Crossing Over to Yamada Love

Chapter 264 The Meaning of Giving Pears

"Lanlan, Fifth Brother has already made his feelings clear, but don't be sad. I'm here. I'll accompany you to the capital. I'll take care of everything." Xue Lingyun looked at Molan with deep affection.

Seeing him like this, Mo Lan chuckled and said, "Why would I be sad? I'm too busy thanking you, Fifth Brother."

"Lanlan, are you really alright?" Xue Ling looked at Mo Lan, who was laughing so happily, with tears in his eyes. He was unsure; shouldn't this girl be angry or sad? Why couldn't he see it at all? How could she still laugh so happily?

"What could possibly happen to me?" Mo Lan asked Xue Lingyun in return.

"Don't you understand what Fifth Brother means? He sent pears. You should understand what pears represent, right? Lanlan, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have sent this on behalf of Fifth Brother and made you sad, but I can't hide Fifth Brother's meaning from you. I have to let you know what Fifth Brother is thinking. This way, you'll feel better after a while." Xue Lingyun comforted Molan.

"What?" Mo Lan smiled. Actually, she was also stunned when she first saw the pear, but she understood Xue Lingfeng. Even if he wanted to break up with her, he wouldn't do it this way. However, she was sure that the pear was indeed given by Xue Lingfeng. After thinking about it carefully, she understood.

“Look, this pear is a local specialty. It only grows in one place here, nowhere else. It’s called the Big Head Pear. It’s different from other pears. Other pears are crisp, but this one is mealy and very sweet. My grandma is getting old, and her teeth aren’t very good. This pear is perfect for her. But most families can’t get this kind of pear. I think your fifth brother specially got it for my grandma. I’m so grateful for his kindness. Why should I blame him? Why should I be sad? I’m grateful that you brought it for me.” Mo Lan explained to Xue Lingyun very clearly.

Xue Lingyun's eyes flashed. Did this girl never doubt Fifth Brother? If it were any other woman, she would probably be overthinking and secretly agonizing over receiving pears from him. But not her. No wonder Fifth Brother told her after giving her the pears that he would catch up with her after he finished his business, and when she asked him what he meant, he didn't explain, only saying that the girl would understand, and then left. He never even considered that the girl might misunderstand. It seems I've truly wasted my time playing the villain.

"Fifth Brother has urgent business to attend to and will catch up in the next day or two." After saying this, Xue Lingfeng gave Mo Lan a deep look, bowed to Madam Wang, mounted his horse, and rode ahead.

Mo Lan lowered the carriage curtain, took a pear from the basket, wiped it clean, and handed it to Wang Shi.

"Girl, didn't you think of anything else?" Madam Wang took the pear but didn't eat it; instead, she asked Mo Lan.

“Grandma, I trust him. People say that couples should trust each other. Although we are not husband and wife, we should still trust each other. Doubt is poison; it can destroy beautiful feelings. So I don’t doubt him. If feelings are lost, I can walk away, but while there are feelings, I will never doubt him.” Mo Lan smiled at her grandmother and stated her principles.

Wang nodded, put the pear in her mouth, and sure enough, it was very soft and mealy, making it easy for her to eat. She had never eaten a pear like this before.

"Girl, did you eat this in your past life?" Madam Wang asked her granddaughter.

"Yes, I've eaten them. I really like them, but these pears aren't grown anywhere else except here, so they're ridiculously expensive. The taste is pretty good. The fragrant pears are also good, though they're cheaper. But they're not in season yet; they'll be ready in October. We'll be back then, and I'll buy some for you. Those are sweet and sour and very delicious." Mo Lan wiped one clean and ate it as she spoke. It was really delicious; these pears were even better than the ones from her previous life.

“Yes, these pears are really good. We can’t eat all of them. We’re still in town. Let’s go to Xuan’er’s place and send some back to your grandfather so he can try them. It’s a pity we can’t take them to the capital. Otherwise, we could let your great-uncle try them too.” Wang Shi also ate one and thought it tasted good, which made her think of Mo Quan and the old Marquis.

“Okay, sending them back to my grandfather is fine, but these pears don’t keep well and will rot before they reach the capital. As for my great-uncle, forget about them.” Mo Lan smiled, called for the car to stop, and told the driver to tell Wang Xiang to go to Chen Xuan’s shop first.

The driver went to the front and told Wang Xiang. Wang Xiang didn't say anything, but Wang Mingyou frowned and whispered, "Meddlesome."

"Alright, let's change direction then. You lead the way," Wang Xiang said to the driver, and then, led by the driver, they went to Chen Xuan's shop.

Upon arriving at the shop, Mo Lan got off the carriage, found Chen Xuan, gave him half a basket of pears, and asked him to deliver them to her grandfather that evening. Then she got back into the carriage.

"Wasting half a day for just a few pears? That's so stingy," Wang Ming complained to Wang Xiang.

Mo Changhe listened, but he didn't answer. He frowned. This Wang Mingyou is a junior, so why is he different from Mingda?

Mo Lan heard it too, but she didn't care; she had already thought of all this. So she got into the carriage without even changing her expression.

The other carriage carried four maids and servants. One of the servants was surnamed Bai, and the other Feng; both were around forty years old. The two maids were named Chunhua and Xiayu; Chunhua was fifteen, and Xiayu was sixteen. Originally, the four had planned to split into two groups to serve Wang Shi and Molan, but the two women refused, feeling uncomfortable and finding it inconvenient to talk with them around. So they allowed the four of them to follow behind their carriage in one of the four maids' carriages.

Chunhua, who was holding up the curtain of the carriage with the four people inside, was observing Molan's every move. The steward surnamed Wang was also watching everything.

The carriage continued on its way, stopping briefly for a midday meal before finding an inn to stay overnight. Mo Lan and Wang Shi ate their meal, served by maids and servants. They didn't need any servants, but the maids said they had been sent by the Marquis to serve them, and if they weren't allowed to, they would be punished when they returned. So the two of them let them do as they pleased.

Mo Lan and Wang Shi lay on the kang (a heated brick bed), both finding it difficult to sleep. They tossed and turned until the wee hours of the morning before finally drifting off to sleep.

At dawn, someone knocked on the door. The two got up, washed up, ate something, and then got into the carriage.

Mo Lan leaned against the carriage, feeling a bit bored. It would take more than ten days to get from here to the capital. It was really too dull to keep going like this.

"Girl, take a nap. You didn't sleep well last night either." Madam Wang let her granddaughter rest her head on her lap and urged her to get some sleep.

"Okay, Grandma, take a nap too." Mo Lan leaned against her grandmother and fell asleep as the carriage swayed. Wang Shi, on the other hand, stared at the carriage curtain with a deep look in her eyes. She had overheard what Wang Ming had said yesterday. It seemed that not everyone in the Wang Mansion welcomed her. Her return home might not be as wonderful as she had imagined.

In the afternoon, Mo Lan heard the rapid sound of horses' hooves. She looked out of the carriage window and saw more than a dozen large horses approaching. The one leading them, with a cold face and a tall and straight figure, was none other than Xue Lingfeng.

Mo Lan breathed a sigh of relief. He had finally caught up, and his arrival calmed her heart. She felt at ease.

"He's here?" Mrs. Wang asked her granddaughter with a smile.

"Mm." Mo Lan nodded gently.

"You won't be worried now, will you?" Mrs. Wang teased her granddaughter.

"Grandma, you're making fun of me. I won't let you get away with this." Mo Lan snuggled against her grandmother and acted coquettishly.

"Alright, alright, I won't laugh at my Lan'er. My Lan'er has grown up." Madam Wang stroked her granddaughter's hair. Her granddaughter was all grown up and would soon be getting married.

The sound of hooves slowed down as they approached the carriage. Mo Lan lowered the curtain of the carriage window, and Xue Lingfeng was looking over. The two exchanged a glance, and Mo Lan gave Xue Lingfeng a bright smile. Xue Lingfeng's face immediately softened from its coldness. He slightly grinned, nodded to Mo Lan, and then spurred his horse forward.

The two didn't speak, but that knowing smile spoke volumes. Sometimes people are like that; they can say a thousand words and still not understand what the other is thinking, while sometimes they understand each other's feelings without saying a word. Mo Lan and Xue Lingfeng belonged to the latter category.

Throughout the journey, the Xue brothers did not speak to Mo Lan privately. Instead, they would greet Wang Shi together with Wang Xiang and Wang Ming every day and then quietly take care of everything.

The journey was tedious and boring, and Mo Lan didn't read in the carriage because the carriage was swaying and reading was bad for her eyes. Instead, she chatted quietly with Wang Shi in the carriage. Through this exchange, the two of them learned more about each other's affairs and thoughts.

They'd been traveling for twelve days, and she'd heard they'd be reaching the capital in about five more. Mo Lan stretched in the carriage and looked out. It was probably a little past 3 pm, and the weather was still quite warm. The outside world seemed desolate; she had no idea where they were, there wasn't a soul in sight. She wondered if they could find an inn by nightfall. Mo Lan kept muttering to herself.

Mo Lan lowered the curtain and was just about to speak with Madam Wang when she felt the carriage sway. She quickly steadied her grandmother. She frowned, wondering why the driver had suddenly stopped the carriage.

"Who are you? Why are you blocking our way? Do you know whose carriage this is?" a stern voice shouted from outside.

Wang and Mo Lan were both startled. What was going on?

"Who are you, you cowardly rat? Why don't you answer my questions?" Another loud shout rang out.

Someone's blocking the road? Mo Lan was stunned. Could it be? The Marquis sent twenty guards and servants, a total of thirty people. Xue Lingyun also brought a few people, and Xue Lingfeng brought more than ten, a total of more than fifty people. How dare they block the road? This is unusual.

Mo Lan lifted the curtain to look outside, but the figures in front of her were moving so fast that she couldn't see anything clearly at all.

"Young lady, you and your grandmother should stay inside the carriage. Your grandfather and the others are in the front," the driver instructed Mo Lan.

"Yes," Mo Lan replied, then shrank back into the carriage. Although someone was blocking her way, Mo Lan still took out a dagger from her bundle. This dagger, given to her by Xue Lingfeng, had first been stained with tiger blood, and she had later used it to kill someone. Afterwards, Xue Lingfeng hadn't planned to give her the dagger back, but she insisted on taking it for self-defense. Hopefully, she wouldn't need it today.
