Chapter 15 Chris Makes a Visit
Chapter 15 Chris Makes a Visit
After leaving the casino in Nottland, Logan and Victor returned to their apartment and drank all night, reminiscing about their past until they finally fell asleep in the early hours of the morning.
Around noon, Logan was awakened by a phone call from Samuel, who urged him to hurry back, as the cargo had been unloaded and they needed to start their return journey.
Before leaving, Logan left Victor his phone number, hoping to stay in touch with him.
Back at the warehouse, Samuel and his two companions had clearly not slept all night, but showed no signs of fatigue; the all-night gambling spree had left them extremely excited.
The journey back to Santa Fe was much easier than the way there. With no cargo in the truck, the burden was lighter, and Logan didn't need to be as careful or tense as he had been when he set off.
After a day of driving, we've only covered half the distance.
This time, Logan was less demanding. He found a hotel, rested for a night, and only set off again after he had fully recovered.
Leaving Nevada and returning to the desolate streets of Santa Fe, the temperature noticeably became hotter.
Logan looked up at the blazing sun hanging in the sky and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
Even though it's almost autumn, the temperature in Santa Fe is still high, but thankfully Logan has adapted.
On the way, Logan chatted idly with Samuel about trivial matters until it was nearly evening before the four of them officially returned to San Antonio and to the Lawrence family's logistics warehouse.
However, they did not see Chris immediately.
After Samuel called to inquire, they learned that Chris had something to do today, but the other party had already sent a special person to deliver the money to them, and told them to wait where they were.
The group had no objections and waited smoking at the warehouse entrance for almost an hour before the belated manager finally arrived.
The reward of 20,000 per person did not increase because Logan was the team leader.
After feeling the thick envelope and confirming that the amount inside was correct, Logan breathed a sigh of relief.
This mission is now completely over.
"Aren't you curious about what kind of goods we're delivering?"
Samuel counted the money and looked at Logan, who was about to leave, and asked him a question.
When they first received the mission, they were quite curious about the cargo inside the truck, but due to Chris's instructions, they did not open it to check it without permission.
"Not interested."
Logan shook his head indifferently, "I only do things for money, I don't care about anything else."
He's no young man; nearly two hundred years of experience have instilled in him a habit of never meddling in other people's business, and many things don't necessarily need to be completely eliminated.
"Okay, actually we don't know what it is either."
Samuel shrugged, stuffed the envelope into his pocket, and said in a low voice, "But the pay is always so high, I bet the contents aren't simple, maybe even some contraband."
A three- or four-day trip can earn you the equivalent of several months' wages for an ordinary person; even a fool would know that what you find there is definitely not something good.
However, despite their curiosity, their years of experience had taught them that it's better to avoid trouble and that it's better not to know many things.
Moreover, Chris knew every detail of their trips afterward, which made Samuel realize that Chris must have informants in the team.
"Maybe." Logan shrugged dismissively and turned to walk out of the warehouse.
He was too lazy to waste his brain on these trivial matters; once he had the money, he didn't plan to stay.
After leaving the warehouse, we found the Chrysler that had been stored there in the open-air parking lot.
The sandstorms in San Antonio are very strong. Even if you only stay there for a few days, your car will be covered with a thick layer of yellow sand.
Logan gave his vehicle a quick wash at the automatic car wash next to the parking lot before heading straight to the supermarket.
Because of financial difficulties, their expenses were very low, and many daily necessities were in short supply. Their daily food consisted of simple buttered potatoes or some cheap milk and cereal.
Now that he has received a reward of 20,000, although it may not make him rich, Logan thinks it is necessary to improve the living conditions of his home a little, and at least let the professor and Caliban have a sumptuous dinner.
At a nearby supermarket, Logan bought a lot of things, including some food he usually couldn't bear to eat, as well as some personal items for the professor and Caliban.
After stuffing everything into the trunk, we drove across the border and into the familiar, dilapidated factory.
It was nearing dusk, and the sun, which had disappeared below the horizon, left behind a sky full of crimson afterglow.
The evening wind howled across the desert, and fine sand swept across like raindrops.
The abandoned factory, left unattended, appears exceptionally old in this environment. Many of the wooden doors and windows are rotten, the surrounding factory buildings are covered in rust, and many buildings that could not withstand the weight have completely collapsed.
"We need to move to a better environment from now on."
Logan looked at the desolate factory and murmured to himself.
This place not only has a harsh environment, but also suffers from large temperature differences between day and night.
The scorching heat during the day can bring the temperature here to nearly 50 degrees Celsius. If you put an egg on the sand in the morning, you can have a perfectly cooked "sand-boiled egg" by evening.
The nighttime temperatures were terrifyingly low, comparable to the arrival of winter.
Young people might be able to tolerate such a harsh environment, but the professor is far too old for this kind of place to live for an elderly person.
Fortunately, these days will soon be over. Once he gets another mission from Chris, he will have enough resources to lead the professor away from this hellhole.
Just as Logan was envisioning the future, two black cars parked neatly outside the factory instantly shattered his fantasy.
"Damn it!"
Logan's expression changed abruptly. He quickly parked the car and carefully got out to check the two sedans.
These two cars are obviously expensive and belong to wealthy people.
Why would wealthy people patronize a factory that looks so dilapidated?
Logan frowned, noticing the license plates on both cars; they were local Santa Fe plates.
He breathed a slight sigh of relief after seeing the license plate clearly. "Thank goodness, it's not Donald."
With a murmur, Logan didn't hesitate any longer and rushed into the factory.
In the dimly lit factory, there was only one incandescent light hanging from the ceiling for illumination.
Under the incandescent light, Caliban sat trembling on the sofa, his neck hunched, his face filled with terror.
Behind him stood three burly bodyguards in black suits, their expressions serious.
Opposite Caliban sat a familiar figure.
He sat comfortably on the sofa, arms outstretched, legs crossed, smiling as he looked at Caliban across from him.
Only after Logan opened the door did he turn around with a smile, squinting at Logan. "James, you're finally back. How did the mission go? Everything went smoothly, right?"
Logan frowned. "Chris, what are you doing here?"
Sitting on the sofa, restraining Caliban, was none other than Chris Lawrence!
Logan never expected that the Lawrence family would find this place!
It's worth noting that since becoming an Uber driver, his car has been his permanent home; he rarely returns except to provide supplies there.
Even with such precautions, the Lawrence family still managed to find out!
And
Chris showing up at our door is definitely not a good thing.
