Reincarnation and Rebirth

Chapter 39 Sending Warmth in the Middle of the Night

The village chief of Suhe Village is named Su Dewang. As his name suggests, he is a highly respected figure in the village.

Looking at the scene in the courtyard, Su Dewang looked annoyed. "Su Yang's mother, I'm really sorry. I went to the county government this morning and rushed back as soon as I received the news, but I was still a step too late." As he spoke, he slammed his hand on the stone table in the courtyard. "Don't worry, whoever took it, I'll make them spit it out."

"Village chief, this is not your fault."

"Sigh, where did Su Yang go?"

Wiping away her tears, Ms. Wu choked out, "I don't know either. When he left last time, he said he would be back before the end of the month, but now he's just disappeared."

“Su Yang’s mother, don’t be too sad. Su Yang is so filial, he definitely won’t abandon you. Su Hao is still young and needs your care. You must take good care of yourself. I’ll have my wife bring some food over later. You have to hold on.”

Wu's eyes welled up with tears. "Village chief, thank you so much. When Su Yang comes back, I will definitely ask him to thank you."

Su Dewang waved his hand, "Sigh, Su Yang is a good kid. I don't believe he would do such a thing to the villagers. It's just that the villagers are having a hard time these days, and there's been trouble on the border. Don't blame everyone."

Wu wiped her eyes. "I know, village chief."

Not long after the village chief left, her wife and daughter-in-law brought Wu a few pounds of grain, some vegetables, a small jar of oil, and ten eggs. Wu was deeply grateful as she accepted the gifts.

The village chief's wife was also a kind woman. She took Wu's hand and comforted her, "Sister, you have to be strong. Look, Hao is still young and waiting for you to take care of him."

Upon hearing this, Su Hao immediately patted his chest and said, "Grandma Village Chief, I've grown up. I can do a lot of work and take care of you."

"Okay, okay." Everyone present was amused by the child's words, and a smile finally appeared on Madam Wu's face.

"Little sister, I'll be going now. If you need anything at home, just come to me. Although we're not rich, we can still afford simple meals."

"No, no, no, I've already caused you too much trouble. Don't worry, when Su Yang comes back, I'll make sure he delivers the money."

The village chief's wife smiled, not taking it to heart. This time, it was her eldest daughter-in-law, Su Chunmei's mother, who came. She curled her lip in disdain, inwardly cursing, "It's almost New Year's, and nobody's well-off. I don't know what my in-laws were thinking, sending food to this family who's ruining our household registration. They should be giving their own son something good to eat." But she only dared to complain in her heart; in the family, the mother-in-law was still the head of the household.

That night, after everyone in her family had fallen asleep, Su Wan'er quietly went out and arrived at Su Yang's house. Seeing the empty courtyard and the damaged gate, she sighed, "It's all because of poverty."

She lightly climbed onto the roof of Su Yang's house and looked down. She saw the grandfather and grandson lying together on the kang (a heated brick bed), covered with a thin, patched quilt. It was obviously not warm enough. Upon closer inspection, she realized that they hadn't even heated the kang. It was still quite cold at night in the eleventh month.

Su Wan'er searched her spatial storage thoroughly and finally found a relatively ordinary cotton quilt. When she left the palace, she had casually taken several brocade quilts from inside; this one must have accidentally slipped in.

He threw the quilt, along with twenty catties of rice and flour, a small piece of freshly killed wild boar meat, and two pheasants, into Su Yang's living room. After thinking for a moment, he decided to leave some herbs behind. Su Yang's mother must have been ill from years of poor diet and overwork, while little Su Hao was born weak and they hadn't had the money to properly care for him in recent years. He hoped that these herbs could improve their health and help them.

Finally, she left ten coins, not daring to give more, for fear of causing them trouble.

The commotion in the living room woke up Madam Wu. She immediately opened her eyes and exclaimed excitedly, "Yang'er, is that you?"

She was met with silence; Su Wan'er had already quietly left.

Su Hao also woke up. "Grandma, what's wrong?"

"There's some noise in the main room. Hao'er, stay put and let Grandma go check it out."

"I'll stay with you," Su Hao said obediently.

The grandfather and grandson entered the main room and, by the moonlight streaming in through the window, stared at the things on the ground, remaining lost in thought for a long time.

"Hao, Hao'er, are you seeing things? Where did those things come from?"

Su Hao mustered his courage and went over to check. He immediately exclaimed excitedly, "Grandma, Grandma, are we dreaming? So much food..." After saying that, he covered his mouth tightly, afraid that someone would hear him and that all this food would be lost again.

Wu stepped forward shakily, rubbed her eyes hard, pinched her arm, felt the pain, and then lowered her voice in surprise, "Hao'er, quick, help Grandma hide."

"Is that Dad back?"

Wu was stunned for a moment, then rushed out and checked the small courtyard inside and out before returning dejectedly. "No, it's not your father. Your father won't come. Why aren't you coming in to see us?"

"Did the gods give these to me? Did God hear my pleas?" It turned out that before the little guy went to sleep, he kept begging God to have pity on his grandmother and to let his father come back quickly so that nothing bad would happen to him.

Suddenly, Wu knelt down and kowtowed towards the door, saying, "Thank you, Bodhisattva, for your miracle. Thank you, Bodhisattva, for your miracle." Su Hao also knelt down and kowtowed in a similar manner.

Three black lines dripped from Su Wan'er's forehead on a tree outside the door.

"Hao'er, you absolutely mustn't tell anyone about this."

"I know milk."

Seeing that the grandmother and grandson had packed up their belongings, Su Wan'er felt relieved and left.

After entering the house, Su Wan'er returned to her space, and Xiao Bai immediately came over, "Master, you did a good deed, why do you still look unhappy?"

"Xiaobai, am I really useless?"

Why does Master think that way?

"I saw them being bullied today, and I didn't dare to stand up for them," Su Wan'er said, blaming herself.

“Master, there are many things in this world that ordinary people cannot solve.”

"But I'm not a normal person..."

"Master, what do you plan to do? Are you going to stand up and stop the villagers when they cause trouble? Or are you going to take out the money right now to compensate the grandfather and grandson? Have you thought about the consequences of doing so?"

"What consequences? At worst, we'll just part ways and leave the Su family. It's not like I can't survive," Su Wan'er said defiantly.

Xiao Bai sighed, "Of course Master can have that many, but Master, don't forget what you promised the previous Master. Also, the reason you traveled here is with a mission. If you fail to complete the mission, you will also be reduced to ashes, and this space will also disappear."

Su Wan'er gritted her teeth, "The last point is the key, isn't it? If the space is gone, you will cease to exist."

Xiao Bai said aggrievedly, "Master, how could you think of me like that? Yes, I don't want to disappear, but I don't want you to disappear either. After all, we have been together for three lifetimes."

Su Wan'er was stunned. "What? Three lifetimes?"

"Alas, the master failed to complete the mission in his previous lives, and now everything has to start all over again."

"Xiaobai, what exactly is this mission...?"

Xiao Bai sighed, mimicking Su Wan'er, "Actually, it's quite simple: just get Zi Yun Kingdom back on the right track."

"Then I'll just stop the Purple Flame Kingdom from invading the Purple Cloud Kingdom. I'll go tomorrow and poison the Purple Flame Kingdom's emperor with a dose of medicine."

Is that really so domineering? But things aren't that simple.

"Master, it has nothing to do with the Purple Flame Kingdom. These are all predetermined and cannot be changed. Alas, I don't know how to explain it. Master, please upgrade the space quickly. Once it reaches the fourth level, open the bookshelf. There will be an introduction inside. You will know then."

"Can't you just tell me directly?"

"I'm sorry, Master, I can only assist you, but I cannot reveal any information. Otherwise, I would have said it in my previous life."

Okay, okay, this damn fate can't be defied.
