Crossing Over to Yamada Love

Chapter 178 Ambiguity

Xue Lingfeng was sitting, while Mo Lan was standing. She stood very close to Xue Lingfeng.

Xue Lingfeng had no idea what the girl in front of him was up to. She was so close to him that he could smell her scent and feel her breath. What on earth was this girl up to?

Mo Lan stared intently at Xue Lingfeng with her large, watery eyes, then slowly brought her face closer to his.

As she drew closer, Xue Lingfeng's heart began to race. Could she be planning to kiss him? The thought sent a rush of heat through his body, his face burning. Would she do that? Would she? A strange sense of anticipation stirred within him.

Mo Lan brought her face close to Xue Lingfeng's, stopping abruptly. His face turned red. It was unexpected that this aloof man could be so innocent. Although he remained motionless and his expression unchanged, the flush on his face showed that his heart was not so calm. Would he guess that she was kissing him?

Mo Lan felt that there was nothing wrong with kissing him. She was not as conservative as the ancients, and the man in front of her was someone she liked. Kissing him wasn't out of the question. However, she was just teasing him now, letting him have some impulses and wild thoughts. She couldn't actually kiss him.

Just as Mo Lan's small mouth was about to land on Xue Lingfeng's lips, she quickly moved her face to the side, her mouth landing near Xue Lingfeng's ear. She whispered in Xue Lingfeng's ear, "Give me back my jade pendant."

Xue Lingfeng's heart was filled with excitement. He was really looking forward to that girl kissing him. Her lips were so close to his, so close that he could smell the warmth of her breath. If he didn't have good self-control, he really couldn't help but kiss her. He really wanted to taste the flavor of her lips and see if it was as wonderful as he imagined.

He was sweetly waiting for Mo Lan to kiss him, but this girl actually... He knew it, this girl had planned this from the beginning. She wanted to tease him. Wasn't she afraid that he wouldn't be able to control himself and actually kiss her? Or did she calculate that he wouldn't?

Xue Lingfeng tightened his grip on the teacup slightly, then relaxed it again. She's still young; he's not in a hurry. When she grows up, it won't be her teasing him anymore; he'll be the one kissing her, and then she'll see if she can run away!

"Girl, aren't you afraid of setting yourself on fire?" Xue Lingfeng's voice was slightly hoarse; he had really had an impulse just now.

"What fire? Do I have one?" Mo Lan blinked innocently at Xue Lingfeng.

"Alright, alright, when you grow up, I'll show you what you're made of! I'll show you what it means to start a fire." Xue Lingfeng was helpless against Mo Lan. This girl was pretending to be stupid with him. Once they got married, he'd see how he dealt with her. Just thinking about it made Xue Lingfeng feel a surge of hot blood rush to his head. What was wrong with him? When did he become so impulsive? This wasn't like him!

"Hmph, who's afraid of who?" Mo Lan snorted and made a face at Xue Lingfeng.

"You naughty girl. Keep being naughty." Xue Lingfeng's words were full of helplessness and doting.

"Alright, I'm not talking to you anymore. I'm going to call my mother to serve you the food." Mo Lan didn't want to stay any longer; she was afraid the atmosphere would become even more ambiguous.

Just as Mo Lan was about to turn around, Xue Lingfeng grabbed her and looked at her seriously, saying, "Girl, don't do the same thing to other men."

Looking at his expression, Mo Lan thought to herself: Is he afraid that I will treat Xue Lingyun the same way? How could that be? Although Xue Lingyun is handsome and gentle, he is not the one I like. How could I treat him like this?

"Xue Lingfeng," Mo Lan chuckled, "is that how you think of me?"

"No, Lanlan, I didn't think that way about you. I'm just... just a little scared. I have confidence in the two of us, but I don't have confidence in others. What will you do if others can't help themselves? I don't want you to suffer. I don't want that kind of scene to happen, so I said these words. Lanlan, I've made up my mind about you, and there will never be anyone else in the future. Have you made up your mind about me too?" Xue Lingfeng spoke very seriously. He didn't want to force Molan, but he was still a little worried.

"My feelings aren't just empty words, Xue Lingfeng. I like you, but that doesn't mean I'm giving in to you. We'll see how you behave in the future." Mo Lan finished speaking and hurriedly ran out. She felt her face burning; she had actually said she liked him. Now he'd be smug, wouldn't he?

Xue Lingfeng stared at the empty doorway and smiled. He knew that this girl must like him too. Today she finally said it. His heart was pounding. What a feeling! He felt full of power, as if most of his coldness had been washed away.

September has arrived in the blink of an eye. The weather is getting colder, and mushrooms are becoming less common. The only things you can find in the mountains are walnuts and mountain nuts. Because of the rain, the outer shells of the mountain nuts have all turned black, unlike when they first fell, when they were green or yellowish-green.

Now, when we pick walnuts, we don't start shelling them right away because they're too dark and wet, and it's too messy to shell them. We put them in the yard to dry for a few days before we start shelling them.

Nowadays, people in the village will remove the walnut shells before selling them to the Mo family, because the walnut shells can cure aphids, so every household keeps them to prevent their wheat from getting infested with insects the following year.

This saved the Mo family a lot of trouble. They could collect clean walnuts without peeling them, which was much easier. They only needed to wash them clean, dry them, and store them in bags. Without peeling, they didn't have to get their hands covered in black walnuts that would take days to wash off.

That afternoon, Mo Lan was drying radish greens with Qiu Shi and the others. These radish greens were to be saved to make tofu in the winter. In the past, when times were tough, every family would dry these greens. When the time came, they would add them to the tofu, and just one bowl of this vegetable would be enough for the whole family to eat for a day.

"The Mo family are all heartless and rotten bastards! They killed my brother! Folks, they're a menace! They're a scourge on our village!"

A roar came from the front yard.

Everyone frowned. What was going on? Things had only been peaceful for a few days, and now someone was causing trouble again? Someone had died, and who was trying to blame it on them?

Madam Wang's face darkened, and she led everyone towards the front yard.

The front yard was now in complete chaos.

A crowd of onlookers had gathered around, discussing the spectacle in small groups.

In the middle, two women, one young and one old, were sitting on the ground, weeping bitterly, while two burly men were fighting with Mo Changhe and others.

"My son, you've died so unjustly! How could you leave like this, leaving me, an old woman, to bury my son? How could you be so cruel? My son, how can I, an old woman, live like this? My son, please come back!" The old woman wailed, slapping her thigh. It was a heartbreaking sight.

"My husband, how could you bear to abandon us? How are we going to live? My husband, please take me with you, I don't want to live anymore!" The young woman cried bitterly.

"Stop!" Mo Quan stepped forward and shouted.

Everyone recognized the troublemakers; they were from their village.

The old woman sitting on the ground was surnamed Sun. She had married Liu Changyi from the village, but Liu Changyi had passed away several years ago. Sun was left to live with her son.

Sun had three sons and two daughters. The ones who were close to Mo Changhe were her eldest and third sons.

The person crying on the ground was her second daughter-in-law, Zhang. Judging from their tone, her second son had died, but they didn't even know how he died. Why were they coming to their house? What did their family have to do with this?

Listening to the constant chatter, Mo Lan felt that this year had been quite eventful. The people in the manor always blamed their own problems, which was a really bad habit.

“Brother Mo, Sister-in-law, you’ve come at just the right time! You have to give us an explanation. My second son is gone just like that, leaving us mother and children behind. He lost everything because of your shop. You can’t be so heartless as to abandon us!” Sun Shi rushed to Mo Quan and Wang Shi as soon as she saw the group coming out of the backyard and began to cry.

"Mother, why waste so much time arguing with them? They killed my brother, so they have to pay for his life. If they don't pay with their lives, they have to compensate us. If they don't compensate us, we'll tell the authorities to arrest their whole family." The old man of the Liu family said angrily, looking very domineering.

Liu Laosan nodded repeatedly: "That's right, Mother, don't be polite with them."

After Zhang saw the Mo family members clearly, she stopped crying, got up from the ground, rushed towards Liu, and shouted, "You killed my man! I'll fight you to the death! I'll beat you to death!"

Liu was weak, and in the eyes of outsiders, she was easier to bully than Qiu, who was fierce and would never suffer a loss in a fight. Therefore, Zhang abandoned Qiu and chose Liu to fight.

Although Liu was frail, she was very clever. When she saw the other woman rushing over, she quickly dodged and seized the opportunity to grab Zhang's hands, making her unable to move or hit herself. Liu also said, "What are you doing, sister-in-law? Speak nicely. Are you tired? Take a rest first."

Wang's face looked very unpleasant. What were they up to now?

"Changyi's family, since you've come to us for compensation, you should at least let us know what happened. You can't just expect us to hand over money without saying anything. Tell us what happened, so that your sister-in-law can hear what heinous things our family has done this time!" Wang's words were tinged with sarcasm.

Sun's face flushed slightly. Originally, she hadn't intended to come to the Mo family, feeling that her family was in the wrong. However, her son and daughter-in-law had both asked her to come, and since her second son had indeed passed away, she was heartbroken and had come along. Now that Wang had said this, she really didn't know what to say.

“Let me speak,” said the eldest son of the Liu family, a burly man with a dark face. He stepped forward and began to speak: “Your family collects walnuts from Tazi Mountain. The three of us brothers went up the mountain to get some to sell. My brother, wanting to get more walnuts for you, climbed a tree to knock them down. He fell from a pine tree and died instantly. My brother is gone just like that. Who else can we go to if not your Mo family? If you don’t give us an explanation today, we’ll smash up your shop and see how you cause trouble for others!”
