Struggling to survive at Hogwarts
Chapter 7 Discussion
Thea didn't notice that Jennifer's expression was off. She took the documents Jennifer handed her and began to read them word by word.
The more Thea read, the wider her smile grew, and the deeper her suspicions about Mrs. Green became.
"Where did you get this information?" Thea asked again, just to be sure of its accuracy.
"I found out about it over the past few days from Mary the cook, Uncle Jim the doorman, and Aunt Susan the baker."
"You wrote down what Aunt Susan said too?"
“No, no,” Jennifer quickly waved her hands in denial. “I know you can only believe half of what Aunt Susan says, so I wrote everything down at the end. And when I was asking them about Darcy, I discovered a huge secret!!!”
Thea looked at Jennifer with some surprise. Jennifer was amused by Thea's expression and whispered in Thea's ear, "The cleaner, Ella, told me that Mrs. Green has a mysterious wishing room. Everyone who goes in gets what they want most."
"Don't you think this is just a childish trick? If Mrs. Green really had a wishing house, why would she still be here? She would have been the richest woman by now!" Thea questioned.
Jennifer, however, insisted, "I got Ella drunk before she told me this, it's absolutely true!"
Thea was momentarily swayed by Jennifer and began to seriously consider the possibility. Seeing that Thea's expression had softened, Jennifer continued to whisper more examples in her ear to corroborate the veracity of her information.
Thea listened to Jennifer's chatter as she tried to determine the truth of the story. According to Jennifer, the children in the orphanage seemed to have all heard this rumor when they were young: Mrs. Green had a wishing room, and whenever someone went in to make a wish, that person's wish would come true.
But as the children grew up, they stopped believing this rumor. They simply thought it was just a bedtime story from their childhood, and completely false.
But Jennifer's current confident assertion only fueled Thea's suspicions.
Just as the two were discussing, a commotion arose outside, followed by a knock on the door, and a childish voice came from outside:
"Dorothea, Jennifer, the Dean wants you to go to her office."
Jennifer opened the door from the inside, and Thea followed behind her. As they stepped out of the room, they learned the source of the commotion:
It turned out that Andrew and his close friends were making a fuss, shouting, "Thea the little monster is going to be kicked out! Along with her little swarm! They're going to beg for food!!!"
When Andrew finished speaking, the people around him cheered and made a fuss, creating a chaotic scene.
Jennifer was so angry that her eyes turned red, and she was about to rush forward to beat up those annoying people, but Thea held her back.
Jennifer turned around in confusion, only to see Thea calmly handing the candy to the little girl who had delivered the message, and asking:
"Do you know why the dean called Jennifer and me to his office? Is there anyone else who needs to go besides us?"
The little girl hadn't expected to receive candy just for delivering a message. Hearing Thea's question, she quickly replied:
"The dean heard about your fight with Andrew, that's why he called you over. Besides the two of you, Andrew is also coming."
Andrew, who had been cheering from the sidelines, was stunned. He had only come to join the fun after hearing that the little monster had been called to the office, but he hadn't expected to get himself involved. He secretly groaned inwardly, but still threatened, "Little monster, you're finished! Mrs. Green will definitely kick you out!"
Thea maintained her smile, handed the little girl another candy, and then pulled Jennifer toward the dean's office, not glancing at Andrew once, as if he were a bug that was an eyesore.
This was the first time Andrew had been ignored, and his anger burned fiercely. He strode forward, intending to pull Thea over, but before his hand could touch her, Thea moved aside, leaving Andrew with nothing.
Andrew failed to catch anyone and turned to meet Thea's cold gaze. He was immediately stunned, and then heard Thea say, "Get out of my way! Don't make me hit you again!"
Watching Thea and Jennifer's departing figures, Andrew stood there for a while until people around him reminded him that he should also go find Mrs. Green, at which point he seemed to wake up from a dream and ran towards the office.
When Thea and Jennifer arrived at the dean's office, Mrs. Green was the only person there. She was doing accounts, and the large table was covered with various documents.
Hearing the knock (the door wasn't closed, and Thea was standing in the doorway knocking), Mrs. Green looked up from her documents, adjusted her glasses, and seemed to be trying to identify the two little girls at the door, but she quickly realized who it was and warmly invited the two girls in.
He quickly tidied the table, pulled out chairs for the two girls in front of him, gestured for them to sit down, and poured them a glass of hot milk.
Jennifer felt uneasy and turned to look at Thea. Thea tugged at Jennifer's hand, signaling her not to be nervous.
Mrs. Green noticed their subtle movements, her eyes flickered, and she continued to urge them to drink milk.
No one spoke in the office, and the atmosphere became somewhat awkward until Andrew's shrill voice rang out: "Mrs. Green, are you trying to get rid of the little monster?"
Mrs. Green was startled by the voice, and a flash of disgust crossed her eyes. Although it disappeared quickly, it was clearly seen by Thea, who had been watching her closely.
“Oh, Andrew, you should have knocked before you came in.”
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Green, I was just… too excited.”
Andrew said rather insincerely, and then continued to ask Mrs. Green if she wanted to drive away the little monster Thea.
Mrs. Green was so annoyed by him that she hesitated for a moment before handing Andrew a piece of candy from the drawer, hoping he would quiet down.
Once Andrew calmed down, Mrs. Green, fearing he might ask something else, immediately cut to the chase and asked Dorothea, "Dorothea, may I ask why you fought with Andrew?"
“I fought with him because Andrew called me a little monster and was about to hit me.” Thea keenly realized that Mrs. Green’s words were “fight with Andrew” rather than “hit Andrew.”
The difference in wording between the two made Thea realize that Mrs. Green was currently on her side, which made her feel a little relieved, but she did not let her guard down.
Mrs. Green was even more pleased to see how cooperative Thea was. She was about to say something when she was interrupted.
"No! Mrs. Green, she's lying!!!"
The harsh voice rang out again, and Mrs. Green frowned, asking in return, "Then Andrew, tell me, wasn't it you who provoked Thea that day, and that's why Thea retaliated?"
Andrew was speechless for a moment and couldn't say anything.
Seeing this, Mrs. Green immediately pressed her advantage, saying, "I've already heard about this from Windsor, and Jennifer was invited to be a witness today. Andrew, do you have anything else to say?"
Jennifer was suddenly called on and immediately looked up, only to find that no one was looking at her, so she lowered her head again.
Ultimately, Andrew was punished.
Just as the three of them were about to head back, thinking the matter was over, Mrs. Green asked Thea to stay, saying there was something else she wanted to tell her.
Andrew was furious when he saw this and immediately slammed the door and left.
Jennifer glanced at Thea with some concern, but Thea gave her a reassuring look, and Jennifer left with peace of mind.
Everyone else has left, leaving only two people in the empty house.
