Crossing Over to Yamada Love

Chapter 416 Teasing Xue Man'er

“Sister is so lucky. Mother-in-law is such a kind person that you don’t have to pay your respects to her morning and evening. If this were in the capital, you would be the envy of everyone,” Xue Man’er said to Mo Lan.

If this were in the capital, she'd probably be talked about to death, Mo Lan thought to herself. But she smiled and said, "Miss Xue is right. I also think I'm very lucky. Not only do my family love me, but I also married a good husband, have such wonderful in-laws, and two such lovely children. How could I not be envied?"

After hearing what Mo Lan said, Madam Xue laughed and said, "You shameless girl, you don't even know how to be humble when someone praises you."

"Mother, what's there to be modest about? I'm just lucky." Mo Lan said with a smile as she pulled Madam Xue along.

Xue Man'er's eyes flickered as she watched the two being so intimate. Was Mo Lan scheming or just carefree? If she was scheming, she was sometimes too frank, so straightforward that it was almost unbearable. If she wasn't scheming, she seemed to understand everything, and most people couldn't outwit her. Her personality was truly hard to fathom.

After a few more words, Mo Lan called out, "Mother, we should go to the vegetable garden. Where is Father? Is he coming with us?" Mo Lan then asked her father-in-law.

“Sure, I have nothing else to do anyway. I often think about this vegetable garden while I’m in the capital,” Master Xue agreed.

“Okay, I’ve been so busy these past few days I haven’t had time to go. Let’s go now,” Madam Xue agreed. Xue Man’er, however, frowned. What was there to see in the vegetable garden? They all looked so excited.

However, Xue Man'er didn't say anything, but followed behind the others to the vegetable garden.

When she arrived at the vegetable garden, Mo Lan looked at the vegetables and felt relieved. The green beans were finished, the persimmons were gone, the eggplants were gone, the peppers were almost done, and there were only some old cucumber seeds left on the cucumber trellis.

Once those are gone, the field is full of Chinese cabbage and radishes. There are all kinds of radishes: green radishes, white radishes, "Xinlingmei" radishes, red radishes, and so on.

"Mother, these vegetables aren't growing very well. I think we should fertilize them," Mo Lan said to her mother-in-law after carefully examining the vegetables.

“I think so too. We have nothing to do today, so let’s fertilize the vegetables,” Madam Xue nodded.

"Zhen'er, you'll be a member of the Xue family sooner or later. You should lend a hand. All the daughters-in-law of the Xue family have to do these things," Madam Xue said to Yu Zhen'er.

Although Yu Zhen'er blushed, she nodded. She was happy that her future mother-in-law treated her like family.

“Mother, I’ll join you too.” Xue Man’er stepped forward as well.

"Whatever you want. Just don't mind the dirt and the hard work," Madam Xue said casually.

"How could I? My mother and sister don't mind, so how could I?" Xue Man'er said, thinking to herself: What you can do, I can do too. I will not back down.

Just then, two servants carried over a wooden bucket with a lid on. After they put the bucket down, they said, "Reporting to the master, madam, young master, and mistress, the fertilizer has arrived."

Master Xue waved his hand, and the servant withdrew.

Granny Bai stepped forward and opened the lid of the wooden bucket, immediately releasing a stench that made people want to vomit.

Xue Man'er looked at the yellowish-white contents in the bucket in front of her, and her stomach churned. This, this is... this is too disgusting.

Mo Lan secretly chuckled at Xue Man'er's distressed appearance. Actually, they didn't usually have to do the work of applying manure to the vegetable garden; they just watched. There were servants and maids; they didn't lift a finger themselves. The reason they did this today was mainly to annoy Xue Man'er.

"Miss Xue, what's wrong? Why are you so pale? Actually, this farmyard manure is the best for vegetables. With it, vegetables can grow well. Without it, vegetables would be ruined. Why did the vegetables you ate this morning taste so good? It was because of this farmyard manure," Mo Lan explained to Xue Man'er.

Xue Man'er thought about the dishes she had eaten that morning, and then looked at the yellow and white stuff in the bucket. Her stomach churned. Was this what she had eaten? She couldn't hold it in any longer and ran to a corner to vomit.

Seeing her vomit, none of the Xue family members moved, exchanging glances with each other.

After vomiting, Xue Man'er, supported by her maid, came over again. She bowed to Madam Xue and said, "Mother, I am not feeling well, so I will take my leave now."

Madam Xue glanced at her and said, "Since you can't stand it, then leave. No one will stop you."

Xue Man'er looked somewhat embarrassed, while Mo Lan laughed and said, "Miss Xue, you still want to be your husband's secondary wife? You can't even do this much, yet you want to enter this family. Do you see your mother-in-law, me, and Zhen'er as you? To enter this family, these are things that must be done. Since Miss Xue can't do them, then let's just drop the matter of being a secondary wife."

As Mo Lan finished speaking, Xue Man'er's face turned from white to red. She was cornered by Mo Lan. If she were to leave now, she would admit defeat. Her mother-in-law was still there, and Yu Zhen'er was also there. If she left, wouldn't she be as good as them? But she was unwilling to stay. That thing was really disgusting. She didn't know how they could stand it.

After struggling with her thoughts for a long time, Xue Man'er decided to stay. If they could endure it, she could too. She would simply not look at them or breathe in their air. She couldn't let them look down on her, nor could she give them any excuses.

"Sister, I was just feeling a little unwell before, but I'm much better now. However, I've never done these things before, so please give me some guidance." Xue Man'er wasn't about to let Mo Lan off the hook. Since I'm doing it, you should do it first too. If you don't do it well, none of us will do well.

“Okay.” Mo Lan agreed, then said to Madam Xue and Yu Zhen’er, “Mother, Zhen’er, this garden is small, you two go to the field first and keep an eye on things. I’ll teach Miss Xue first, and once Miss Xue has learned, we can do it together.”

Madam Xue and Yu Zhen'er nodded, and Yu Zhen'er helped Madam Xue up to the ground.

Mo Lan pulled Xue Man'er to the wooden tub. Mo Lan felt a little nauseous at the sight of it, but it was still within her tolerance.

First, in her modern life, she lived in the countryside and had seen everything. Second, she was of low status after transmigrating, and she was used to seeing how farming relied heavily on manure. Third, she was now a mother, and she had to take care of her two children whenever they needed to poop or pee, so she could tolerate seeing them now.

She picked up a wooden spoon from the bucket, scooped up a spoonful of yellowish-white substance, and handed it to Xue Man'er, saying, "Miss Xue, look, this is all good stuff. The more of this stuff there is, the stronger the soil will be, the better the vegetables will grow, and the better Miss Xue's meals will taste."

Xue Man'er saw the spoon that Mo Lan handed her and quickly covered her mouth. She felt her stomach was churning violently. Fortunately, she had already vomited up most of what she had just eaten, otherwise she would have vomited on the spot.

"Miss Xue, watch carefully. Scoop a spoonful of fertilizer and pour it evenly around the vegetables. That's it. Miss Xue, try it too." After Mo Lan finished, she handed the spoon to Xue Man'er.

Xue Man'er looked at the spoon Mo Lan handed her, torn between two choices. She didn't want to take it. She didn't want to do these things. With her delicate and precious nature and her beauty, she should be cherished and pampered by men. How could she do these things? Why should she suffer like this?

But for Xue Lingfeng, for the future, and for her sister, she hardened her heart, took the spoon from Mo Lan, put the spoon into the wooden bucket, covered her mouth with one hand, and scooped up the contents of the bucket with the other.

She scooped up a little, suppressing her nausea, and picked up the spoon to pour it over the vegetables.

Mo Lan noticed that Xue Man'er's hands were trembling, and she herself was trembling, probably because she was unwilling to endure these things.

“Miss Xue,” Mo Lan suddenly called out, then added, “What you did was wrong.”

Xue Man'er's hands were already trembling, and she was even more startled when Mo Lan called her. She lost her balance and the spoon in her hand fell to the ground, landing on the hem of her skirt and splashing onto her skirt.

"Ah!" Xue Man'er screamed, shook her skirt a few times, and jumped up repeatedly.

Mo Lan couldn't help but laugh inside, but said aloud, "It's nothing, it's nothing, it's just a little bit of poop and pee. It'll be clean after a wash and won't smell anymore."

Mo Lan's words only made Xue Man'er more unbearable. Her head maid hurriedly took a handkerchief to wipe her skirt, but it wasn't clean at all. Xue Man'er simply couldn't stand it. She glared at Mo Lan, gave Madam Xue a forced bow, said goodbye, and left in a hurry. No matter how Mo Lan called her, she didn't turn around.

Seeing her walking so fast, as if someone was chasing her, everyone laughed.

"You silly girl, no wonder your mother always says you're so cunning. You've got enough of that. She's probably going to be disgusted by this. I don't think she'll be eating today," Madam Xue said to Mo Lan.

"It's her own fault for coveting my husband. I don't think she'll give up so easily, but it's alright, I have a backup plan." Mo Lan said in a sinister tone, then instructed Granny Bai to close the wooden bucket. Let someone else do the task of watering the vegetables and fertilizing them.

At noon, Mo Lan sent someone to invite Xue Man'er to lunch, but the old woman who sent her returned and said that Miss Xue was not feeling well and was resting in bed, so she would not be coming to eat.

Mo Lan sent someone to bring her food again. The food consisted of cornbread, green and yellow vegetables, and a soup. However, she guessed that Xue Man'er would not only not eat it, but would probably vomit even more and feel even worse.

That evening, Mo Lan sent someone to invite Xue Man'er again, but she still didn't come, claiming that she was feeling unwell.

While Mo Lan and Xue Lingfeng were resting, Granny Bai told Mo Lan that Xue Man'er had vomited twice in the courtyard that day, and hadn't eaten or drunk anything at noon or in the evening. She was probably not feeling well.

That night, Mo Lan and Xue Lingfeng didn't do much, because Mo Lan was afraid that Xue Man'er would have the energy to follow her the next day, and if she used up her energy at night, she wouldn't have time to lead Xue Man'er in any fun during the day.

The next day, Mo Lan and Xue Lingfeng took the children to host a dinner for Madam Xue. To their surprise, they saw Xue Man'er in the room. Apart from being a little pale, she looked no different from usual. Mo Lan grinned and smiled slightly. Just as she had expected, her recovery ability was really good.
