Mystery: But the Witch's Path

Chapter 6 The Clayton Family

After returning home and making some simple arrangements, it was already close to noon. Hahn could only make arrangements for lunch, while Lucius went back to his room and locked the door.

Lucius, however, couldn't understand what George III's purpose was.

By making me choose to become a "witch" but then directly bestowing upon me the title of "countess," it is clearly intended to let the world know that "I am a woman."

But what value does such a 'countess' have in infiltrating the 'Witch's Church'?

But that wouldn't make much sense, would it? If they got everything promised by George III, they could train countless assassins and let them slowly succumb to their own desires, wouldn't that be better? Even if the witch cult is stupid, they should know that I, a "witch," am a "spy" and can't possibly be one of their own.

............

"Young Master Lucius, lunch is ready."

Hahn's voice also interrupted Lucius's thoughts. If he couldn't figure it out, he might as well not think about it. He only needed to know 'George III's' ultimate goal; if things went wrong, he could always report him later.

.........

Because of the "special circumstances" of this period, today's lunch was not as lavish as I remember. It consisted of only simple steak, salad, cream of corn soup, and some desserts such as ice cream.

Seeing that Lucius had finished eating, Hahn arranged for someone to clear the table in preparation for leaving.

"Hahn, come with me for a moment." After finishing his lunch, Lucius saw Hahn and immediately thought of Uncle Rafe's suggestion that morning.

Hahn Clayton was a little surprised to hear this, because normally Lucius would be taking his lunch break by now, and he would usually order people not to bother him.

Despite their surprise, they followed closely behind.

Based on his previous memories, Lucius found his study on the second floor, opened the door and went inside, while Hahn followed closely behind and closed the door.

Lucius, who had just found a seat, said to Hahn, "Just find somewhere to sit."

Seeing that Hahn had settled down, Lucius began to explain the reason for his summons:

"Hahn, you're also an 'Extraordinary', right? I wonder which path you took to become one?"

Hahn was not surprised at all that Lucius would ask such a question, and calmly replied:

"It's the 'lawyer' young master. In order to better serve the 'Sheffield family,' every 'Clayton' will choose a 'lawyer.'"

"I am currently a Serial 9 'Lawyer' in the Lawyer pathway."

Upon hearing Hahn's reply, he immediately asked, "What about Rex? Did he choose to become an Extraordinary?"

Rex Clayton, the 17-year-old son of Hahn, is currently studying at Eton College with the financial support of the Sheffield family. If all goes well, he will become Lucius's butler in about three years.

Hearing that the question was directed at her son, she calmly replied, "Rex has begun to explore extraordinary knowledge, but he hasn't yet taken the potion to become an extraordinary being. Under normal circumstances, he will take the potion at the end of this year, study law at university, and begin preparing to take over my job after graduation."

Hearing Hahn's words, Lucius felt relieved. After all, his condition was no longer suitable for military service, and he couldn't possibly give away his family's possessions. He had accepted his uncle's suggestion to train a "white glove" to replace him. But where could he find a suitable candidate? So he directly asked:

"Hahn, you are aware of the current situation of the Sheffield family. I am very unlikely to join the army, but we cannot give away what belongs to the Sheffield family. Therefore, we need to train a suitable person to join the army in my place. Your family has been working for 'Sheffield' for a long time, and everyone has been dedicated to their work. So I am very willing to recommend Rex. You can consider asking Rex if he is willing to go."

Hahn was shocked to hear Lucius's words. Lucius had just transmigrated and hadn't participated in many gatherings, so he didn't know the value of these words.

But as someone who had always served the Sheffield family, he understood the value of those words.

Although their military positions will definitely be revoked in the future, the things they gained during this period cannot be taken back. The most obvious example is that the Clayton family will also have military ties afterward.

If we were to describe Hahn's current feelings, the most direct and vivid analogy would be what Emperor Rosell said: "It's like a pie has fallen from the sky, but to say it's a pie has fallen from the sky is an understatement; it's more like he's lost his title."

Every "Clayton" didn't become a butler because they were poor, but because of the name "Sheffield".

The Clayton family's net worth, accumulated over hundreds of years, is now comparable to that of a viscount, though of course, this money wasn't "stolen" from the Sheffield family.

Instead, they obtained their information through services provided to "Sheffield" and then invested it themselves. For example:

For example, during wartime: where the Kingdom of Rune wages war, when it begins, when it ends, and what items experience a surge in value during this period.

In peacetime: You can also get excellent information on industrial investments, or even participate in the Sheffield family's investments. After all, you only eat a little bit of scraps and don't take much. Even if the master family knows, they won't blame you. They might even praise you for being smart and having a good mind.

If you can't make money from this kind of information coming from the highest levels of government, then you're not as smart as a "curly-haired baboon."

Moreover, there is no need to bear the risks of joining the army. Basically, the inheritance is perfectly passed down from generation to generation. Before adulthood, they are basically sponsored and raised by Sheffield. After adulthood, they have stable jobs with food and lodging provided. They then raise the next generation to take over their lives. After the handover is completed, they can return to the Sheffield family fiefdom to manage their own family and the master family's land property and live a peaceful retirement.

The Clayton family is also very well-mannered. Basically, every generation understands that they owe their current status to the Sheffield family, so they generally don't cause trouble for their master's family. They are more protective of the Sheffield family's interests than any other Sheffield family.

After realizing what was happening, Hahn said with a serious expression, "Young Master Lucius, rest assured, Rex will definitely follow your wishes and join the army."

Looking at Hahn Clayton's serious expression, Lucius was somewhat puzzled and could only say:

"We still need to consider Rex Clayton's opinion, but I won't force him if he disagrees."

"I believe Rex Clayton will agree, young master Lucius." This was the only thing Hahn could say outwardly regarding Lucius's words, but what he truly thought was:

"If your own son disagrees, you can beat him until he agrees. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

If he doesn't agree, the opportunity will belong to someone else; old Clayton has more than one son.

If I knew this news, I would definitely go back to Backlund to beg Master Lucius to give my family another chance. In that case, it should be my younger brother or someone else. Although we are all Clayton, I also have my own selfish motives.

The reason is that Clayton also wants to replicate Sheffield's success. If he becomes a nobleman first, he will lose his butler job and his protection, and will be slowly devoured by other nobles.

Joining the army usually means becoming a common soldier, and relying on connections and favors from one's family won't lead to much success; it's a case of being neither good enough for high-level positions nor good enough for low-level ones, and it's also a waste of money. Based on the principle of "better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond," I basically gave up on joining the army.

However, their desire to become nobles never changed.

"You can discuss this yourselves and give me an answer as soon as possible," Lucius said calmly, watching Hahn practice with obvious delight.
