let alone help us with our work. In fact, you could say that you all basically have to rely on me to support you. I'm a mercenary, and I don't do business at a loss."

Based on this calculation, things will only get worse as the number of people increases, to the point of being extremely dire.

Goto looked at Li Wei, wondering how long the red moon could last, and gritted his teeth.

"Uncle, I can help you with your personal life. I can introduce you to anyone you fancy, including other people."

Li Wei looked the legal loli in front of him up and down with a shocked expression. Was this considered a traditional skill? He slapped her on the forehead.

"Don't be so dirty-minded. Didn't I say no lewdness? Never mind, we can talk about this later. Let's all go to the cafeteria first, and bring some blankets to cover all the windows."

As for other killers, they have no interest in stabbing girls; on the contrary, they are very interested in killing someone with a single sword.

The next day, Li Wei arranged for a hundred people to guard the house, and then led the others to the town to start working. Along the way, there was blood everywhere, and mutated corpses were active everywhere.

The necromancy variant is not a zombie, it does not eat people, and when a red light shines on it at night, it will get up and wander around.

A bunch of killers were excitedly hacking away, limbs flying everywhere, but they had already used up half their manpower and still hadn't made it into the city. Ammunition was being consumed at an alarming rate, and the number of zombies was increasing with each kill.

Even if this remote urban area has a small population, a normal city or town still has at least tens of thousands of people, most of whom are elderly and have difficulty moving around. Excluding those who have run away or gone into hiding, it is normal for tens of thousands of zombie variants to be wandering around.

The only option is a bloody, protracted battle to clear out the city's outskirts.

The fierce fighting on Li Wei's side naturally attracted the attention of the survivors, who thought the army had attacked and came to ask for help.

However, when they saw Li Wei and his group of performance artists, many of them turned and ran away, because Li Wei and his group looked like a bunch of mentally unstable lunatics.

However, they also managed to rescue some people.
