Crossing Over to Yamada Love

Chapter 41 Let's Fall Together

“Young master, you’ve gone too far. We’re from the same village, and you’re the son of a scholar. I can’t afford to offend you. So, if you want to stand here and talk to me, I have no choice. You can’t blame me.” Mo Lan responded innocently. This little boy was actually trying to pin a huge accusation on her. Little did he know that the soul inside her body belonged to another time and space. Let alone chatting with a boy, things a hundred times worse than this in that time and space wouldn’t be a problem for her.

Cheng Xiao was both amused and exasperated by her answer. Why was she blaming him, saying that he was the son of a scholar and could not be offended? He thought she was very bold and didn't seem afraid at all.

Cheng Xiao stopped reading and walked step by step from under the tree towards them. Mo Lan ignored him and continued digging for her dandelions.

"Why do you insist on digging up the roots? It's not only a waste of effort, but also useless. Besides, why are you digging this? Don't you have enough to eat at home? Do you need wild vegetables to fill your stomach?" Cheng Xiao looked at the girl in front of him who was earnestly digging wild vegetables and was somewhat puzzled by her actions.

“If I’m going to dig up the roots, there must be a use for them. Besides, Young Master Cheng is born into wealth and privilege, how could he know the suffering of us poor people? We don’t even have time to eat, let alone wild vegetables, let alone grass.” Mo Lan pouted and retorted to Cheng Xiao.

Cheng Xiao wasn't annoyed by her words; instead, he found them amusing. No one in the village had ever spoken to him like that before. Everyone usually called him "Young Master" when they saw him, afraid of offending him. How could they dare to speak to him like that?

“It’s my fault. I didn’t know your family was poor. You’re from the Mo family, right? How about I have someone send you some food later?” Cheng Xiao asked Mo Lan tentatively.

“There’s no need to trouble Young Master Cheng. We can’t accept food without having done something right. Also, I’d like to ask you, how old is this Mo Quan you mentioned?” Mo Lan raised an eyebrow and glanced at him. However, there was no mockery in her eyes. She didn’t harbor any resentment towards the rich, nor would she misinterpret the good intentions of a young boy.

"How old is he? I think he's over 50. Why are you asking?" Cheng Xiao frowned and pondered, for he really didn't know Mo Quan's exact age.

"May I ask how old you are this year, young master?" Mo Lan followed up with another question.

"I'm 14 this year, so what are you thinking, young lady?" Cheng Xiao teased Mo Lan with a playful smile in his eyes.

"What kind of thoughts could I possibly have? You're just a child to me, and I don't want an old cow eating young grass," Mo Lan muttered to herself, but asked with a serious expression, "Young master is 14 this year, while the Mo Quan you mentioned is already over 50. Don't you think it's a bit inappropriate for you to call me by my name directly? Shouldn't you add a title?"

Cheng Xiao was stunned by her words. Was this girl asking his age so that he would respect her grandfather?

He raised an eyebrow and said, "I am the son of a scholar who passed the imperial examination. Everyone should address me respectfully. There is nothing wrong with calling me by my name." Clearly, he was not convinced by Mo Lan's words.

“Yes, you are the son of a scholar who passed the imperial examination. It is right for us to respect a scholar who passed the imperial examination, but why should we respect you? Do you even have any official rank?” Mo Lan said, looking at him seriously. But inwardly, she couldn’t help but chuckle.

"This, this..." Cheng Xiao didn't know how to respond. He lowered his head, pondering Mo Lan's words. Yes, his father was a scholar who had passed the imperial examinations and was respected by everyone. But what about himself? He had no official rank or title. What did he have that was worthy of respect? But these words were different from what others had told him before. People always told him that he was of noble status and deserved preferential treatment. He had always thought that was true, but after what this little girl said today, he really didn't have anything to be proud of or boast about.

Cheng Xiao slowly raised his head and looked at Mo Lan with a somewhat eager expression. He really didn't expect that a girl who was only about 10 years old would have such thoughts and insights. He admired her very much.

But when he saw Mo Lan's current appearance, his admiration vanished instantly, and he grinned.

At that moment, Mo Lan was looking down, her little bottom sticking out, vigorously scraping mud off dandelions, her face covered in mud. Judging from her flushed face, she must have been using all her strength. Clearly a wild child! Cheng Xiao found it amusing.

Mo Lan had completely forgotten about Cheng Xiao's existence; all she could see was this huge dandelion. It was so difficult to pull out; its roots must be large and old enough to have the strongest medicinal properties. "Push, push, and push some more! I must pull it out!" Mo Lan encouraged herself.

With a thud, the rhizome was pulled out, and our little Cymbidium orchid's cute little bottom touched the ground.

"Haha." A loud laugh rang in her ears. Mo Lan didn't need to look up to know who it was. She glanced at the person's wide-open grin and cursed inwardly, "Laugh all you want, laugh until your jaw dislocates. Let's see if you can still laugh at me then."

Mo Lan rolled her eyes and decided to sit on the ground instead of getting up. Her bottom was already sore and she was covered in dirt, so there was no rush. Her eyes began to blink, and tears welled up in her eyes. She gently bit her lip with her pearly white teeth, trying hard not to cry, but her appearance was even more heartbreaking than if she had cried.

"Hey, don't be sad. I didn't mean to laugh at you. I... I just couldn't help it." Cheng Xiao looked at the little girl in front of him, his heart filled with pity and his face showing guilt. He secretly blamed himself. She had fallen, and it must have hurt a lot. How could he have laughed? She was so young; she must be in a lot of pain.

Mo Lan put her legs together, rested her head on her knees, lowered her eyelids, and neither looked at him nor spoke.

"Hey, um, don't be like that. Can you say something? Or should I help you up?" Cheng Xiao was a little at a loss. He didn't know how to comfort this pitiful little girl in front of him.

Mo Lan slightly raised her eyes, glanced at the other person's anxious expression, and then at the hand he extended in front of her.

"I... I don't have the strength. You can't lift me up with one hand," Mo Lan said softly.

"Who said that? You're so thin, how could I not be able to lift you? I'm very strong. Try it if you don't believe me." Cheng Xiao breathed a sigh of relief. She was finally willing to talk seriously. He was very afraid of girls crying. Then he looked at the thin girl again. He was a little unconvinced by her doubt that he could lift her.

Mo Lan ignored him, lowered her head again, and remained silent.

"Okay, okay. I'll hold your hand with both hands, alright?" Cheng Xiao muttered as he looked at her, then bent down and stretched out his hands in front of Mo Lan.

Mo Lan glanced at his posture, then placed her small hand in his and pulled it tightly. She had to admit, his hand was quite beautiful. Long, slender fingers and fair skin. It felt surprisingly soft, unlike someone who hadn't done rough work.

She thought to herself, but then concentrated all her strength and suddenly pulled, dragging Cheng Xiao, who was bending down to pull her, towards her. Cheng Xiao couldn't stop himself and his body pressed against Mo Lan. Mo Lan dodged to the side, and the two fell to the ground together. However, Mo Lan landed on her back, while Cheng Xiao landed face down.

"Haha," Mo Lan laughed heartily, not feeling any pain at all. She stood up, rubbed her little bottom, and then said smugly, "Serves you right for laughing at me. Now you've fallen down with me. Whether it hurts or not, you're covered in dirt. Young master, you'd better enjoy it."

"You!" Cheng Xiao, sprawled on the ground, was furious. He had only tried to help her up, and she had sabotaged him by making him fall. Really… Cheng Xiao wanted to lash out, but when he looked at Mo Lan's smug, beaming face, he froze. Her smile was like a blooming flower, beautiful and dazzling. Her triumphant gesture was completely natural. Seeing all this, his anger vanished instantly. In its place, that smiling face was imprinted on his heart, etched into its deepest recesses…
