Crossing Over to Yamada Love
Chapter 11 Feng Shi disagrees with dividing the family property.
Facing the concerned looks in Wang and Qiu's eyes, Mo Lan felt a pang of heartache. Her headache wasn't from eating; it was from remembering her home in another time and space.
I wonder how her parents and husband are doing? Is there anyone there to live for her? Although her parents have three children, even if she's gone, she has a younger brother and sister to take care of her. But after all, those are her parents who gave her life, the home she's lived in for over 20 years. How can she not be heartbroken to be leaving them forever?
Although her marriage to her husband was whirlwind and lacked a strong emotional foundation, he had always treated her well, and their married life had been relatively harmonious. Now that she's transmigrated, how is he? Will someone take care of him for her?
Mo Lan felt a sharp pain in her heart. When she first learned she had transmigrated, the thought of banging her head against a wall and going back had flashed through her mind, but it quickly vanished. One reason was that she saw faces identical to those of her relatives from that era.
Secondly, it was because of her grandmother, Wang. In that time and space, she had been with her grandmother since she was a little over one year old, until her grandmother passed away when she was 15. Her biggest regret at that time was that her grandmother passed away before she grew up, leaving her unable to repay her grandmother's love.
So when she first saw the Wang family in this timeline, she was overjoyed. This was the most important reason she didn't choose to bang her head against a wall and travel back. Also, after reading so many novels, she figured that since she was already here, why would fate let her go back? Banging her head against a wall again would just be more painful. Even if there was a sliver of a chance she would travel back, what if fate inexplicably transported her to another place? Then she'd have nowhere to cry.
So, though Mo Lan felt a pang of pain in her heart, she decided to stay here peacefully. Poverty could be changed, but family ties could not. As long as her family here loved her, she would love and respect them as if they were family from another time and space!
Mo Lan shoveled a mouthful of coarse sorghum porridge into her mouth, then coughed violently. It was so hard, so rough, so painful to her throat. Mo Lan frowned. How could she eat this? She stopped Wang Shi from patting her back. She also ignored Feng Shi's comments about her being delicate. She silently observed everyone.
From Wang and Feng to Liu, Qiu, and then to Mo Mei and Mo Ju, everyone was eating potatoes, eggplants, and sorghum rice. Judging from their unperturbed expressions, they must be used to it. It's so hard and so coarse; Grandma is over 50 years old, how can her stomach handle it? How can her body get any nutrition from eating this all the time? No wonder people in ancient times didn't live long.
She glanced again at her five-year-old brother, Xiao San'er. At such a young age, he was already shoveling rice into his mouth, not spilling a single grain, indicating he was used to eating alone. Watching him swallow mouthful after mouthful of coarse sorghum rice, Mo Lan felt a sharp pain in her heart.
He's only 5 years old. There's no nutrition in this food; no wonder he's so thin. It's no wonder he won't grow well in the long run!
No! In that timeline, she hadn't grown up; her grandmother had passed away. In this timeline, she would never let her grandmother die so young. She had to make money. She had to ensure her family lived a good life! She had to make sure Xiao San'er ate rice and flour every day, and that Erlang and the others had access to education. At this moment, Mo Lan's determination to make money was unwavering.
During the meal, Mo Lan only managed to swallow a few mouthfuls before claiming she had a headache and couldn't eat anymore. Then she lay down to rest.
After everyone finished eating, the elders sat down on the kang (a heated brick bed). With their permission, Mo Changhe and Mo Changsheng also sat on stools. Liu and Qiu went to the kitchen to clean up, while Erlang, Xiao San'er, Dalang from the second branch of the family, and Mo Ju also sat on the kang, though they kept a distance from each other. This showed how distant the children from the two branches of the family were.
This is clearly going to continue the topic we discussed before dinner. What will the outcome be? Can the family be divided? Mo Lan pondered to herself.
Mo Quan took a few puffs of his pipe, which made Mo Lan frown, but he himself didn't seem to feel anything. After a while, he spoke: "Second brother, sister-in-law."
“Yes, brother, just say what you want to say. We’re listening,” Mo Jin replied hastily.
“I’ve thought about what your sister-in-law said carefully, and what she said isn’t without reason. My son Changhai’s health has been fluctuating over the years; he’s been taking medication and can’t get out of bed to help with the household. We are his parents, and we should do whatever it takes for our children. But what your sister-in-law and Changsheng’s family said is also true. You’ve been dragged down by us.” Mo Quan’s voice was somewhat low.
"Brother, please don't say that. We're all family. You took such good care of me before. Changhai is my nephew. As his uncle, isn't it only right that I do something for him? Please stop talking. If you do, I'll feel ashamed." Mo Jin was slightly agitated at this moment.
"Sigh, I appreciate your kindness. But let's divide this family." Mo Quan sighed and stated his decision.
"Brother, have you forgotten what our parents told us before they died, holding our hands and telling us to always be united and help each other in the village?" Mo Jin hurriedly stood up from the kang (a heated brick bed).
Mo Quan didn't say anything, silently smoking his pipe, clearly not intending to change his mind.
"Big Brother." Mo Jin knelt down in front of Mo Quan. "Have you forgotten our promise to never separate the family, to stay harmonious and support each other for life?"
"What are you doing? You're a man of your age, why are you still kneeling? Get up!" Mo Quan saw Mo Jin kneeling and quickly got off the kang (heated brick bed) to help him up.
"My elder brother said he wanted to split up the family because he felt I wasn't a good enough brother. I apologize." Mo Jin refused to get up.
"I'm not looking down on you..."
"Then please take back your offer to split the family, or I'll kneel here and refuse to get up." Mo Jin was very stubborn.
"Oh, what can I say to you like this? Please get up. But what about your wife and Changsheng's family... they..." Mo Quan sighed. His younger brother was truly wonderful, but his wife and niece-in-law...
“They listen to me, Changsheng’s mother, tell my elder brother if that’s true.” Mo Jin stood up, his eyes fixed on Madam Feng.
Before Madam Feng could speak, Madam Cui rushed in from outside, shouting as soon as she entered the room, "I agree to the division of the family property, and Mother-in-law agrees too. Father, just go along with Uncle's wishes. That way, everyone will be at ease."
"Chang Sheng, control your wife! She has no right to interrupt here. Tell her to go back to her room!" Mo Jin was furious. He had finally managed to dissuade his elder brother from dividing the family property, but his daughter-in-law had come out to cause trouble. He was absolutely infuriated.
"Anyway, I've already been beaten like this by the head of the family, what am I afraid of! Either you Mo family members beat me to death, or we split up the family. Heavens above, I don't want to live anymore. I bore children for someone else, and this is how I end up. Heaven is truly blind!" Cui Shi started wailing again.
Mo Lan rolled her eyes at her; her lip was swollen from being bitten, but that didn't stop her from talking. She hadn't seen her for a while and thought she was behaving herself, resting inside. Who knew she was eavesdropping outside? So be it. Mo Lan couldn't be happier that Cui Shi would cause the family to split up.
Mo Changsheng glanced at his father and wife but remained silent. Whether the family was divided or not didn't concern him much. He just wanted to know the outcome quickly so he could go back to his room and sleep. He had plans to gamble a few rounds with someone tomorrow. As for their antics, let them do what they wanted. He would just watch.
Seeing that her husband did not scold her, Cui became bolder and howled even louder.
"Alright, I'm not dead yet, what are you wailing about?" Madam Feng came out and scolded her daughter-in-law.
"Mother, quickly tell Father that we all agree to divide the family property." Seeing that her mother-in-law had spoken, Cui stopped wailing. Anyway, they had always been on the same side; her mother-in-law's intervention was more effective than her own.
"When did you start calling yourself my family? When did I ever agree to separate the family? Go away. Why are you interrupting your elders?" Madam Feng's words surprised not only the eldest branch of the family, but also the second branch.
After the initial shock, Mo Jin was overjoyed; his wife truly understood him. Although she could be a bit talkative at times, she always listened to him when it mattered. Mo Jin was very satisfied with Madam Feng at this moment.
Madam Cui stared at her mother-in-law in disbelief. Hadn't she always been dissatisfied with the eldest son's family? Hadn't she always looked down on them? How many times had she heard her viciously curse the eldest son's family? How come now, with such a good opportunity, she was refusing to divide the family property? Had she misheard?
"Mother, you..."
"Shut up. A family cannot be divided. If you say another word, get back inside." Madam Feng interrupted Madam Cui.
Madam Cui shut her swollen lips and said nothing more. She wanted to stay in this family, and she couldn't afford to offend her mother-in-law. Since her mother-in-law said not to separate the family, then so be it. It was better not to separate anyway; at least they could enjoy what was readily available. They didn't have to do anything.
“Honey, I support you. Changhai is our nephew, how could we not care? We might say a few harsh words now and then, but we're all family. I'm sure my brother and sister-in-law won't hold it against us. We'll still be family. Why be so formal?” Madam Feng said sincerely to everyone.
Mo Jin nodded, and Mo Quan also looked at Madam Feng with new respect. He never expected that his sister-in-law could be so understanding.
