Marvel's Return of the Inventor
86. Wall-E
On December 12, the fifth "Asia-Pacific University Automated Robot Olympiad Championship" officially kicked off.
Twenty-four university teams from 11 countries and regions will display their teams' entries in an all-round way in the next seven days.
The competition judging panel, composed of representatives from the Asia-Pacific Robot Development Association, delegations of tutors from universities, well-known entrepreneurs in the robotics industry, representatives from technology media, and selected senior civilian robot enthusiasts, will fairly score all entries.
At the same time, the Asia-Pacific Radio and Television Alliance will follow up and report on this competition throughout the entire process.
The robot of the HuaTech team is named "Wall-E", which is named after the 2008 science fiction animated film Wall-E produced by Pixar Animation Studio.
At that time, in order to name this robot, every member of the team had an idea, and there were constant disputes among each other, which caused a lot of trouble.
Finally, Zheng Xi had an idea and organized everyone to watch this god-level cartoon.
The name was decided.
Even the name of the next robot's name has been decided.
Since the theme of this competition is "Bionics", the WALL-E of the Huake University team is naturally very different from the image in the movie.
This is an upright walking humanoid robot with a head, body, limbs and skin.
Of course, perhaps to better express the bionic theme, the other twenty-three universities all chose such humanoid robots.
Judging from the appearance alone, this year's robots seem to be a little less creative and far less diverse than previous ones.
But don’t just take everything at face value.
All robots this time are equipped with artificial skin, which has never appeared in previous continental championships or international cups.
The significance of holding a robot competition is to create imagination, display talent, explore the unknown, exchange technology, and ultimately promote the development of science.
Previous games have done a good job in these aspects.
And this time, because of the participation of artificial skin, it is undoubtedly better.
On the first day of the competition, as an important structure that can most intuitively judge the level of bionics, the jury began to score the artificial skin of each team.
Under the 100-point scoring mechanism, Huake University’s ultra-new artificial skin achieved an average score of 95.01.
For comparison, the second-placed Edo University scored 88.18 points, and the third-placed Lion City National University scored 80.75 points.
This result was within Ding Sheng's expectation. After all, he used some of Marvel's black technology, which was basically a dimensionality reduction attack.
Edo University's new artificial skin represents the limit of the earth's primitive technology, and it is well deserved to score 88.18 points.
What surprised Ding Sheng the most was the National University of Singapore.
They used an octopus-like artificial skin that seems a bit old now. It is composed of three layers of rubber soft materials, the upper, middle and lower layers. Without reducing the touch requirements, they managed to reduce the cost below the competition line.
Great.
Starting from the fourth-placed Korea Institute of Science and Technology to the 24th-placed Asam Institute of Technology, there has been no better breakthrough in artificial skin.
The direct result is that the ratings of these colleges and universities are all squeezed into a narrow score range, with only a slight difference.
HuaTech has such a huge advantage, does that mean the championship is guaranteed?
No.
Although the theme of this competition is bionics, it is also a robot competition.
In addition to artificial skin, the robot's movable body structure, sensing system, recognition system, and intelligent system all need to determine the results through set competition events.
Then get the overall score.
The first real competition event is "fire extinguishing".
Well, literally.
The organizer will place a candle anywhere in a room with three rooms and two living rooms and set up many obstacles, and the participating robots need to extinguish the candle in the shortest possible time.
The shorter the time, the higher the rating.
This competition looks simple, but it actually tests the comprehensive level of the robot's processing chip, fire extinguishing device, walking ability, and flame, photosensitive, sound, infrared, and ultrasonic detectors.
Indispensable.
Compared with previous years, this year’s focus is more focused on walking ability.
The reason is very simple. In previous years, except for Edo University, almost all universities have chosen crawler or wheel-type robot structures, which is to facilitate the robot's walking and successfully put out fires in the fastest time.
But this year is different. Not only did Edo University bring a significantly updated fifth-generation "as" upright walking humanoid robot, but all universities also equipped their entries with upright walking technology for the first time.
If a robot wants to walk upright like a human, it must first overcome three major problems: ground reaction force control, balance system, and foothold control.
This requires making joints for robots similar to humans.
Simply put, the more joints and more refined they are, the stronger the robot’s walking ability will be.
"It is said that the new generation of AS has 108 mechanical movable joints. In this competition, all our teams are accompanying the prince to study."
Du Gui's gossip has always been relatively well-informed.
Of course Ding Sheng knew what the 108 mechanical movable joints represented.
Ding Sheng was not involved in the body design and intelligent system design of the robot WALL-E. After all, this was a team competition, and he couldn't do everything by himself.
But he remembered clearly that WALL-E only has 18 commonly used mechanical joints.
"The results from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology are out, 3 minutes and 51 seconds."
At this moment, another team member ran over, and the results of the first team in the fire extinguishing project were announced.
"The harmonic reducer that is most needed for joints is not Sansan Industrial's strength. Although their robot has 24 mechanical joints, we can challenge this result."
It can be said that Zheng Xi knows this old rival for many years quite well.
Soon, the Chinese University of Science and Technology team came on stage.
In the end, Walli’s time was 3 minutes and 47 seconds.
"Challenge Succeeded"
Du Gui clenched his fists excitedly. He was one of the main force in the design and production of mechanical joints and harmonic reducers.
The next teams came on stage one after another, and most of them were within five minutes. Several universities among them had never been involved in upright walking robot technology before, so they were quite embarrassed to appear today. The worst one even took 1 hour and 48 minutes. .
The game that was originally scheduled to end at 6 pm was postponed to 9 pm.
As of Edo University's appearance, China University of Science and Technology is temporarily ranked first.
The organizers seemed to want to save the suspense until the end and deliberately arranged for Edo University to appear last.
According to regulations, although only one member of each team can enter the stadium to watch the game, other members of all teams did not choose to leave. These people all wanted to know for the first time how the fifth-generation AS with 108 mechanical joints could perform. How fast.
Including Ding Sheng.
This is a good opportunity to understand the true technological level of the earth.
"Come out, come out"
The on-site spectator representatives from Hua Science and Technology University ran back as fast as they could, without even having time to gasp.
"How many seconds"
As soon as Zheng Xi opened his mouth, he knew if there was anything. It didn't matter if he had minutes or not. He directly asked for the seconds. This is professionalism.
"27 seconds 12."
