Global Best Actor: Starting with Picking Up Attributes in America
Chapter 76: Day 1 of Business!
Filming has officially begun.
The soundstage at Warner Bros. Studios was even more bustling than on the day of the rehearsal.
The stands were packed.
The staff kept issuing debugging instructions.
Chen Xun stood behind his familiar counter, his fingers unconsciously touching the three coins in his pocket that served as his lucky charm.
Director Michael Patrick King, holding a megaphone, made a final confirmation:
"Everyone, remember the rhythm, watch the indicator lights, and relax, just like during rehearsals!"
Chen Xun nodded, took a deep breath, and focused his attention.
"Action!"
Act One: A Day at the Williamsburg Hotel.
Max was lazily wiping glasses, unleashing her signature sarcasm at the newcomer, Caroline:
"Wearing Chanel here? Sweetheart, that outfit could pay for a month's rent here!"
Caroline, on the other hand, tried to straighten her back, attempting to maintain her precarious socialite dignity:
"This is a classic model, and I'm very adaptable!"
At this moment, Han Li, played by Chen Xun, peeked out from behind the counter.
He spoke in a tone that attempted to be authoritative but always lacked a certain imposing presence:
"Max, be more welcoming to newcomers. Our Williamsburg Hotel aims to be approachable!"
As he spoke, he habitually toyed with the coin in his hand, which twirled smoothly between his knuckles.
A few soft laughs came from the audience.
Han Li's attempt to establish authority, yet his obvious lack of confidence, contrasted subtly with his overly skillful coin tricks.
Max immediately retorted, rolling her eyes at Han Lee:
"A friendly route?"
"Boss, your 'buy one get one free' deal from last week almost got us wrecked by some thugs who tried to dine and dash!"
"Your approach is less reliable than Oleg's underwear style."
[Sharp Tongue Counterattack +3] dropped from Kate, and Chen Xun immediately absorbed it.
It was Chen Xun's turn to react.
In the script, he just shrinks his neck here.
But Chen Xun did not.
When his character, Han Lee, heard Max's complaints, a perfectly timed hint of embarrassment flashed across his face, but he immediately put on a brave face.
He stopped spinning the coin, tapped it lightly on the counter, and muttered:
"That was due to insufficient market research. I recently studied Eastern Feng Shui and redesigned my wealth corner; things will improve!"
His tone carried a charlatan-like confidence.
The audience was stunned for a moment, then burst into even louder laughter than before.
The reference to Eastern feng shui came out of nowhere, and combined with Chen Xun's serious yet slightly bluffing expression, the comedic effect was off the charts.
The director raised an eyebrow behind the monitor, a slight smile playing on his lips.
Next up is the scene with the cook, Oleg.
He came out carrying a plate, his thick Eastern European accent and sexually suggestive gaze sweeping between Max and Caroline:
"Ladies, would you like some special service today? My 'sausage' is my signature dish!"
He deliberately straightened his hips.
Max remained expressionless.
"Oleg, if your sausages are as soft as your jokes, we might as well go bankrupt!"
The audience burst into laughter and boos.
The camera then focuses on Chen Xun.
Chen Xun, who plays Han Li, shows a disgusted expression and begins to complain:
"It's immoral and affects the atmosphere!"
He also subconsciously fanned his nose with his hand, as if to fan away the foul smell brought by Oleg.
This subtle improvisation amused the audience once again.
The character Han Li is no longer just a punching bag; he has his own seemingly absurd logic and way of resisting.
Cashier Earl calmly added insult to injury, looking at Han Li's expression and slowly saying:
"Han, your face looks like you just found a bug in your payslip!"
Earl's words rhymed and had a great rhythm.
Chen Xun caught a blue attribute ball falling from Garrett's body.
[Rhythm and dry humor +3]
Chen Xun absorbed the information and felt that he had a clearer grasp of the rhythm of this American-style rhyme.
Filming continued.
In one scene, Han Lee tries to explain to Caroline why she needs to start with the most basic cleaning.
Chen Xun did not use the purely guilty approach found in the original script.
Instead, he took out three coins, tossed them solemnly in front of Caroline, then looked at the divination results and said seriously:
"Caroline, the divination indicates that your career needs to start from the bottom, to be grounded in reality, so that you can flourish when things go smoothly!"
He paused, then added, "For example, first, clean the floor thoroughly!"
Caroline, playing a fallen heiress, looked completely bewildered, while Max next to her burst out laughing.
"Does it flourish when it encounters water?"
"Boss, are you expecting her to collect our wages while she's mopping the floor?"
This combination of Eastern mysticism and capitalist exploitation had the audience in stitches.
Chen Xun's performance made Han Li's stinginess and neuroticism interesting and even a little cute, rather than simply annoying.
Throughout the recording, Chen Xun found that with the help of the "Favorability Vision," he was able to more accurately capture the audience's reactions and adjust his tone and facial expressions accordingly.
Max lost several of his "sharp tongue" attribute balls.
Caroline's resilience as a fallen socialite also provides a lot of green attribute balls related to "aura" and "emotion".
He even absorbed a purple [Calm Aura +6] from Earl.
This is absolutely a pleasant surprise!
When the director shouted, "That's a wrap for today!", the audience gave him a round of enthusiastic applause.
Many people were still laughing and discussing the Asian boss who could tell fortunes as they left.
Kat Dennings walked over and patted Chen Xun hard on the back:
"Okay, Chen! Your fortune-telling tricks are becoming your trademark! Teach me next time, I want to fool my landlord."
Beth Behrs also laughed and said:
"Chen, you've made Han Li so interesting! I almost actually believed your divination!"
Director Michael also showed a rare expression of approval:
"Chen, your improvisation today was fantastic. Keep it up. You've nailed the character of Han Li."
Chen Xun looked at the friendly glances from the staff and actors around him.
He knew in his heart that he had taken a solid first step in the "2 Broke Girls" crew.
The business at Han Li's restaurant was quite successful on its first day!
Chen Xun had just returned to his villa in Beverly Hills after removing his makeup when he heard his phone vibrating incessantly in his pocket.
When I took it out, I saw a FaceTime request from Christine on the screen.
He answered the video call, and Christine's face appeared on the screen. The background looked like a hotel room, and the lighting was a bit dim.
She seemed to have just taken a shower; her hair was still wet and wrapped in a towel. She was without makeup and looked a little tired, but her eyes lit up when she saw Chen Xun.
"Hey, Mr. Han Li!"
Her voice was a little hoarse, but tinged with amusement: "How was your first day of business? Did Max's sharp tongue drive you crazy?"
Chen Xun leaned his phone against the coffee table, slumped into the sofa, and loosened his collar.
"Almost! She was too aggressive; I almost used my mysterious Eastern powers to cast a curse on her!"
Christine giggled on the other end of the screen:
"I knew you could handle it, but what about the audience's reaction?"
"Not bad, they laughed at a few of my impromptu moments!"
Chen Xun briefly described the filming process, including the scene where he used feng shui to fool Caroline.
"Wow, you're amazing! You got the hang of it so quickly!"
Christine's eyes lit up with approval: "Looks like throwing you into a sitcom was the right thing to do. It's much more interesting than going on tour with us, isn't it?"
"At least I won't have to answer questions about love every day!"
Chen Xun complained, then looked at her and asked, "What about you? Where have you been today?"
"Paris! More screams, flashing lights, and the same old questions!"
Christine sighed, pulled the towel off, and ran her fingers through her wet hair haphazardly.
"I'm exhausted! Robert's practically asleep backstage!"
As she complained, she unconsciously licked her slightly dry lips, and her gray-green eyes appeared exceptionally clear under the screen light.
Looking at her slightly disheveled yet genuine appearance, Chen Xun felt a stirring in his heart.
After being apart for a few days, separated by a screen, the feeling of missing you became even more tangible.
