As evening fell, Mo Yan rang the doorbell of Gu Tingyu's house.

The afterglow of the setting sun shone through the glass window in front of the door, casting a warm orange-red halo on the floor.

The air was filled with the aroma of food, mixed with a faint scent of roses—the kind of fresh flowers that Su Maiqi had recently started to arrange in her home.

The person who opened the door was Su Maiqi. She was wearing a light pink loungewear dress, her hair was casually tied up, and the scar on her forehead was almost invisible.

With a gentle smile on her face, she looked like an ordinary housewife.

Those once sharp eyes were now filled with tenderness, but they had lost some of their former brilliance.

"Mo Yan, you've arrived!" she greeted warmly. "Just in time for dinner, let's eat together. I tried making a few new dishes today."

Mo Yan was taken aback. In his memory, Su Maiqi was always dressed in professional attire, decisive, independent, and confident.

But the gentle and virtuous woman in front of him made him feel somewhat uncomfortable.

He still remembered how she used to speak eloquently at board meetings, her eyes sparkling with wisdom.

"Tingyu will be back soon, please have a seat." Su Maiqi turned and walked towards the kitchen. "I'll go check if the soup is ready. I've been learning to make soup recently, I hope it tastes good."

Mo Yan sat on the sofa in the living room, his gaze unconsciously following Su Maiqi's figure.

The sound of spatulas clattering came from the kitchen, along with her soft humming.

Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, bathing her in a golden glow, creating a warm and beautiful scene.

Such a scene was unimaginable before.

Su Maqi used to be always in a hurry, even when she was at home she was dealing with work documents, where would she have the leisure to hum a song in the kitchen?

Before long, Gu Tingyu returned.

As soon as he entered, Su Maiqi greeted him like a cheerful little bird, took his briefcase, and helped him take off his suit jacket.

Her movements were practiced and natural, as if she had been doing this for many years.

"Are you tired today? Mo Yan is here, so I cooked an extra portion of rice."

She tiptoed and gently kissed Gu Tingyu on the cheek. "Go wash your hands first, I'll plate the last dish."

Gu Tingyu's gaze softened noticeably. He put his arm around her waist and placed a kiss on her forehead.

"I'm not tired. What delicious food are you making today? It smells amazing."

His voice carried a hint of weariness, yet it couldn't hide his gentleness.

Such a tone would never be heard in the company.

Mo Yan watched this scene with mixed feelings.

After the car accident, Su Maiqi's personality seemed to undergo a complete 180-degree change.

She transformed from an independent career woman into a gentle and virtuous wife.

She seemed to have forgotten her past pursuits and dreams, and was simply enjoying ordinary days.

He didn't remember Gu Tingyu, but quickly accepted that he was his husband.

They were completely unaware of the truth behind the contract marriage.

Gu Tingyu has also changed. He is no longer the cold and aloof business elite. At home, his every move is filled with rare warmth.

Several home-style dishes were quickly laid out on the table: stir-fried green peppers with pork, stir-fried lettuce with garlic, tomato and egg soup, and a plate of tempting sweet and sour pork ribs.

In the very center is a clay pot filled with steaming lotus root and pork rib soup.

The dishes were all simple, but they smelled wonderful, showing that the person who cooked them put a lot of care into them.

Mo Yan said, "Your body has just recovered, isn't doing these things too tiring?"

“It’s okay,” Su Maiqi said with a smile. “Cooking is fun and it helps me calm down.”

Those inexplicable headaches actually lessen a bit when I'm cooking.

Mo Yan took a bite of the ribs and found the taste surprisingly good—a perfect balance of sweet and sour, and the meat was very tender. He exclaimed sincerely, "I never knew your cooking was so good!"

"Really?" Su Maiqi's eyes lit up. "That's good. I really enjoy cooking and waiting for Tingyu to come home."

Although I can't remember many things, I want to be a good wife.

This statement surprised both Mo Yan and Gu Tingyu.

After being hit on the head, her entire personality seemed to turn upside down, completely opposite to what it was before.

Su Maiqi used to be a woman who was completely devoid of romantic idealism.

Her relationship with Gu Tingyu was the perfect combination of colleague and bed partner.

Now, however, she has become a devoted wife who cherishes her husband and enjoys family life.

After the meal, the aunt came over to clear the dishes and clean up.

Mo Yan followed Gu Tingyu to the study.

Gu Tingyu poured himself a glass of whiskey and then poured one for himself as well.

The amber-colored liquor shimmered under the light, reflecting his solemn expression.

"What were the survey results?"

He asked bluntly, his voice carrying a hint of suppressed anger.

Mo Yan took a document out of his briefcase:

"Police investigations revealed that the driver involved in the accident was named Zhang Ming, and he was a gambler."

He had been drinking that night and drove a car borrowed from a friend. This friend was a driver for a company executive and had secretly lent Zhang Ming his boss's car.

"Zhang Ming's blood alcohol content was above the legal limit at the time, and his speeding caused the accident."

He has been arrested according to law, and the car owner has made corresponding financial compensation.

Gu Tingyu frowned: "It's that simple?"

Mo Yan took a sip of wine and continued:

“I conducted an in-depth investigation into Zhang Ming’s background. He was in debt to loan sharks and his life was a mess.”

His ex-wife, who has two children, had to sell the house to pay off his debts.

He now lives on a minimum subsistence allowance. His parents live in the countryside and can only make a living by farming.

"I've had his parents, ex-wife, and children monitored, and so far there haven't been any abnormalities in their lives."

Gu Tingyu's gaze gradually sharpened: "You think this wasn't an accident?"

Mo Yan nodded: "I always feel that this is too much of a coincidence. Zhang Ming has now been sentenced, and the owner of that car has also made financial compensation."

On the surface, everything seems to have settled down.

But the accident happened at night, when there were very few pedestrians and vehicles on the street. It's too much of a coincidence. Why that particular night, and at that particular intersection?

Judging from Zhang Ming's personal circumstances, he is very likely willing to take risks and sacrifice himself for huge profits.

Gu Tingyu stood up and walked to the window.

Night had fallen over the city, and the distant lights resembled scattered stars.

His shadow was elongated by the light from the window and cast on the floor, making him appear exceptionally lonely.

“Continue the investigation.” His voice was low and cold.

"If Zhang Ming really has a problem, he wouldn't be foolish enough to immediately improve his family's living conditions. We should closely monitor their situation and investigate Zhang Ming's other connections."

Mo Yan watched his retreating figure and knew that he was truly enraged.

“I’ve already had someone follow up,” Mo Yan said. “I will investigate all suspicious leads thoroughly.”

Gu Tingyu turned around, his eyes filled with coldness: "Whoever is behind this, I will not let them get away with it."

His hand gripped the wine glass tightly, his knuckles turning white.

The night outside the window seemed to grow even darker because of his anger.
