The car drove out of the residential area and quickly merged into the city's traffic.
Lin Jinyu stared intently at the road ahead, her fingers lightly tapping the steering wheel, as if she were organizing her thoughts.
Su Maiqi didn't speak either, but just quietly watched the scenery rushing past the car window, waiting for her mother-in-law to speak first.
Although the car heater was on, the temperature inside was still much lower than at home.
This subtle temperature difference actually made Su Maqi's mind clearer, and her thoughts became more lucid.
Finally, Lin Jinyu spoke up: "If your father were still alive, he would also support my career."
This abrupt and seemingly unrelated statement left Su Maiqi momentarily speechless.
She paused for a moment before realizing that Lin Jinyu was referring to her deceased father-in-law, Gu Tianze, whom she had never met.
Su Maiqi opened her mouth, unsure how to respond to the topic.
Her understanding of Gu Tianze was limited to Gu Tingyu's occasional snippets of conversation and the treasured photos in her home.
In those yellowed photos, Gu Tianze always appeared gentle and refined, standing next to the young Lin Jinyu in the pictures, looking very well-matched.
Seeing that Su Maiqi didn't respond, Lin Jinyu seemed unconcerned and continued speaking to herself:
"Tingyu is a lot like his father. His father loved his children very much, but sadly he passed away early."
Lin Jinyu's voice carried a hint of nostalgia, but her eyes remained focused on the road ahead. "Tingyu cares so much about the child, partly to make up for his father leaving so early."
But seeing him like this, I felt quite comforted. These past years haven't been easy for this child.
She paused, her voice suddenly softening, "Thank you and Chengze for giving him a real home."
These words touched Su Maiqi's heartstrings.
She recalled Gu Tingyu's doting love for Xiao Chengze, how he gently comforted the crying child late at night, and how he even postponed important meetings to be with the child.
“Tingyu is a good father,” Su Maiqi replied softly, a sentiment she expressed from the bottom of her heart.
Lin Jinyu did not respond immediately, and the car fell silent again.
The view outside the window gradually changed from an upscale residential area to a bustling commercial street, with more and more pedestrians and increasingly dense traffic.
About two minutes later, Lin Jinyu spoke again, his voice low and serious:
"He actually cares about you a lot and cherishes your marriage. No matter how you choose to live your lives, I wish you happiness."
These words were like a pebble thrown into a calm lake, stirring up ripples in Su Maiqi's heart.
"Thank you, Mom," Su Maiqi replied softly, trying to calm herself down.
Although she is still unsure of what will become of their marriage in six months, she is truly grateful for Lin Jinyu's understanding and support.
Lin Jinyu smiled slightly and didn't say anything more, but focused on driving the vehicle through the busy intersection.
The sudden ringing of a cell phone broke the silence inside the car.
She glanced at the caller ID; it was Gu Tingyu.
"Hello," Su Maiqi answered the phone, her voice gentle.
"Maggie, my meeting just ended, and I was just about to pick you up," Gu Tingyu's voice came from the other end of the phone, tinged with fatigue but full of concern. "Are you home?"
“I’m with Mom. She’s going to the jewelry street area anyway, so let’s meet there,” Su Maiqi replied, glancing at Lin Jinyu, who nodded in agreement.
"Mom's going too?" Gu Tingyu's voice held a hint of surprise. "That's great! I'll have Mario and his wife come along too, how about the whole family have lunch together?"
Before Su Maiqi could answer, Lin Jinyu gently shook her head and said softly, "I won't participate in your business discussions; I have other things to take care of."
Su Maiqi nodded and said to Gu Tingyu on the other end of the phone, "Mom said she has something to do and won't be having dinner with us. Let's meet at the entrance of 'Jin Yu Man Tang' restaurant; it's close to the jewelry street and the environment is nice."
“Okay, I’ll leave now and be there in fifteen minutes,” Gu Tingyu replied, his tone more relaxed. “Mr. and Mrs. Mario have been shopping on Jewelry Street all morning. I just contacted them, and they’re really looking forward to seeing you.”
"Okay, I understand. See you in a bit," Su Maiqi replied softly, then hung up the phone.
The car returned to silence, with only the faint hum of the air conditioner and the indistinct sound of traffic from outside.
Lin Jinyu drove the car onto a relatively wide avenue, lined with high-end shops on both sides, their windows gleaming with the light of various jewels.
This is Yuncheng's most famous jewelry street, which gathers flagship stores and specialty stores of major jewelry brands, including Chenxing's store.
The car eventually stopped near a high-end restaurant, just a few minutes' walk from the "Golden Jade Hall" restaurant.
The two got out of the car and stood on the bustling street, surrounded by a dazzling array of jewelry shops. Sunlight shone on the shop windows, reflecting a brilliant light.
"Mom, would you like to have lunch together?" Sumai invited again. "Mario and Mario are very funny, you'll like them."
Lin Jinyu shook her head, a gentle smile in her eyes: "No, I have a date today."
"A date?" Su Maiqi asked, somewhat surprised.
"Yes, with a few old friends," Lin Jinyu explained with a smile.
“Then I wish Mom a lot of fun,” Su Maiqi said sincerely.
Lin Jinyu smiled lightly and said goodbye, "I should go now. Don't keep Tingyu and the guests waiting too long."
After saying that, she gently hugged Su Maqi, then turned around, got back into the car, started the engine, and drove away from the jewelry street.
Su Maiqi stood there, watching Lin Jinyu's car gradually disappear into the traffic, her feelings complicated.
Lin Jinyu is neither like a traditional wealthy mother-in-law who is controlling and meddles in everything, nor like an ordinary mother-in-law who sacrifices everything for her children.
She possesses a cool and aloof quality, as well as a sense of boundaries.
This is actually a part that Su Maiqi really likes. Living with a mother-in-law like that wouldn't be too tiring.
Although she entered into this marriage by chance and out of necessity.
But she was lucky.
Both Lin Jinyu and Gu Tingyu supported her and understood her in their own ways, giving her the space and strength to pursue her dreams.
Even though she had Xiao Chengze, she never lost her freedom.
She felt nothing but gratitude for all of this.
She knew that Lin Jinyu was actually a very restrained person, and that what she said today was already a very emotional outpouring for her.
Because she truly wanted her son and grandson to be happy.
As a woman, Su Maiqi completely understood this. She was also very grateful for Lin Jinyu's restraint in not putting direct pressure on her.
