Crossing Over to Yamada Love

Chapter 6 A Bowl of Steamed Egg Custard

Mo Lan swallowed another mouthful of steamed egg custard, and seeing that there was still more than half left in the bowl, she gestured for her grandmother to give her the bowl.

Wang looked at Mo Lan with confusion, but still obediently handed her the bowl, since it wasn't hot anymore anyway.

Mo Lan scooped up a spoonful of steamed egg custard, gently blew on it, and brought it to her grandmother's lips.

"Grandma, have some food. You're so tired all day, you've never had anything good to eat. Let Lanlan feed you today." Mo Lan's words were full of sincerity.

Wang's eyes instantly welled up with tears, not for the steamed egg custard, but for her granddaughter's thoughtfulness. Her Lan'er had grown up. She knew how to be filial to her, and she was content.

Wang wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes without even using a handkerchief, and said with a relieved smile, "If you don't want milk, Lan'er, eat quickly."

"No, I won't drink milk, and neither will Lanlan. Let it cool down then." Seeing that her grandmother wasn't eating, Mo Lan's face fell, and she was about to put the bowl down.

Don't blame her for being sentimental; this era is different from the one she lived in. From the original owner's memories, she knew how poor her family was. She knew that her grandparents, parents, and siblings worked hard every day, yet they ate very poorly.

To make money, she needs to observe the environment, decide what to do, and get her family to accept her advice. None of these things can be accomplished overnight.

She might not be able to afford to feed her family well herself, but she could still share a bowl of steamed egg custard. As for why she gave it to her grandmother first, firstly, because her grandmother held the most important place in her heart; and secondly, because her grandmother was an elder. No one could say anything about it. As for her grandfather, she felt a little embarrassed to give it to him.

She couldn't give any to her parents either, because they were her juniors and she'd be criticized if she did. Her older siblings were out of the question too. But the younger sister was fine. Mo Lan planned to feed the rest to her younger brother after her grandmother had eaten a few bites.

With tears in her eyes, Wang swallowed the steamed egg custard. She felt it was the most delicious food in the world, even though she had eaten many better and more precious foods before. But none of them could compare to this steamed egg custard before her, because it contained her granddaughter's love for her.

Everyone around was watching Mo Lan and Wang Shi. The people from the eldest son's side looked pleased, while those from the second son's side looked on with jealousy and disdain.

Mo Lan watched as her grandmother took two bites and then pushed her mouth away, refusing to open it again. She didn't insist anymore; she figured she'd earn money in the future so her grandmother could eat well every day.

“Come on, San’er, open your mouth, I’ll feed you.” Mo Lan held out the spoon to Xiao San’er.

The little guy swallowed hard, his face serious, and said, "Sister, eat! My head bled a lot, I need to eat eggs to help me recover. San'er doesn't like eggs." He then turned his face away, as if afraid of being tempted again.

Looking at the little one's expression, Mo Lan's eyes stung. She put the spoon to Xiao San'er's lips and said, "If Xiao San'er doesn't eat, I'll be sad. If I'm sad, my head will hurt. Can you bear to see me have a headache?"

The little boy looked at his older sister, puzzled, trying to discern the truth in her words. Would his sister be sad if he didn't eat? He didn't want his sister to be sad or have a headache. After thinking it over, he opened his mouth and put the steamed egg custard in it. It smelled so good! He didn't want to swallow it.

Mo Lan looked gently at the satisfied expression on the mistress's face. She completely ignored the second wife's expression. "What do you think? I don't care! I'm just making steamed egg custard for my family, so what! Dissatisfied? What does it have to do with me!"

"A mere steamed egg custard, and you're all passing it around like this? When will this end? If you don't want it, give it to Dalang and Ju. Look how thin they've become. You don't care about them because they're not from your household." Madam Cui watched enviously from the side. Although she didn't care for the steamed egg custard itself, she didn't want to let the children of the eldest son's household benefit from it.

Mo Lan glanced at her, then suddenly laughed. She said in a crisp voice, "Third Aunt is right. This steamed egg custard is worthless in Third Aunt's eyes. I'm just unlucky, so I treasure it."

Mo Lan glanced at Cui Shi's disdainful expression, as if she were someone who had never seen the world, and continued, "I'm really fortunate to be able to eat steamed egg custard. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't be able to eat any steamed egg custard at all. Thank you, Auntie."

"What do you mean? How did you get this benefit from me? Explain yourself!" Cui Shi didn't understand Mo Lan's words.

"Third Aunt, don't worry, I didn't mean anything by it. I just don't want to eat this steamed egg custard. If you want it, you can have Sister Juhua come over so I can push her head off the stone. That way, I'll give her the steamed egg custard." Mo Lan's voice wasn't very loud, but it caused a stir among the crowd.

"What? Lan'er, you mean you didn't trip and fall on a stone because you weren't walking carefully? It was Chrysanthemum who pushed you?" Madam Wang was shocked. She quickly asked Mo Lan.

Mo Lan was puzzled as to why no one asked how she got injured. They assumed she tripped and fell because she wasn't careful while walking! Please! She's nine years old. She's not a little baby anymore; how could she accidentally trip and fall?!

"You fell because you weren't watching where you were going, don't blame my Ju. Erlang carried you back. He said you tripped over a stone and bumped your head, what does that have to do with Ju?" Madam Feng immediately shouted when she heard Mo Lan mention that her granddaughter had pushed her.

"That's right! My Ju is so sensible, how could she possibly push you? This little girl is already so bad, blaming her older sister when something happens. What will she be like when she grows up? Mother, you have to stand up for me!" Cui cried, seeking her mother-in-law's support.

"What are you howling about? Ju isn't without a mouth, do you think she can deny it? I'm not dead yet. Who dares to ride on our second branch's neck?" Madam Feng said, looking unyielding.

"Erlang, go to your third uncle's and call your sister Ju'er over. Sister-in-law, you don't need to call her. Your eldest brother and I wouldn't wrong the child. Ju'er is also a granddaughter of the Mo family; we're not that heartless." A strange light flashed in Wang's eyes. She told Erlang to go and call Mo Ju'er.

Erlang responded, glanced at Molan, and seeing the reassuring look in his sister's eyes, he turned and went out to his third uncle's room to call for help.

"Master, say something! The eldest branch of the family can't just falsely accuse the second branch of our family!" Madam Feng pushed Mo Jin.

"Stop shouting. I believe my brother and sister-in-law will handle it." Mo Jin glanced at Madam Feng and frowned as he spoke to her.

“Father-in-law, why are you criticizing Mother-in-law? Didn’t you hear how Lanlan wronged Ju’er? She’s your own granddaughter! If you don’t stand up for her, she’ll be eaten alive! How will my daughter and I live then?” Cui Shi started wailing as soon as she saw her father-in-law wanting the eldest son’s family to uphold justice.

"Stop shouting, let's hear what Lan has to say." Mo Quan tapped his pipe, stopping the crowd. He then glanced at his younger brother, Mo Jin. His brother was a good person. It was just that his sister-in-law and her daughter-in-law were somewhat inappropriate.

Seeing that the room had quieted down, Mo Lan cleared her throat and said, "It's like this, I found some bird eggs in the woods today, so I brought them back and was going to give them to Grandma so she could cook them while she was cooking dinner, and we could all eat them together tonight." She paused here.

Seeing everyone's expressions, she continued, "When I was almost at the edge of the village, I ran into Brother Zhu and Sister Juhua. They asked me what I was carrying, and I said it was bird eggs. They asked for them, but I didn't give them to them, saying that Grandma would cook them for us to eat that night. But then..."
