Chapter 65 Ghostly Fate, A Do-or-Die Battle
Purple smoke still lingered in the air.
Lu Dan grabbed Da Lu's intact arm and pulled him up from the ground, then used his other hand to tug at the still-dazed Zhang Min: "Run!"
No explanation is needed; the resentment behind him, which seems to freeze the air, is the perfect starting pistol.
Da Lu was in excruciating pain, his face contorted in agony. Blood from his severed arm gushed out as he ran, staining the ground.
"It's a slaughterhouse down there," the fat man panted as he incoherently relayed the information to Lu Dan. "They're all 'salted fish' hanging from the ceiling, two-headed ones. There's also a madman, also two-headed, who tears people apart indiscriminately."
As he spoke, he laboriously pulled a black notebook from his pocket with his blood-stained right hand and tossed it directly to Lu Dan: "Here. This is a diary; it's very important for our 'census'!"
Lu Dan received the notebook and stuffed it into his pocket.
The three of them were running wildly along the mountain road toward the village.
"We can't go back to the village!" Da Lu noticed the direction and suddenly stopped, his eyes filled with even greater fear than before. "The village chief seems a bit unwilling too, and can't accept our 'census'."
"If we go back, we're even more doomed!"
Lu Dan made a quick decision, changed direction, and pointed directly at the rocky mountaintop: "Then let's run to the top of the mountain as soon as possible."
As soon as the three of them turned a corner, a mournful cry of despair came from the dilapidated temple halfway up the mountain behind them.
"Boom!"
The mountain trembled and then erupted with a huge explosion.
Amidst the swirling mud and dust, a square-faced figure in a tattered leather jacket darted out.
Lu Dan glanced back, his pupils dilating slightly.
He recognized that face all too well; it was Ye Jianguo from the very beginning.
However, Ye Jianguo was emanating a corpse aura, and a small head resembling a tumor was wriggling on his left shoulder, emitting a shriek at them.
"Is this also Ye Jianguo?"
The puzzle in Lu Dan's mind was disrupted once again.
Is this a time paradox or a poorly executed clone? Who is this script trying to kill? Is it all just guesswork?
Without time to think, the two-headed monster charged at them at incredible speed, landing on all fours.
"Quick! Run! Run!" Da Lu was so scared that his soul almost left his body, and his originally severely injured body suddenly burst forth with amazing potential.
The mountain path was rugged, and the three of them breathed alternately.
Ye Jianguo chased closer and closer, and the distance quickly shrank to within five meters.
"Hehehe!"
A strange laugh rang out right next to my eardrums.
The little head on Ye Jianguo's shoulder suddenly stretched out, its neck like a fleshy bullet launched from the ground, and it opened its mouth full of fine, sharp teeth to attack Zhang Min, who was running at the back.
Zhang Min was busy running and didn't notice anything, so she naturally couldn't dodge.
"What a hassle."
Lu Dan loosened his grip on Da Lu's hand, and using the momentum, he suddenly spun around, reaching into his robes with his right hand to pull out a slingshot, drawing it fully and tightening the rubber band.
"Boom!"
He aimed quickly, and the psionic bullet, the size of a peanut, streaked through the air with a blue light before piercing straight into the open mouth of the little head.
"Bang!"
A dull thud resounded inside the little head's mouth, shattering the entire mouth and splattering black blood all over the ground.
"Aww—"
The two-headed monster cried out in pain, the immense force causing it to flip backward and roll several times on the ground before coming to a stop.
"Run! This thing can only block for a moment."
Lu Dan put away his slingshot; he had only two bullets left.
The three continued their desperate run, their adrenaline gradually waning, and their fatigue growing stronger.
Three or four minutes felt like an eternity to them.
Ye Jianguo got up again. Although he was injured, this only fueled his ferocity. He roared and approached them once more.
Just then, the bushes beside them swayed without wind, and a black shadow, like lightning, darted out without warning.
It was that "wild dog" that had been driven away twice by Lu Dan.
The hunter, who had been lurking in the shadows, finally got the perfect opportunity to reap the rewards.
No one could react in time; it was too fast.
Lu Dan only felt a blur before his eyes, followed by a crisp sound—crack.
Big Lu, who had been running alongside, suddenly froze, his massive head rolling off his neck and tumbling into the grass.
The obese body lurched forward a few steps due to inertia before crashing heavily to the ground, blood spurting more than two meters high.
The "wild dog," resembling a withered child, lay on Da Lu's corpse, frantically tearing at Da Lu's remains, making greedy chewing sounds from its throat.
Zhang Min let out a short scream, then quickly covered her mouth.
Lu Dan's heart sank to the bottom.
This teamwork is too perfect, one launching a frontal assault while the other launches a flanking attack.
There was no time for mourning; the two continued running forward.
Suddenly, thick purple smoke billowed from the corpse of Da Lu lying on the ground, passing over the wild dogs that were gnawing at it, and drifted directly to a spot more than ten meters in front of Lu Dan and Zhang Min.
Purple smoke condensed and swirled, and in less than two seconds, a perfectly intact Lu, whose severed arms had even grown back, tumbled out of the smoke.
His face was ashen, clearly indicating that this resurrection had taken a heavy toll.
"What are you looking at? Run!"
The newborn fat boy let out a piercing howl and took off rushing up the mountain, more than twice as fast as before.
Lu Dan's eye twitched. How come he couldn't find this prop? The effect was so good; this person looked like he was dead beyond any doubt, yet he could be fully revived?
"Walk!"
The two quickly adjusted their posture and kept up with the fat man's pace.
The two-headed monster behind them joined the "wild dog" that had finished its appetizer. The two, one tall and one short, were engaged in a hellish chase on a sunny afternoon.
This tug-of-war lasted for another ten minutes or so. The three of them had been exhausted to the limit, and every step they took now was a drain on their life force.
After passing through a relatively narrow rock wall, an open space finally appeared ahead, leading to the mountaintop.
However, when Lu Dan and his companions reached the last slope, they had to stop—there was no way forward.
Before them was a nearly vertical, smooth cliff that stretched upwards for dozens of meters, with absolutely no footholds to climb. On either side were bottomless abysses; it was a dead end.
There's no road.
Da Lu slumped to the ground, staring at the precipice before him, the last glimmer of light in his eyes extinguished.
Zhang Min could no longer hold on; her legs gave way, and she knelt on the ground, her face instantly streaked with tears and snot.
Desperate cries echoed across the empty mountaintop: "We're going to die...we're going to die!"
Behind them, the sound of chasing footsteps stopped at the bottom of the slope.
The two-headed monster and the "wild dogs" did not rush forward. They were watching their prey's last struggle and slowly, step by step, approached them.
Lu Dan took a deep breath; his lungs, after the strenuous exercise, felt like they were being scraped by countless knives.
He turned around, leaning against the cold stone wall, and reached for the slingshot in his pocket with his right hand again.
Only two bullets left, two monsters, and three people.
"Why are you crying? We're not at our wits' end yet!"
Lu Dan's voice was unusually calm, yet it revealed a madness that seemed to come from his very bones.
He pulled the rubber band and aimed at the grinning two-headed monster.
"Sister Zhang Min, Brother Lu, when faced with unreasonable villagers, as officials, you should at least knock out a couple of their teeth before you can continue the 'census'."
