"It doesn't hurt anymore. Come, sit down." Mo Changhai patted the kang (a heated brick bed), gesturing for the two to sit.

"Hmm." Mo Lan sat down with Xiao San'er, glanced at the book Mo Changhai had put down, and asked, "Uncle, is it tiring for you to teach my brother to read?"

"I'm not tired. Erlang is smart and learns to read quickly. If I can teach him, it will help me pass the time." Mo Changhai smiled gently, but there was a hint of bitterness in his smile.

Mo Lan understood. What grown man would want to lie at home all day, being waited on? It would be unbearable for him, both physically and mentally, in the long run.

"I'm not tired. Uncle, would you teach Lanlan to read too?" Mo Lan asked as she climbed the pole.

"Huh? Lan girl also wants to learn to read?" Mo Changhai was a little surprised. Girls are usually interested in needlework, so why does this girl want to learn to read?

"Yes, yes, Uncle, please teach me. Lanlan wants to learn." Molan nodded her head like a chick pecking at rice.

“Sure, if Lan’er wants to learn, her uncle will teach her,” Mo Changhai agreed.

"Little San'er wants to learn too," Little San'er said softly, her face flushed.

“Our little Sanlang wants to learn, Uncle will definitely teach him.” Mo Changhai looked at the little Sanlang and smiled warmly and happily.

The sound of voices rose and fell outside; the men must have been returning from the fields.

Mo Changhai stopped laughing and his face returned to normal. At this moment, Liu pushed open the door and came in, carrying a tray in her hand.

"Lan'er and Xiao San'er are keeping your uncle company." Liu smiled at the two of them, then said to Mo Changhai, "Husband, Father and the others are back. I've brought the food. You eat first, and I'll go set the table with my sister-in-law."

"Okay, you go ahead, I'll eat in a bit. You can come back and clean up after you're done." Mo Changhai told Liu to put down the tray and went out to help.

"Lalan, bring Xiao San'er out for dinner later," Liu instructed Molan as she left.

“Okay, I’ll go in a bit,” Mo Lan replied crisply.

After she finished speaking, she turned her eyes to the tray, which contained two bowls: one with sorghum rice and the other with potatoes and pickled vegetables.

Mo Lan frowned. Is this all Uncle eats? If he really has cholecystitis, how can he digest sorghum rice? Besides, potatoes are all starch; shouldn't a patient eat something soft and easy to digest?

No wonder my uncle's body is still in pain despite taking medicine. He just takes these medications, lies in bed all day, doesn't exercise, and the house isn't well-ventilated. It's no wonder he's not getting better.

"Lan, why don't you and Xiao San'er eat with your uncle?" Mo Changhai asked Mo Lan.

"No, Uncle, you eat it. Lanlan will earn money to buy you delicious food later. We won't eat sorghum rice anymore," Molan said, wrinkling her little nose.

"Hehe, our Lan'er has grown up. She knows how to care for her uncle now. It's alright, it's all the same to your uncle. Your grandparents and parents have had a hard life. Your uncle is very grateful as long as there is food to eat." Mo Changhai's words were somewhat heartbreaking.

"Then you eat, Uncle. I'll go take Xiao San'er to eat. She'll come back to learn to read with you this afternoon." Mo Lan said, pulling Xiao San'er off the kang (a heated brick bed). She didn't dare to continue speaking; she was afraid she couldn't bear the oppressive atmosphere.

"Okay, go ahead. Come back after you've rested for a while." Mo Changhai stared at his niece and nephew, lost in thought.

Mo Lan led Xiao San'er into the main house. Seeing that the meal had already been set out, she pulled Xiao San'er around and began calling out to her grandparents, second grandparents, parents, and so on. Then she sat on the kang (a heated brick bed), letting Xiao San'er sit next to her while she sat next to Wang Shi.

"Lan'er has a really sharp nose. She came right after the meal was set out. She really didn't delay things at all," Madam Feng said sarcastically to Mo Lan from the side.

“Mother is right. Some people only care about food, so they come as soon as they smell the aroma. They’re not as sensible as my eldest son and Ju’er,” Cui said, helping Feng from the side.

Oh, so you think I'm easy to bully? You say you have a keen nose and can smell fragrances? Aren't you just trying to say I have a dog's nose?

"Grandma," Mo Lan called out to Madam Wang in a clear voice.

"Hmm, what's wrong with Lan'er?" Wang asked Mo Lan.

“Didn’t Second Aunt and Third Aunt say that their backs have been hurting from being so busy these past two days, and they’ve been lying on the kang (heated brick bed) all morning and can’t get up? Why don’t you bring their food into the room? It must be so tiring for them to sit here. Can their backs take it? Lanlan is worried about them.” Mo Lan finished speaking in one breath, her brows furrowed, looking concerned.

After hearing this, Madam Feng and Madam Cui looked at their husbands' darkened faces and felt a surge of anger.

"You brat, who are you calling a limp woman who's been lying down all morning? My mother and I are busy working for this family all day long, and we don't even get any credit for it. In the end, you, a brat, still look down on us. Is this how your parents raised you?" Cui Shi snapped at Mo Lan.

"Sister-in-law, Lan'er is just concerned about you, she doesn't mean anything by it, why are you making such a fuss?" Liu couldn't stand it anymore and said.

"It's none of your business. So what if my back hurts? It's from childbirth. It's better than some people who occupy a position but don't lay eggs." Cui looked at Liu with a very contemptuous expression.

Liu's face immediately changed color, and tears welled up in her eyes, but they did not roll down.

"I don't mind my wife's behavior, so why should others interfere? If she's tired, she can go back to her room and lie down. If she wants to eat, she should keep her mouth shut. Otherwise, this old woman's eyesight isn't very good, and she might accidentally put something in the pot at the wrong time," Wang said softly.

"Aunt, you're being too cruel! We're all eating together, what could you possibly put in there?" Cui asked Wang in disbelief.

“Who knows? This old woman is getting on in years. It’s heartbreaking to see my daughter-in-law, granddaughter, and grandson being bullied. When I’m heartbroken, I do silly things. And who knows what I might do when I do that? If that happens, please forgive me. I really didn’t mean it,” Wang explained to Cui.

"Fine, I won't say anything more. Is it really necessary to use such a frightening term?" Cui muttered under her breath and then fell silent.

Mo Lan chuckled inwardly; her grandmother really was...

"Aunt, eat quickly. Don't worry, when we grow up, we will definitely take good care of Uncle and Aunt," Mo Lan comforted Liu Shi.

"Yes, Xiao San'er is just as filial to his uncle and aunt as his sister." The little guy has now become Mo Lan's little shadow.

“Yes, sister-in-law, what’s the difference between my children and yours? If they grow up and treat you and your brother badly, their father and I will not let them off the hook,” Qiu said, comforting Liu.

"Eldest daughter, come eat. I've accepted you as my daughter-in-law. Whether you have children or not, I'll always accept you." Wang's voice wasn't loud, but it was firm.

"Yes, thank you, Mother. It's my blessing to be born into this family and to have the love and care of Father and Mother. My husband and I have long treated these children as our own. I'm not sad. I'm not sad," Liu said, wiping away her tears.

“It’s just…” Cui couldn’t hold back any longer and had only uttered two words when she suddenly felt a chill. She looked up and saw Wang’s icy gaze. She immediately stopped talking.

After glancing at Cui, Wang withdrew her gaze and began serving food to the child. Aside from Cui, few others noticed the coldness in her gaze.
