Chapter 23 The Arlington Family
In the sweltering summer, the snow on the summit of Mount Whitney has thinned to just the tip, making it look like the mountaintop is wearing a mini white hat.
The town of Serrane at the foot of the mountain became the best spot for viewing the scenery, with a view that seemed to be filtered by God himself.
Whitney Farm is named after Mount Whitney, because part of the farm is located at the foot of the foothills of Mount Whitney, which is also the farm's forest area.
The constant, piercing crackling sounds were unpleasant to hear, but they were sure to get your adrenaline pumping.
"Paul, we're here to hunt, not to have an arms party. If you fire this burst of bullets, all the small animals within a two-kilometer radius will have to buy tickets and run away. No one will dare to be prey here."
The other party acted like a ruthless bandit in a movie, cracking as he removed the magazine and quickly took out a new one from his person and loaded it, the whole action flowing smoothly.
He laughed wildly, then turned and started firing wildly at a thick spruce tree in the distance, as if the tree owed him eight million.
After firing a burst of bullets, Paul slung the gun over his shoulder, walked over, snatched the beer Ernst had just opened, and drank it all in one gulp.
"Awesome!"
"You politicians are all two-faced. In front of voters, you're all dressed up, all smiles, but if you weren't all in the same boat, who would guess that you need to release stress so much behind the scenes? No wonder people always say there are a lot of weirdos in Washington, that all their feelings are hidden under their suits."
Paul Arlington is the oldest member of the Arlington family in Ernst's generation, and he is 36 years old this year.
The Arlington family was a large family. Even John often said that his father, Ernst's great-grandfather, treated his wife like a sow that could give birth, a perpetual motion machine of reproduction.
John had eight siblings: two older brothers and two older sisters, and two younger brothers and one younger sister.
Interestingly, the Arlington family's prolific generosity seemed to end with John's generation; no matter how hard the eight siblings tried, none had more than two children. This trend continued with Whitney's generation, where all eight were only children.
Ernst even joked about it, saying, "At this rate, our generation might end up causing the Arlington family line to die out and become an endangered family."
Believe it or not, this almost came true, because Paul Arlington, who was 21, had married but had no children.
They went to the hospital for checkups and both of them were normal, but they just couldn't conceive.
Fortunately, five years ago, Ernst’s other cousin, Nathan, gave birth to the Arlington family’s first child at the age of 30, which finally put the entire Arlington family at ease.
That's why Ernst's family didn't criticize him for being a playboy in Hollywood. After all, for the sake of the next generation, everyone was much more tolerant of these minor flaws.
"There's no other way. Since we've embarked on this path, we have to abide by the rules of the game. No matter how dirty our past is, we have to present ourselves as Jesus on the surface, creating a sense of contrast."
Ernst curled his lip; he was only interested in people with contrasting personalities.
After chatting for a few minutes, the group began packing their gear and set off again, preparing to explore deeper into the mountains and forests.
The Remington 11, Beretta 390, and Browning Auto-5 are among the most commonly used shotguns in North America.
Since we're going hunting, we should definitely choose the most powerful gun.
As for AK and Desert Eagle, these are just for casual use and to satisfy your gaming cravings.
The biggest threats in the mountains are wild boars and jaguars; no matter which one you encounter, these guns are just suicide missions.
Wild boars have thick hides and tough flesh, making it difficult for AKs and pistols to inflict effective damage on them. Even if a shot is hit, it won't cause much of a fatal injury to a wild boar.
Basically, if you hit the opponent ten times and fail to kill them, one charge from the opponent will send you to your death.
Jaguars, on the other hand, are too agile and adept at lurking, making it difficult for you to have time to aim at your target when they hunt you.
Shotguns are different; they cause widespread damage, making them an excellent choice against wild boars and jaguars.
After walking for more than half an hour, the group finally found their target.
"These are five piglets. Their mother should be nearby. We can just hide and wait."
Not far away, several wild boar pups were frolicking in an open space. Ernst estimated that they weighed at least 70 or 80 pounds.
Piglets weighing 70 or 80 pounds can only be seen in North America.
In North America, wild boars can reproduce twice a year, with litters of four to six piglets. Crucially, they face virtually no natural predators. Lions and leopards, the true predators of wild boars, are based on the African savanna and pose no threat to North American wild boars.
In addition, North Americans don't like pork, and wild boar meat is tough and has a strong odor, so nobody buys it or knows how to cook it.
Even if someone wanted to eat it, no hunter would sell it.
You can hunt wild boar for your own consumption, but if you want to sell it, you need an infectious disease quarantine permit from the quarantine department, which is not only troublesome but also costs money.
It's already hard to sell, and you might even lose money. Who would want to do something so thankless and exhausting?
Don't underestimate quarantine. Whether in the United States or Canada, the issue of infectious diseases from wild animals is strictly investigated. Every year, many people contract various infectious diseases from eating wild animals.
This has led to a wild boar infestation in North America, with the government even begging people to hunt them, since it costs tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars every year just to deal with these wild boars.
Ultimately, it boils down to a lack of delicious food. Try putting that in China. Spending money on "managing" it? They only know how to protect it, afraid it'll be eaten into endangered species.
"Here it comes," John whispered. Ernst, who had been hiding under a large tree, quickly concealed himself. After a while, not finding his target, Ernst asked John in confusion, "Where are you? Are you getting old and your eyesight is failing?"
John didn't tolerate Ernst's behavior; his large, bear-paw-like hand nearly knocked him to the ground.
"Can't you see the birds moving?"
The once quiet forest in the distance was suddenly startled into flight by a large number of birds. Ernst realized that such a commotion could not have been caused if the mother pig had not returned.
Everyone held their breath and lay in wait. After a while, a huge figure appeared in their sight, and Ernst unconsciously swallowed.
"This is way too big!"
Wild boars in North America vary in size depending on the region, with those in the south being larger than those in the north.
However, generally speaking, adult wild boars weigh between 150 and 260 kilograms.
Ernst estimated that the wild boar in front of him weighed over 300 kilograms.
"It's really big. We're lucky today. This thing weighs at least 350 kilograms, maybe even 400 kilograms."
John was not afraid; instead, his eyes gleamed with golden light.
Such a big wild boar, if it were hunted down, it would be enough for this old guy to brag about for years.
"Paul, Diego, you two go to the left, Ernst and Kevin go to the right, Rodrigo go around and block the way, wait for my signal."
There were six people in total going into the mountains this time, and John was the only elder among them.
"John, why don't I come with you? Diego is enough on the left; he's a master hunter."
Diego Arlington, the grandson of John's brother, was a year older than Ernst.
Unlike Ernst, this guy grew up on his family's farm.
His family's farm is also in Visalia, but it's not as big as Whitney Farm, about half the size, though it's still a very large farm.
Located to the east and west of Whitney Farm, respectively, both are among the top five farms in Visalia, demonstrating the Arlington family's influence in the city.
So whether it's farming or hunting, Diego is a master, and the strongest of his generation.
"Stop talking nonsense, don't worry about me. When I was hunting, you weren't even placentas."
The group looked at each other, bewildered, and had no choice but to obediently comply.
After all, time waits for no one, and wild boars have a keen sense of smell. If they dawdle any longer, their prey might just slip away.
