Crossing Over to Yamada Love

Chapter 34 Comforting Qiu

They have the nerve to say that all the money is spent by the eldest son's family, and that they're the ones supporting the household, without feeling guilty at all! After thinking to herself, Wang smiled and said, "You two, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, are really on the same page, even going back to your parents' homes together. How much do you want this time?" But her smile was full of sarcasm.

"Hey, what can we do? We have our parents' home to go back to. We don't want to, but we have no choice. If we don't go back, people will say we're unfilial," Madam Feng said with a fake smile, looking quite smug.

“That’s right, Aunt, just give my mother and me two taels of silver each. We won’t mind.” Cui Shi also chimed in with a smile, stating the amount of silver.

You bastard, you don't think it's too little? Two taels each, that's four taels. That's all the silver left in total, and you've taken it all, and you still think it's too little! Mo Lan was indignant.

“Hehe, I, this old woman, have no family to return to, but my two wives didn’t just fall from the sky, they also have families to return to, right? Then they can all go back!” Just then, Liu and Qiu came in.

"Eldest son's wife, second son's wife, you two should go back to your parents' home tomorrow. It's been so long since you've been back," Wang called out to the two of them, looking up at them.

"Mother, I think I'd better not," Liu said, looking troubled.

"Mother, my sister-in-law and I have both gone back to our parents' home. What are we going to do with everything at home?" Qiu asked, frowning. Although she really wanted to go back to her parents' home, she couldn't just leave everything at home to her mother-in-law alone.

“Even so, sister-in-law, you can’t be this caring towards your wife. Now that we’re all gone, who’s going to manage things at home?” Feng said, pouting, expressing her dissatisfaction with Wang’s decision.

"Aunt, you must be joking. Besides, doesn't my sister-in-law dislike going back to her parents' home? Second sister-in-law, it's fine if you don't go back to your parents' home either." Cui scoffed, expressing her disdain.

“What’s wrong with my maternal family? They’re just a little poor, aren’t they? Aren’t the social classes supposed to be scholars, farmers, artisans, and merchants? Their status is much higher than that of merchants.” Mo Lan retorted loudly when she saw Qiu’s flushed face.

“What does this little girl know? So what if she’s a merchant? Money can buy anything.” Cui Shi stood up from the kang (a heated brick bed) and yelled at Mo Lan, as if a cat whose tail had been stepped on.

"What are you shouting for? This old woman isn't deaf. There are elders here, what are you shouting for!" Wang frowned at Cui, her face darkening.

Mo Quan and Mo Jin, who were smoking nearby, also glared at Cui Shi with sullen faces.

“Aunt, you must discipline Lan’er! Look at what she’s saying!” Cui Shi didn’t think she was wrong; instead, she complained.

"What did Lan girl say wrong? Everyone knows the status of merchants. Don't talk nonsense and corrupt the child. I'm not finished with you." Madam Wang glanced at her and then scolded her sternly.

"Aunt, you, you also..." Cui's chest heaved, but she couldn't utter a word.

"Alright, it's settled then. You will all go back to your parents' homes tomorrow, and each of you will receive one tael of silver, without favoritism." Madam Wang glanced at everyone slowly before making the decision.

“What? One tael each? My father is a scholar. How can you generalize like that! Besides, I'm an elder, so I should get more.” Madam Feng disagreed with Madam Wang's decision and retorted.

“The eldest daughter’s family is quite wealthy; her ancestors were officials, so shouldn’t we give her more?” Wang Shi couldn’t stand Feng Shi always bringing up the scholar. She gave her a cold look, shutting her down.

"Hmm, no wonder my aunt is so gentle and sensible. It turns out her ancestors were officials. But why did she marry my uncle? And why is she unwilling to go back to her parents' home?" Mo Lan pondered to herself.

"It's been so many generations, why keep bringing it up? One tael is fine. Sister-in-law, just give me the money now. It'll save you from troubling me tomorrow." Feng Shi, rendered speechless by Wang Shi's words, stopped insisting on the amount of money; getting the money in her hands was the most important thing.

Wang was also efficient; without saying a word, she directly distributed the silver to the four people. With the money gone, everyone was at peace, and she had no worries.

After chatting for a while, the people from the second branch of the family dispersed.

"Mother, you should keep this silver. I... I won't go back to my parents' home." Liu bowed her head and came to Wang, putting down the one tael of silver.

“Silly daughter-in-law, take it. If you don’t take it, your second aunt and the others might find an excuse to leave again in a few days. Go back and see them. Don’t take what your sister says to heart. As long as your in-laws treat you well, that’s all that matters.” Wang comforted Liu with a kind expression.

“Then I’ll accept it. But we’ll all be leaving tomorrow, and Mother will be all alone at home. How will she manage?” Liu’s eyes reddened as she listened to her mother-in-law’s words. Although she had decided to go back to her parents’ home tomorrow, she was clearly worried about her family.

"That's right, Mother. Let my sister-in-law go back tomorrow first, and I'll go back the day after tomorrow. We'll stagger our dates and leave someone to help you." Qiu was also worried. After hearing Liu's words, she quickly expressed her own idea.

"No need. You should go back too. If you don't go back tomorrow, who knows if that tael of silver will belong to the Feng or Cui family tomorrow night." Madam Wang firmly rejected her daughter-in-law's opinion.

"Grandma, I won't go to Grandma's house with Mom tomorrow. I'll stay home and help you with some chores. I'll go next time." Mo Lan made her decision. Although she really wanted to visit her maternal grandmother, she couldn't leave her grandmother alone at home. So she decided to go next time. There would be plenty of opportunities in the future anyway.

"Lanlan and I will stay. I can help with cooking and feeding the chickens," Mo Mei, who had been silent all along, finally spoke up, her face slightly flushed.

"Mother, let the two girls stay. We're really worried about them." After listening to the two children, Qiu tried to persuade Wang.

"Alright, you're all good children. Mei and Lan can stay." Madam Wang smiled happily at the children. She understood their filial piety!

"I'm not going either. I'll stay home and help out." Erlang, who had been sitting on the kang listening to everyone talk, now gave his opinion with a serious expression.

"Then why doesn't Xiao San'er stay home with her brother and sister?" Xiao San'er leaned against Mo Lan, blinking her big eyes, and said she wanted to stay as well.

“You children are all very sensible, but Erlang and Xiaosan will be going to their maternal grandparents’ house tomorrow, so you don’t need to worry about things at home. If you don’t go, Grandma will be unhappy.” Wang’s eyes welled up with tears, touched by her children’s thoughtfulness.

The matter was settled, and Liu took her leave and went back to her room.

"Father, Mother Lanlan is all better now. Let her come back to our room to stay with us. I feel bad for bothering you these past few days," Qiu said somewhat apologetically, looking at Molan who was sitting next to Wang.

"Now that you mention it, I really am a little reluctant to part with Lan'er. Lan'er, are you going back with your mother or staying here with Grandma?" After hearing her daughter-in-law's words, Madam Wang smiled and then asked Mo Lan. She had gotten used to the girl sleeping next to her at night these past few days.

"Mother, my brother, sister, and Xiao San'er are staying with Father and Mother. Lanlan will stay with Grandpa and Grandma." Mo Lan looked at her mother, then at her grandmother Wang, and then smiled sweetly as she gave her answer.

Qiu gave Mo Lan a deep look, her eyes filled with hurt. This girl hadn't been very close to her since she was injured. She was her own flesh and blood, and this separation was heartbreaking for her.

"Alright then, Lanlan can stay here. We'll go back to our room now." Qiu's eyes were a little red. After saying that, she hurriedly bowed and took her leave, walking out of the room.

"Grandma, I'll take Mother there." Mo Lan said to Wang Shi, then hurriedly jumped off the kang (heated brick bed) and chased after Qiu Shi. Wang Shi looked at her, her eyes becoming deep and unfathomable.

"Mother, wait!" Mo Lan called out to Qiu Shi from behind.

Qiu turned around in surprise. She walked quickly to Mo Lan and asked, "Lan Lan, are you going back to your room to sleep?"

"Little San'er, go back to your room with your elder sister first. Shall I say a few words to Mother?" Mo Lan didn't answer her question first, but instead coaxed Little San'er, who was being led by Qiu Shi.

"Okay, Xiao San'er, go back to your room first." The little guy nodded obediently, looked at his mother and sister, and then left with Mo Mei.

"Does Mother feel bad because Lanlan and Mother aren't close anymore?" Mo Lan asked softly, holding Qiu Shi's hand and tilting her little face up.

"No, Mother. Mother just feels that Lanlan is a little different." Qiu blushed slightly; she was jealous of her mother-in-law.

“Mother, the night I hit my head, I heard Grandma crying in the middle of the night. She said it was all because she was incompetent and made the family suffer, and that the second wife made her feel heartbroken. She was very upset.” Mo Lan whispered to Qiu Shi.

"Ah, how can we blame your grandma? We had no idea she was feeling so bad, it's really..." Mrs. Qiu sighed softly after hearing her daughter's words.

“That’s right. So when I saw Grandma was so upset, I thought, Grandma doesn’t have a daughter either. Grandma is so good to us, so shouldn’t I spend more time with her?” Mo Lan whispered her thoughts to Qiu Shi.

"Mom has my brother, sister, and Xiao San'er to keep her company at night, so Lanlan should keep Grandpa and Grandma company. Isn't that also showing filial piety on behalf of Dad and Mom?"

"Mmm," Qiu replied softly.

“Mother is good to Lanlan. Mother went through a lot giving birth to Lanlan, and Lanlan is just as good to Mother. She always thinks of Mother. Not sleeping in the room at night doesn’t mean Lanlan has forgotten Mother or isn’t close to her anymore,” Mo Lan whispered to Qiu Shi, trying to comfort her. She didn’t want Qiu Shi to be sad, because if she did, it would create a rift in their relationship.

“Lanlan did the right thing. I was being petty. As long as Lanlan cares about me, it doesn’t matter where she sleeps.” Qiu felt much better after hearing Molan’s words.

"Of course Lanlan has her mother in her heart. Lanlan will be good to her mother and be filial to her for the rest of her life." Mo Lan said, but she snuggled into Qiu Shi's arms.

"You silly girl, how old are you and you're still acting like a child?" Qiu said with a laugh, but she hugged Mo Lan very tightly.

"No matter how old you are, you're still my girl. What, does Mother not like Lanlan like this?" Mo Lan hugged Qiu Shi's neck and said with a grin.

"I like it, Mother likes it." Qiu's face and heart were full of smiles. Her child hadn't become distant from her. She just wanted to be filial to her parents. With such a well-behaved and sensible child, what more could she ask for!

Not far away, Mo Changhe, Erlang, Mo Mei, Xiao San'er and others watched the mother and daughter embracing, and happy smiles appeared on their faces.
