In this post-apocalyptic world, I unexpectedly became a star galaxy master.
Chapter 50 Going to the Second Base
The snow on the highway was not as thick as in the mountains and forests, only reaching up to an adult's calves.
The car made a creaking sound as it ran over her, which was a novel experience for Hongtang, and she felt a little excited.
Before the apocalypse, no one would have imagined that it would snow in Yangcheng. In the past, if Hongtang wanted to see snow, she had to fly north.
There were other tire tracks on the road, but Hongtang preferred to drive where no other car had gone before.
However, after driving a short distance, she gave up on this approach. There might be ice beneath the snow, causing the wheels to slip. Following the tire tracks would avoid this.
After having enough fun, Hongtang sped up and drove off in a cloud of dust. If anyone had been nearby, they probably would have only seen the trails of snow kicked up by the car's taillights.
Hongtang didn't have a specific destination; she just wanted to go into the city to fight zombies and earn crystal cores, so following this road would lead her into the city. The city was crowded, so there should be many zombies as well.
However, not every section of the road is smooth; some sections are blocked or cut off by heavy snow.
If heavy snow blocks the road, Hongtang can use her spatial abilities to collect the snowdrifts. However, if the road is completely blocked, she will have to take a detour.
She has infrastructure robots that can build roads or teleport directly there. But now that she's out and about, there are too many unknowns, so she should try her best to act like an ordinary person.
After wandering around in circles, Hongtang realized she had strayed from her original route. She even encountered a mutated gray wolf along the way.
She guessed it must have escaped from a zoo after the natural disaster. She had never heard of such a ferocious animal in the wild before; if it had, it would have been eaten by the people of Yangcheng long ago.
Without Hongtang even lifting a finger, Ha Ge leaned halfway out of the car, stretched out his little paws, and crackled with electricity, turning "Wolf Brother" into roasted meat.
The fragrance was so enticing that both the person and the cat were completely mesmerized.
I'll store it in my storage space first, and give it to Brother Ha tonight.
I parked my car on a random roadside spot at noon and had a simple lunch. Before I could even wipe the grease off my mouth, I saw two people helping each other, limping towards my car.
Both were bundled up tightly, only their eyes showing. Upon closer inspection, Hongtang noticed their clothes were somewhat dirty and torn, and one of them had bloodstains on his calf. However, due to the cold weather, the bloodstains were frozen solid.
Hongtang rolled down the car window and was the first to ask, "Who are you people? What's going on?"
"Comrade, hello!" the injured man said. "We are from the First Base reconnaissance team. We had an accident while on a mission and would like to ask you to take us back to the First Base. Cough cough..." Before the injured man could finish speaking, he coughed violently, and Hong Tang felt like he was about to cough up his lungs.
The young man next to him quickly added, "This is Chen Jinghe, the captain of our reconnaissance team. I am his colleague, Zhang Chengcheng."
Hongtang raised an eyebrow, thinking to herself that she hadn't checked the almanac before going out today, and she had actually run into an old acquaintance.
Aren't these two the police officers who were in charge of Tang Li's car accident case before? They even went to her home to investigate.
"Oh, it's Officer Chen and Officer Zhang. Please get in the car." Hongtang opened the car door and let the two of them in.
Chen Jinghe was taken aback and asked in confusion, "Who are you?"
Hong Tang pulled down her mask, revealing her face. "I'm Hong Tang. You came to my house before when you were investigating Tang Li's car accident. By the way, how exactly did Tang Li die?"
Zhang Chengcheng recognized Hongtang and her face lit up with joy. She quickly replied, "Her husband cheated on her and wants her to leave with nothing."
From those two sentences, Hongtang understood the meaning: it was her husband who did it. She couldn't help but sigh; as far as she knew, Tang Li was utterly smitten with her husband.
Following the route provided by the two, Hongtang drove towards the second base.
"Officer Chen, how did you get injured?" Hongtang asked Zhang Chengcheng as she drove, asking her to retrieve the first-aid kit from the back of the car, which she had just put there from her spatial storage.
Chen Jinghe's injuries were quite serious. Although she couldn't treat him with her healing abilities, she could still provide him with some external wound medication.
Even though it's the end of the world and people's hearts are unpredictable, Hongtang isn't afraid that the two of them might have malicious intentions towards her.
From Chen Jinghe's earlier use of the word "comrade," Hongtang understood his mindset: he was an outstanding soldier who put the interests of the country and the people above all else.
This person deserves her help.
Moreover, when Zhang Chengcheng went to the back to get the first-aid kit, she did not show any greed or desire for her own supplies.
“We encountered a mutated wolf on the road. It was extremely ferocious, and several of us were injured. Later, we got separated and had to walk back. Fortunately, we met Miss Hong,” Zhang Chengcheng said while treating Chen Jinghe’s wounds.
Hongtang: It can't be such a coincidence, it's that roasted wolf in her space, right?
"You can call me Xiaotang or Miss Tang from now on." Just don't call me Xiaohong, or I won't hesitate to turn on you.
“Oh, okay, Miss Tang.” Zhang Chengcheng readily agreed and continued, “After the rainstorm, I awakened my healing ability. Luckily, I was with Officer Chen when we got separated and gave him some basic treatment, otherwise… It’s just that my current ability level is too low. Fortunately, Miss Tang has some medicine here.”
Zhang Chengcheng launched into a long, rambling speech, saying everything she should and shouldn't have said.
"It's the apocalypse now, things are different from before. Miss Tang, how did you survive? Where do you live now? What are your plans for the future?" Chen Jinghe, who had been silent, finally spoke. As expected of a detective, he got to the heart of the matter with just one question.
"After resigning, I was camping all the time. Later, it got extremely hot and rainy, so I just went to the countryside. I only recently found a chance to go back to the city. I don't have any specific plans right now, I'll just take it one step at a time."
Hongtang was seven parts truth and three parts falsehood, using the words she had prepared beforehand to evade the issue.
Zhang Chengcheng scratched her head. "Then Miss Tang, why don't you stay at the Second Base? The base was only recently built and is still accepting survivors. It's not safe for a pretty girl like you to be out there alone. There are not only mutated animals that attack people, but also zombies and evil people and superhumans who do all sorts of things like burning, killing, and looting."
Staying at the second base? That suggestion seemed pretty good, and Hongtang decided to take it.
"By the way, Miss Tang, have you awakened any special abilities?"
Having received so much information all at once, Hongtang felt very grateful to Zhang Chengcheng, but on the surface she looked puzzled.
"Zombies? Superhumans? I haven't encountered any since I started out. It was when I first came to the countryside that people would suddenly fall ill and die. Their skin would turn bluish-gray when they died, which was very scary."
"Is your superpower the white light you just released? I don't have that, but I can roughly sense where the danger is and where it's relatively safe. Does that count as a superpower?" Hong Tang made up a story on the spot.
"Well, I guess you could say that. I'm not entirely sure either. So Miss Tang can sense danger. No wonder she was able to enter the city safely."
The group chatted casually for three hours before finally arriving at the second base.
Before Chen Jinghe and Zhang Chengcheng got out of the car, they repeatedly reminded Hongtang that the world had changed and she must be careful and discreet in her actions, and especially "keep her wealth hidden." In particular, she had a big fat cat, which would make her an easy target.
Hongtang naturally accepted the kind reminder with humility.
