Crossing Over to Yamada Love
Chapter 31 Explanation
Mo Lan watched her retreating figure helplessly. Was there really such a rush? Things can't just grow legs and fly away.
"Eldest sister, what's going on? Why did you buy so much stuff?" Wang asked after everyone was seated.
Mo Lan sat down next to Wang Shi on the kang (a heated brick bed). While eating steamed buns, she briefly reminded her aunt what to say when she returned.
“Father, Mother, Second Uncle, Second Aunt, it’s like this. The other day, didn’t we make a pair of embroidered shoes as Lan-ya suggested? Then today, when it was time to deliver them, Lan-ya sold the shoes to a young lady from a wealthy family. They gave us two taels of silver, and then ordered three more pairs of shoes. They gave us a total of five taels of silver, and we still need to pay three taels to deliver them.” Liu-shi was interrupted as she finished speaking.
"Five taels of silver! Quickly, let me see it. How come they've only taken three pairs of shoes? They're making so much money, why don't they make more?" Madam Feng hurriedly spoke up.
Mo Lan rolled her eyes at her. Telling someone to do more? Is that something they can decide? Think it's not enough? Then go and do it yourself!
Liu took out the silver from her bosom and presented it to Wang with both hands.
Before Wang could move, Feng had already started examining the money. She weighed the loose silver in her hand, frowned, and said, "This isn't even five taels. You didn't embezzle the eldest daughter's money, did you?"
Mo Lan scoffed, as if what they brought back had been blown in by the wind.
"Second Aunt is joking." Liu's expression was indifferent, clearly used to Feng's words.
"Why are you in such a hurry, sister-in-law? Let Changhai finish speaking." Wang glanced at Feng.
"I'm just in a hurry, so hurry up and tell us what's going on at Changhai's house," Feng said, feeling a little uncomfortable under Wang's gaze, and quickly urged Liu to speak.
"Yes, these shoes were originally a gift for Lan'er, but she sold them to Madam Fang's second daughter and made money from it. I thought Lan'er should be rewarded with some of that money."
Just as Liu was speaking, Feng interrupted, "What?! Reward her? What use is money to a little girl like her? Lan, hurry up and take out the money."
Mo Lan was speechless. Could this old woman raise her voice a little higher? "Second wife, will rice, flour, fish, and meat fall from the sky?" Mo Lan couldn't stand Feng Shi's anxious look and asked her.
"No, no, that's not true. But you guys are too wasteful. Why buy these useless things? Isn't this a waste of money?" Madam Feng said with a straight face.
What a waste of money! If you're so capable, then don't eat this at dinner time.
"Second wife, let your aunt finish speaking." Mo Lan looked at Madam Feng, secretly despising her.
"Father, Mother, Second Uncle, Second Aunt, Lanlan asked the doctor and said that you are getting old and your stomachs can't handle eating sorghum rice all the time. We younger generation didn't have the ability before, but now that Lanlan has this filial piety, we thought we'd buy some rice to show our respect. We hope you won't blame your daughter-in-law for taking it upon herself." After saying this, Liu bowed her head and knelt down.
Sigh, wives in ancient times really had no status. Even deciding to buy something on their own required apologizing. Should I never get married? She doesn't want to live like that.
“Changhai’s family, get up quickly. We elders are overjoyed that you are so filial, how could we blame you?” Wang hurriedly told Liu to get up.
Mo Quan and Quan Jin nodded in satisfaction. Their eldest daughter-in-law was making money and still caring about their health; she was truly a good person.
"And what about the noodles? There's meat and fish too." Only Madam Feng was dissatisfied and kept asking.
Liu blushed slightly, unsure of how to begin.
"The doctor said that my uncle can't eat eggs, but he needs to eat millet, wheat flour, and lean meat. These things will help him recover slowly, so I begged my aunt to buy wheat flour, millet, and meat. The pig's head is for my grandfather, second grandfather, father, and third uncle to have with their drinks. They work so hard in the fields every day, so my aunt and I discussed getting them some snacks to go with their drinks," Mo Lan explained clearly and crisply.
"Good, good, our Lan girl is so filial, she knows how to care for her grandfather." Mo Quan's beard trembled with laughter.
"Lan, well done! Second Master is really benefiting from your success this time." Mo Jin smiled and gave Mo Lan a thumbs up.
Mo Lan smiled shyly, looking at her father, grandmother, and Erlang's loving eyes, and she felt truly happy.
"What about the fish?" Feng asked, ignoring everyone else.
"The doctor said that fish soup is especially nourishing. So I asked my aunt to buy two fish, so we can eat the meat and drink the soup. Also, there are 5 catties of brown sugar, 1 catty of milk, 1 catty for my second wife, and 1 catty each for my aunt, my mother, and my third aunt. The doctor said this is especially good for the lady of the house. So I thought all the women in our family could drink some. There's one maltose candy for everyone. And one steamed bun for everyone to try. There are also two soaps, one for the eldest son's wife and one for the second son's wife." Mo Lan explained what she had bought.
“You’re so good at playing the good guy, yet you’re such a spendthrift, buying everything you want. Our eldest son is almost ready to get married, and you’ve squandered all our money. What will we use to find him a wife later? Also, your eldest son’s family has three catties of brown sugar, while our second son’s family only has two catties. That’s not fair.” Madam Feng kept finding fault.
"You'd better say less. The eldest daughter-in-law and Lan'er have thought of us in everything. How could you be left out? You're so talkative!" Mo Jin looked at Madam Feng with a stern face. He was very dissatisfied with Madam Feng. Everyone was happy, but she kept spoiling the mood.
“Did I say something wrong? Dalang is already 13 years old (by the traditional Chinese age reckoning), and he should be getting married soon. But she’s squandering all our money. What are we going to use to propose to her when the time comes?” Madam Feng glared at her and retorted.
Mo Lan pouted. "Take whatever you want. I didn't earn money so you could propose to that brat. If I wasn't afraid of the adults getting suspicious, I would have spent all five taels of silver. I included everything for your second branch just to shut you up and stop you from talking about Grandma and Liu Shi. Now it seems I can't shut you up. I won't try next time. You're all ungrateful wretches anyway."
"Second wife, if Lanlan doesn't sell these shoes, will Brother Dalang not agree to the marriage? If I had known you would be so unhappy, I would not have sold the shoes. Or should I go and get them back from Miss Fang? We shouldn't make the three pairs they ordered either." Mo Lan looked at Madam Feng with a wronged expression.
"Lan'er, don't listen to your mistress's nonsense. You did the right thing. Lan'er's shoes earned money and did a great service to the family." Mo Jin quickly comforted Mo Lan. Then he glared fiercely at Madam Feng.
"What merit did you achieve? Why are you talking about Mother again, Father?" As soon as the words were spoken, it turned out that Cui Shi had returned.
Mo Zhu and Mo Ju were following behind her, but Mo Changsheng was nowhere to be seen, so he must not have arrived yet.
"Grandma, can we have rice and meat tonight? The last time we had meat was when Mom brought it back from Grandpa's house. We haven't had it for days." Dalang ran to Madam Feng's side and asked excitedly.
"You child, what nonsense are you talking about? When did I bring meat back from your maternal grandfather's house?" Cui Shi quickly winked at Da Lang.
"Didn't you bring it back and lock the door for us last time? Oh, oh, no, I didn't. I remembered wrong." Da Lang changed his words at the last sentence, but everyone present understood.
