Chapter 85 Cats and Dogs vs. Mice

Leila remembered she had some food in her pocket, so she took out two pieces of jerky and gave one to Crookshan and one to Bell.

Crookshank accepted the jerky in a friendly manner, slowly chewing it on Hermione's lap, his yellow eyes fixed on Ron without blinking.

Bell pressed the jerky under his paw, showing no intention of eating it immediately, and looked at Ron.

Lyra and Hermione didn't notice, but Ron, who was being stared at by a cat and a dog, felt extremely uncomfortable, especially since he had no liking for Crookshanks and was always worried that the cat would catch the mouse.

“Hermione, please tell your cat to stay put,” Ron said angrily. “Scabbers is sleeping in my bag.”

Crookshank had finished its jerky and gently wiggled the tip of its fluffy tail, its yellow eyes still fixed on Ron; Bell's ears perked up, its black eyes watching Ron slowly reveal his sharp teeth.

Harry didn't notice the strange situation where all the cats and dogs were staring at Ron. He was tired and sleepy after training and just wanted to go to bed as soon as possible, but he hadn't finished his astronomy homework.

Harry yawned, pulled his satchel over, took out parchment, ink, and a quill, and began to draw a star chart.

“You can copy mine if you want.” Ron had just finished writing as well. He opened his bag, took out his star chart, and handed it to Harry.

The change is happening right now—

In a flash, the cat and the dog pounced on Ron's backpack.

"Oh!" Ron roared, snatching his backpack, but Crookshank's four paws had already firmly gripped it, and Bell had begun viciously tearing at a corner of the backpack.

"Let go! You two despicable beasts!"

Ron struggled to wrest the backpack back from the claws and teeth of a cat and a dog, but the situation was clearly tense, with two against one.

"Bell!" Leila called out the puppy's name in surprise and went over to pick it up.

Hermione screamed and pleaded, "Ron, don't hurt it!"

All eyes in the common room were on him. Ron couldn't possibly outmaneuver the cat and dog, so he started trying to throw the two creatures off his backpack—

He swung his backpack around wildly, and Bell nimbly jumped aside, but it crouched down, baring its teeth, looking ready to attack again at any moment.

But Crookshank still clung to the backpack until Ron's spotted mouse peeked out from the gap at the top of the backpack—

"Catch that cat!" Ron shouted. At that moment, a ginger-yellow figure and a white figure jumped onto the table, chasing after the terrified mouse. As Crookshan released his backpack, Bell also leaped up from the ground.

"And that dog!" Ron shouted as he chased after the poor mouse that was trying to protect him.

Lyra and Hermione rushed over, and the twins followed to help.

George lunged forward to grab the swallow-tailed dog, but missed; Fred jumped onto the sofa to catch the cat, but also missed.

The mouse scurried among dozens of legs in the room and suddenly darted under a cabinet.

Neither Crookshan nor Bell caught the mouse. One of them stretched out its front paws and furiously dug under the cabinet, while the other howled madly at the location of the mouse.

Hermione quickly ran over and grabbed Crookshank by the waist, struggling to lift it onto the desk to soothe it; Lyra picked up the barking puppy and disciplined it; Ron lay on the ground and, with great effort, grabbed the mouse by the tail and dragged Scabbers out.

"Look! Spotty's all skin and bones!" Ron shouted, holding the mouse up in front of the crowd with red eyes. "Keep your pets under control!"

"I'm sorry, Ron." Lyra saw that the mouse was indeed in a pitiful state, not only was it thin and emaciated, but it was also losing a lot of fur. "I will pay attention to Belle in the future and make sure it doesn't chase Spotty anymore."

“Crooked Hill doesn’t know it’s wrong,” Hermione said in a trembling voice. “All cats catch mice, Ron.”

"That cat has been eyeing Scabbers for a while now!" Ron roared, seeing Hermione's nonchalant expression as if it were the cat's natural instinct to catch the mouse. "That beast just heard me say Scabbers was in my bag, it did it on purpose!"

“Let’s be reasonable, Ron,” Hermione said, speechless. “Crooked Hill can only smell mice, do you think it can also—”

“There’s something strange about this cat!” Ron shouted. The people around him were amused by Ron’s childish and unreasonable behavior, which made Ron even angrier. “Spotty was here first, and it was sick!”

“Hey Ron, calm down—” George patted Ron on the shoulder, trying to break up the fight.

Fred patted Ron on the back: "Animals are sometimes just unreasonable. Today the cat chases the mouse, tomorrow the dog chases the cat, and the day after the mouse bites the dog—"

"Anyway, don't get too angry about this," the twins said in unison.

But Ron wasn't having any of it this time. He forcefully broke free from their hands, strode up the stairs, and went back to the boys' dormitory.

The next day, while having lunch in the Great Hall, Lyra, Fred, and George all noticed that the atmosphere between Hermione, Harry, and Ron was a bit off.

The three exchanged a glance and then went their separate ways.

"What's wrong?" Lyra asked Hermione quietly, and then learned that Hermione and Ron had argued again, Harry's Hogsmeade application form was not signed, and Professor McGonagall said that he could not go without a guardian's signature.

“Oh, boys can be a little childish sometimes,” Lyra comforted Hermione. “Don’t take it to heart.”

“Ron’s brain is only a teaspoonful,” Hermione said irritably, cutting a piece of chicken pie. “And now that Black hasn’t been caught, he’s encouraging Harry to sneak off to Hogsmeade, completely disregarding safety—”

Seeing that someone was finally on her side and listening to her, Hermione completely exploded, ranting and raving about all the boys' unreliable behavior.

As Lyra listened, she kept adding various desserts to Hermione's plate: strawberry pudding, velvet cake, vanilla ice cream scoops, preparing to use the magic of sweets to defeat Hermione's anger.

Meanwhile, the twins figured out why Harry and Ron were upset, and their banter saved the peace of lunch.

Percy also heard that Harry couldn't go to Hogsmeade, and he comforted Harry, saying, "They make a big fuss about Hogsmeade, but let me tell you, Harry, it's not as good as people say."

He meticulously listed them one by one: "The candy store is nice, but the Joker's joke shop is just as dangerous as Fred and George; Butterbeer is the signature drink, but kids shouldn't drink too much; apart from the Screaming Booth, which is somewhat worth seeing, there's not much else to see. Honestly, Harry, you haven't missed anything amazing."

Harry: "......"

Others: "......"

Thank you so much, Percy. It would have been better if you hadn't said anything; it just makes things more regrettable.
