Crossing Over to Yamada Love
Chapter 371 Snakebite
Mo Lan smiled upon hearing Xia Yu's words. Her new sister-in-law was truly remarkable; she knew how to handle people. Mo Lan didn't care whether she was clever or foolish, as long as she was of one mind with the Mo family and could uphold the family's values, that was good enough.
The breakfast prepared by Chen Hongjuan was not very lavish, but it was still quite good. The Mo family did not have the habit of extravagance and waste, so everyone praised the food she prepared.
Erlang was even more satisfied, his eyes constantly darting towards Chen Hongjuan, making Chen Hongjuan keep her head down and not dare to look up.
Everyone couldn't help but smile at the young couple's appearance. They were such a good couple, and the wife was so virtuous. What more could the Mo family ask for?
Before they knew it, it was the third day after the wedding. The Mo family had prepared many gifts for the bride, and Erlang led his new bride back to her uncle's house.
Erlang and Chen Hongjuan didn't return until dark. Erlang was slightly tipsy, having drunk quite a bit. He said he had drunk a few extra cups with his uncle because he was happy, and his uncle praised him highly, hoping they could live a good life together. When you're happy, you talk a lot and drink a lot, chatting until so late before returning home.
This three-day homecoming was completely different from the last one. Last time, he was filled with anger, while this time he was filled with wine. However, even though he ate too much, Erlang was still happy. Since he was happy, that night was bound to be extremely intimate.
Several days have passed in the blink of an eye, and life in the Mo family has returned to normal. Although Chen Hongjuan is a new bride, she is not lazy. In addition to helping Qiu Shi in the kitchen, she is also observing everything in the Mo family. From now on, she will be in charge of this family, and she needs to learn how to manage it.
Seeing that her daughter-in-law was diligent and open-minded, Qiu told her most of the things about the Mo family, including what she needed to do and what kind of people she knew.
Chen Hongjuan picked it up quickly and figured it out in just a few days, which helped Qiu a lot. Qiu was no longer as tired as before and kept saying that she had married a good wife, making her life much easier.
Chen Hongjuan has set off, and Mo Lan's wedding date is approaching. In ten days, it will be her wedding day. Mo Lan finds herself starting to panic as the date draws closer.
Xue Lingfeng was busy, and because they were getting married soon, he couldn't come to see her recently. She didn't know why, but she was actually a little scared.
Mo Lan smiled helplessly. She had never felt this way in her past life, nor had she ever felt this way. What was wrong with her?
Mo Lan felt she couldn't sit still any longer; her mind was in turmoil. After thinking for a while, she decided to go out and walk around the mountains to calm herself down.
Mo Lan didn't let the maids and servants follow her; they were all preparing their dowries. She was just taking a walk to clear her head. Anyway, she knew the mountain very well, so nothing bad would happen.
As she walked, she looked around. Most of the crops on both sides were tall corn seedlings, and there were also beans. The green plants looked very pleasing.
Upon reaching the mountains, Mo Lan took two deep breaths; the air here was so fresh. A gentle breeze was blowing, and she felt completely at ease.
Mo Lan stood at the foot of the mountain for a while. She did not go up the mountain. There were still some wild vegetables on the mountain, and many people went up to pick them. After all, as long as they picked them and sold them to the Mo family, they could get money. Diligent people would not miss such an opportunity.
Mo Lan sat at the foot of the mountain, occasionally greeting people she knew from the village. She gazed at the mountain quietly, her thoughts drifting far away.
After some time had passed, Mo Lan stretched her aching neck and back, preparing to stand up and go home.
Then she saw people running down the mountain at a fast speed. She wondered what had happened.
When the man arrived, Mo Lan looked him over. He was a man in his thirties, dressed in peasant clothes. She didn't recognize him; he didn't seem to be from their village.
Mo Lan saw that it was a man, and since she didn't recognize him, she didn't intend to pay him any attention. She stepped aside, planning to let him go down the mountain first, while she strolled leisurely behind him.
The man ran very fast. He passed Mo Lan, but then he stopped and turned back. When he reached Mo Lan, he asked urgently, "Girl, may I ask you, are you from Liu Village?"
Mo Lan didn't speak, but nodded.
"Then do you know where the doctor in your village lives? Is he ever home?" the man continued.
Mo Lan was taken aback and asked the doctor, "Is someone on the mountain sick?" However, she didn't think much of it and replied, "Uncle, I know, but I walk slowly and can't guide you. It's hard to explain clearly. Just ask anyone in our village. I reckon Doctor Chen should be home."
The man, upon hearing this, agreed and quickly thanked Mo Lan before running forward.
Mo Lan didn't care. Even if someone on the mountain was really sick, there was nothing she could do. She wasn't a doctor and couldn't cure illnesses.
She hadn't walked very far when she heard footsteps behind her again.
Mo Lan didn't turn around and just kept walking. After a while, the person behind her caught up and passed by Mo Lan. It was a man carrying a woman on his back.
After walking only a few steps past Mo Lan, the man could no longer walk. He put the woman on his back down by the roadside and sat on the ground, panting heavily.
Out of curiosity, Mo Lan glanced at the woman on the ground. The woman was in her thirties and, judging from her clothes, was probably from a poor family. Her eyes were closed, her face was a little pale, and her lips were a little purple. Judging from her appearance, she was either having a heart attack or had been bitten by a poisonous insect.
No wonder the man went to see the doctor earlier. He saw that the woman was quite seriously ill. However, none of them recognized each other, so they were obviously not from their village. They were from another village who had come up the mountain to pick vegetables.
"Uncle, what's wrong with this lady?" Mo Lan asked curiously.
"Girl, she was bitten by a tussock moth," the man replied to Mo Lan's question while panting.
Mo Lan was secretly shocked to learn that she had been bitten by a snake. She knew there were snakes on the mountain, usually of two types: black tussock snakes and spotted snakes.
Neither of these snakes is particularly venomous, but they are still venomous snakes. Who would willingly get bitten and suffer, and possibly even lose their life?
"Did you poison this woman?" Mo Lan asked the man.
“I didn’t release her, my daughter. You don’t know, we’re from the same village, but we’re not family. She’s a widow, raising her daughter alone. Life is hard for her, so she thought she’d come up the mountain to pick some wild vegetables to earn some money to help out. Who would have thought she’d get bitten by a snake at such an inopportune moment?”
If I let her take drugs, things will get complicated because of the difference between men and women. If my wife finds out, she'll make a huge fuss about it. Even though I want to save her, I can't risk my own life.
"Don't worry, daughter, someone has already gone to fetch a doctor. Whether she can be saved in time depends on her fate. It's just a pity for her five-year-old child." The man finished speaking and sighed helplessly.
Mo Lan didn't say anything after hearing this. The man's words were reasonable. They were from the same village, and it was only natural to lend a hand. Someone went to fetch a doctor, and the man even carried her down the mountain. He had already done his duty. It wouldn't be right to make her take drugs again. Besides, he had made it clear that he didn't want his wife to talk about it.
"Uncle, where did the snake bite you?" Mo Lan stepped forward to look for the wound. If she hadn't seen it before, she wouldn't have said anything, but now that she did, she had to lend a hand. Whether or not the person could be saved was up to fate.
"Legs, calves," the man hurriedly replied, seeing that the girl was about to help suck out the drugs, which was a matter of saving lives.
Mo Lan rolled up the woman's trouser leg, revealing two dark purple teeth marks on her calf, indicating that she had indeed been bitten by a snake.
Quite some time has passed, and the poison must have spread considerably. Fortunately, the toxicity was too potent, otherwise she would probably be dead by now.
Mo Lan took out a handkerchief and tightly bound the woman's thighs, then took out a dagger from her bosom.
The man was taken aback. Why was this girl carrying a weapon with her? What was she trying to protect herself from?
Mo Lan drew her dagger, then picked a few dandelions from the roadside, chewed them, and rubbed them on the tip of the blade. She couldn't disinfect it, so this was the only way.
She glanced at the man and said, "Uncle, I want to cut open this aunt's wound to let the poisoned blood out, but she's unconscious right now, so I can't ask her opinion. What do you think, uncle?"
Mo Lan was afraid that people would hold her accountable later, so she asked beforehand.
The man looked at Mo Lan, then at the woman, and suddenly nodded.
Seeing that he had given permission, Mo Lan took a knife and cut open the woman's wound, and black blood spurted out.
After the bleeding had stopped for a while, Mo Lan took a handkerchief and wiped the dark blood off her leg. Then she squeezed out the blood forcefully until it turned red before she stopped.
She chewed up some dandelion, applied it to the wound, and then bandaged it with a handkerchief.
"Uncle, please look after Auntie. I don't know how to do anything else, this is all I can do." Mo Lan stood up, wiped the dagger clean, and spoke to the man.
"Thank you, daughter. You're so kind," the man said to Mo Lan.
Mo Lan smiled, then got up and walked up the mountain.
"Girl, you're going the wrong way. That's the path up the mountain," the man hurriedly reminded Mo Lan.
"Thank you, Uncle. I know. I just wanted to go for a walk up the mountain," Mo Lan replied and hurried away.
"This girl looks strangely pretty, but she's such a daring fool. That's why she got bitten by a snake. She dared to go up the mountain alone. She's really brave and doesn't care about her life." The man muttered to himself as he watched Mo Lan go up the mountain by herself.
Actually, Mo Lan went up the mountain for the woman. She heard that the woman had a five-year-old girl and felt sorry for her. The child had lost her father, and it would be too pitiful if she lost her mother as well.
Her mind raced, trying to recall any treatment for snake venom. Serum was out of the question; only herbs remained. But what herbs? Mo Lan pondered for a long time before finally coming up with an answer.
She remembered that in that life, because her parents-in-law liked to go into the mountains, where there were snakes, her father-in-law would buy some snake repellent as a precaution.
When he brought the items up the mountain, he took them out with great joy, feeling that he had accomplished something big. But when they saw what they were, they were all dumbfounded.
Everyone assumed he bought realgar, since realgar is said to repel snakes. But her father-in-law bought sulfur instead.
The difference of just one word makes a huge difference; sulfur and realgar have completely different effects and are not the same thing at all.
