Chapter 61 Eden Transfer Station
Chapter 61 Eden Transfer Station
Laura's heart wasn't set on the Garden of Eden, but rather on her friends in the lab and the transit station they had built in the Gobi Desert.
The oldest person at the transfer station was only sixteen or seventeen years old, and the youngest was even less than ten years old.
Perhaps because they had grown up in the laboratory, these children were wary and curious about Logan and his friends. They all kept their distance, peeking out with half their heads, constantly stealing glances at them.
Only the relatively older Carl, along with a few children, received them.
It was getting late, and the journey had left them all exhausted. Even Charles, who loved children very much, had lost all interest in talking to them.
Logan could only carry Charles into the room that Carl had arranged for him to rest temporarily.
He slept until the next day.
After waking up, Logan learns from Carl that there is an underground mutant shelter in Canada, and that the shelter has accepted their asylum application and sent a host to pick them up.
When the time comes, they will be able to cross the border and travel with their hosts to a mutant sanctuary in Canada.
However, according to the plan discussed with the shelter, they should have met with the host two days ago, but for some reason, it has been postponed and there has been no response yet.
On the lookout tower, the telegraph machine made a sound.
Beep beep beep!!
Carl, who had been standing guard by the fence outside, rushed into the house, answered the phone, and said, "This is Carl, please respond."
"This is the shelter. The people who are here to receive you have arrived. Please gather in the border forest before noon today. Someone will meet you there. Please reply when you receive this message."
The telegraph machine's receiver made a sound.
Logan, standing nearby, could clearly hear that the other person's voice was somewhat low.
"receive."
Carl put down the radio, let out a deep sigh of relief, and a smile finally appeared on his usually composed face. He turned to Logan and said, "They've finally arrived."
"Um."
Logan nodded, then couldn't help but look up at the distant border forest.
"I'll go tell them to pack their luggage."
Laura, standing to the side, volunteered to speak up. Since arriving here and reuniting with her friends, she had visibly become more lively.
Laura ran quickly down the watchtower and notified her friends one by one.
Carl watched Laura's retreating figure, smiled, and turned to Logan, saying, "Laura told me about your situation last night. Thank you for protecting her all this way."
"Of course."
Logan withdrew his gaze and sighed, "I also need to move to a different place to continue my life."
"You didn't have to take that risk."
Carl smiled. "With your abilities, you could have escaped more easily if you had abandoned Laura, but you still chose to save her. You are a true hero."
Logan smiled and shook his head, then said nothing more.
Soon, all the little mutants' belongings were packed up.
They had all escaped from the laboratory, and they didn't carry much with them; basically, each of them only had a small backpack that wasn't even fully filled.
Under Karl's command, everyone worked together to descend the Gobi Desert and headed straight for the forest. They needed to arrive before noon, but they didn't have much time to waste.
This forest in the Drax National Wildlife Refuge covers the border between the United States and Canada. The dense jungle has few checkpoints and border patrols, making it a good place to cross the border.
However, this seemingly safe route is never the first choice for illegal immigrants. In fact, they would rather die than choose this route unless absolutely necessary.
Because the wild beasts in the forest will deter any group of humans from trying to break into their homes.
Logan and Carl led the way, clearing away branches and obstacles in their path.
Behind them, Victor carried Charles closely, while the cowardly Caliban walked in the middle of the crowd.
His white robe, which covered his entire body, became a source of amusement for the children during their escape. Some mischievous children would occasionally grab a corner of the robe, which would scare Caliban so much that he would hold on tightly to the robe, afraid that these naughty children would tear it off.
His terrified expression made the children burst into laughter, adding some humor to the otherwise tedious journey.
However, once they entered the forest, the laughter subsided considerably. The strange growls that occasionally echoed from the depths of the forest caused a hint of worry to appear on the children's faces.
Fortunately, these low growls seemed to be just warnings, and they did not see any wild beasts along the way.
"It seems this forest isn't as dangerous as I imagined."
Caliban breathed a sigh of relief, and the worry in his heart gradually dissipated.
"Rebecca can communicate with wild animals. She told them that we were just passing by and meant no harm. Under normal circumstances, the wild animals would give way to us in a friendly manner, and they would not attack us unless we deliberately harmed them."
Laura spoke up from the crowd, reassuring Caliban that he didn't need to worry about attacks from wild beasts.
Upon hearing this, Charles, who was on Victor's back, suddenly turned around and looked at Rebecca, who was constantly communicating with the beasts around her with her mind. He smiled kindly and said, "Being able to communicate with beasts, it seems she and I are of the same kind."
His ability is to communicate with others using brainwaves, and even control other people's brains.
Rebecca's way of communicating with the beasts is similar to his.
"Professor, there are tons of clones now. Not to mention those from the same department, there might even be clones with the same abilities as you. Maybe one of the people chasing us is an imposter of yours."
Victor joked, "Logan has over twenty clones, but they're all dead."
Logan, who was leading the way, suddenly turned around and said nonchalantly, "It would be great if we had a clone of the professor. He's currently lacking a healthy body."
Charles's ability is to transfer his consciousness to other bodies. If there really is a clone of him, it would actually provide him with a complete body.
As they were talking, Karl suddenly stopped and pointed to a large tree in front of them, saying, "We're here, this is it."
It was an incredibly thick tree, which looked to be at least several hundred years old, forming a stark contrast with the surrounding trees. A sign hung on its thick trunk, bearing three brand-new scratches.
Carl walked up to the sign, examined it carefully, then looked around, frowning. "Strange, we were supposed to meet here, where are they?"
According to the plan with the shelter, the three large scratched signs were the meeting point, but there was no one around at the moment.
"Um?"
Logan walked over to Carl, but his keen insight made him freeze.
With a whoosh, the steel claws extended and stabbed straight at the open space in front of them.
"Hey!"
A panicked shout rang out, and a man slowly emerged from the tip of the steel claw spike.
He stared at the steel claws that were almost touching his eyes, the chilling glint of which made him break out in a cold sweat. He quickly raised his hands and said, "Don't be impulsive, I'm the one who's here to greet you."
Everyone looked at him. He was a man in his thirties, wearing a denim jacket and with a thin build. His ability was obviously invisibility, the kind that could even hide his clothes.
From behind the big tree, a muscular young man with long hair emerged, looked at Logan's steel claws, and nodded, saying, "Not bad reflexes. It seems the shelter can gain another powerful member."
He walked up to Logan. "Hello, my name is John. I've come to take you to the shelter."
The man who had been invisible before smiled and said, "You can call me the Invisible Man, or Klaus, whatever you like."
Logan looked at them, retracted his steel claws, and said in a deep voice, "Don't try to sneak around next time; it's not good to accidentally hurt someone."
Klaus scrutinized Logan's face and said, "You must be Wolverine. I've seen you in the comics. Honestly, you should sue those artists; they definitely made you look ugly!"
Just call me Logan.
Logan simply nodded, then introduced the professors and others behind him: "These are Charles, Victor, and Caliban. We hope you can take us to the shelter. We can also provide some protection along the way."
After all, when Carl contacted the shelter before, there was only a group of children. Now that several elderly people have joined, their opinions should be sought.
"no problem."
Klaus readily agreed, saying happily, "Actually, you don't need to introduce me. I know Charles, Professor X, the greatest biologist in the mutant world. You are simply my idol. The Sanctuary would very much like to welcome you."
"Thanks, but that's all in the past."
Charles waved his hand.
"Alright, we can talk about pleasantries later. We need to get out of here quickly."
John looked around warily and urged them on.
Led by the two hosts, the group quickly headed deeper into the forest.
