Chapter 76 The Big Furry Guy in the Forbidden Forest
“This way.” George shone his flashlight at the fork in the road at the edge of the Forbidden Forest and finally chose a direction.
The flashlight was bought by Lyra at a Muggle store, but the twins modified it.
In an attempt to figure out what magical principle could replace the battery, the two secretly disassembled the radio in their house, almost failing to put it back together—and were attacked by Mrs. Weasley with a feather duster.
Lyra remembered the Muggle cars that Mr. Weasley had modified, turning them into spacious, comfortable, flying, and invisible magical cars that also clearly had their own little tempers.
Perhaps the twins inherited their hands-on, inventive talent from Mr. Weasley.
"Look here!" Fred exclaimed excitedly, pointing to the huge footprints in the mud. "Wow, these paw prints are at least half a foot long!"
Lyra and George were also very excited; they were about to become the first students at Hogwarts to see a hippogriff!
During dinner, George and Fred heard a rumor from the older students that Hagrid had somehow acquired a batch of hippogriffs and was hiding them in the Forbidden Forest, intending to use them in the students' lessons.
Wow, these are magical creatures that Hogwarts has never seen before!
Unfortunately, neither Lyra, Fred, nor George chose the Protecting Magical Creatures class this semester.
But could this little difficulty stop the trio of night-time adventure experts? The three of them silently made their plans for tonight's night out with just a glance.
"Look!" George, who was walking in front, excitedly pointed ahead in a low voice.
“They are so beautiful!” Lyra and Fred murmured, completely stunned.
Twelve strange creatures, unlike anything Lyra had ever seen before, stood not far from them.
They have the body, hind legs, and tail of a horse, but their forelegs, wings, and heads appear to be those of an eagle, with a steel-colored beak and bright orange eyes.
Each hippogriff has a thick collar of feathers around its neck. At first glance, these half-horse, half-bird creatures may seem shocking, but once the initial shock subsides, their beautiful, shimmering fur becomes utterly captivating.
The Hippogriff's fur is uniquely characterized by a transition from feathers to fur, with different colors: dark gray, bronze, pink, chestnut, and finally jet black.
Lyra couldn't help but walk forward, but was quickly stopped by George and Fred.
“Be careful! Hippogriffs are very proud,” George said. “You could easily offend them by suddenly approaching them like that.”
“They’re sleeping,” Fred said. “We’ll observe them from a distance tonight and then try to get closer during the day. That’s the safest approach.”
"Then I must touch their fur when the time comes!" Lyra was completely captivated by these beautiful creatures; their strange, fluffy fur was just so fluffy!
The three of them watched quietly for a while before starting to head back towards the castle.
As she reached the edge of the forbidden forest, Leila heard a rustling sound coming from the bushes.
“Guys, something’s coming—” George was the first to draw his wand.
Fred also raised his wand, shielding Lyra behind him.
They feel like this thing is getting closer and closer...
Lyra gripped her wand in her right hand, staring intently at the bushes.
A huge black claw parted the bushes and gently stepped onto the ground.
A large dog with light-colored eyes, jet-black fur, and the size of a bear appeared before the three of them.
"Merlin—" Lyra couldn't contain herself, "The big, fluffy guy!"
Fred: "..."
George: "......"
Oh no, the plush toy fetish is acting up again—the twins are reminded of the sad memories from last semester when Lyra dragged them out to protect Hermione the cat, resulting in a barrage of scolding, point deductions, and detention, even though they had a lot of fun throwing poop balls at the school hospital.
But the huge black dog only stared at them warily for a while, briefly bared its one-inch-long fangs, then turned and ran away in another direction.
"Why does it feel like this dog is being a bit perfunctory when it's trying to intimidate us..." Fred scratched his nose.
George breathed a sigh of relief and loosened his gold and red tie. That dog was too big. Although there were three of them, the dog could pounce and bite very quickly. Even if they didn't lose their lives, they would inevitably get hurt.
“I think this dog is a bit thin…” Leila recalled the big black dog she had just seen. Although it was huge, it was skinny and bony, with dull fur that hung loosely on its ribs—clearly, the dog had not been well cared for.
"Probably a stray dog that doesn't know where it will live," Fred guessed.
“I’ve never seen it in the Forbidden Forest before,” George said. “It probably just wandered here recently.”
*
Even after returning to her dorm and lying on her warm four-poster bed, Leila was still thinking about that big dog.
“It must have suffered a lot…” Lyra gently stroked the puppy’s soft belly as she gently stroked the dog’s soft belly next to her and made a decision.
"We can't just watch a fluffy little thing go hungry, can we?" Leila kissed the puppy's ear affectionately. "I'll introduce you to new friends later, Belle. Sweet dreams."
The next morning, after Lyra finished her herbalism class, she took her own homemade jerky, along with a large steak and five or six sausages that she had packed from the Gryffindor table that morning, and slipped away from the twins to quietly slip into the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
“I remember being around here last night—” Lyra circled the bushes several times but didn’t see the big dog from last night. Just as she was about to leave in disappointment, she turned around and saw the black dog, as big as a bear, standing not far behind her, staring at her quietly.
"Hi, cutie~" Leila greeted warmly, "Do you remember me? We just met last night—"
The big dog glanced at the black-haired girl's school uniform, its gaze lingering on the gold and red tie and the Gryffindor insignia before squatting down on the spot.
Seeing that the big dog didn't bare its teeth or seem to intend to attack, Leila took out a package containing food from her bosom and tentatively took a few steps towards the dog.
"I have some delicious food here, would you like some?"
The large black dog sniffed deeply a few times, its eyes lighting up.
Lyra captured that moment perfectly. She quietly took a few more steps toward the big dog—
"Look, this is steak, cooked perfectly, only medium-rare~" Leila took out the steak separately and showed it to the big dog.
The big black dog's ears twitched.
"And there are delicious sausages too~" Leila took a few more steps forward, and was almost in front of the big black dog.
"And there's also rabbit jerky made with a secret recipe—" Lyra finally pulled out her trump card, her hand already on the big dog's ear.
