Chapter 30 Following the Prescription
The ZZ City Traditional Chinese Medicine Market is one of the largest in Central China.
Xu Hao stood at the entrance of the Chinese herbal medicine market, took a deep breath, and felt the air filled with the aroma of various herbs, which smelled quite nice.
"The ingredients for the Guyuan Pill and the Qingshen Pill are nothing too rare; you should be able to find them in a regular medicinal herb market. I just wonder how much difference there is in the medicinal properties between artificially cultivated and wild ones?" Xu Hao muttered to himself as he stepped into the bustling market.
As soon as Xu Hao entered the market, he was surrounded by various vendors' cries. He carefully avoided the jostling customers and arrived at a medicinal herb shop that looked relatively large.
Xu Hao walked into the herbal medicine shop and looked around. The shop was filled with rows of medicine cabinets, the aromas of various herbs mingling together. He walked to the counter and said to the shop owner, who was arranging the herbs, "Boss, I want to buy some herbs."
Xu Hao took a neatly folded list out of his pocket and handed it to the shop owner. The shop owner was a middle-aged man in his forties with slightly graying hair and wearing reading glasses. He took the list and examined it carefully.
As the shopkeeper's gaze swept across the list, his brow furrowed. Finally, he looked up at Xu Hao with a puzzled expression: "Young man, which doctor prescribed this for you? Some of the herbs in this prescription are incompatible. You'd better go back and ask again. If someone gets sick from taking it, the responsibility will be difficult to determine!"
Xu Hao chuckled inwardly; he was an experienced traditional Chinese medicine practitioner himself and knew the properties of herbs inside and out. However, he didn't explain, only repeatedly assuring the seller that there would be no problem and that the seller wouldn't be responsible if anything went wrong.
The shop owner was still hesitant, so Xu Hao added, "Boss, is it okay if we don't issue an invoice or a delivery note?"
Hearing this, the shop owner finally nodded and turned to weigh the medicinal herbs. Xu Hao secretly breathed a sigh of relief and waited quietly.
The shop owner skillfully moved between the various medicine cabinets, taking out one medicinal herb after another. Some needed to be weighed precisely with a balance scale, while others were weighed by hand. After each herb was weighed, the shop owner would carefully wrap it up and write the name of the herb and the quantity on the package with a brush.
About twenty minutes later, all the herbs on the list were ready. The shopkeeper neatly arranged them on the counter and carefully checked them again.
Looking at these ordinary medicinal herbs, Xu Hao couldn't help but wonder: these common herbs, after being manipulated by an alchemist, could produce such miraculous effects. Could traditional Chinese medicine be connected to the game system in some way? With this question in mind, he paid, carefully packed the herbs into his backpack, and left the pharmacy.
Watching Xu Hao's departing figure, the middle-aged man muttered to himself, "Could it be some greenhorn who just found a recipe online? Make sure he doesn't make anyone sick when he gets back. Oh? This kid forgot the recipe here." With that, he folded up the prescription Xu Hao had forgotten on the counter and put it in his pocket.
As night fell, the medicinal herb market gradually quieted down. The middle-aged shop owner closed his shop but didn't rush home. He took out the folded prescription from his pocket and frowned as he looked at it again.
"This recipe just doesn't look right," he muttered to himself, then turned and walked towards the second floor of the market.
In an unassuming office on the second floor sat an elderly man with white hair. He was Su Shizhong, a well-known traditional Chinese medicine doctor in the area, and also a major shareholder in the entire market.
"Mr. Su, I apologize for disturbing you," the middle-aged shop owner said respectfully as he opened the door.
Su Shizhong looked up, smiled, and said, "You're here? Why aren't you home yet, it's so late?"
Mr. Li handed the prescription to Su Shizhong and said, "A young man came today and wanted to get these medicines. I feel something is wrong, so I'd like to ask you to take a look."
Su Shizhong took the prescription and examined it carefully. His brows furrowed more and more. "So many incompatible ingredients. It won't kill you, but you'll definitely get a serious illness."
As he looked at it, Su Shizhong suddenly seemed to realize something, slammed his hand on the table, and exclaimed, "Wait a minute! This isn't a prescription?!"
Mr. Li was startled and asked cautiously, "Mr. Su, is there a problem?"
Su Shizhong took a deep breath, calmed himself down, and said, "This isn't a medicine prescription, it's clearly a pill-refining formula! These kinds of things have all been lost to history!"
Mr. Li looked bewildered: "Alchemy? Isn't that something from mythology?"
Su Shizhong shook his head, his expression solemn: "No, alchemy was once a real art. I only heard my master mention it when I was an apprentice. It was lost for various reasons. I never expected to see it again today."
He stared into Mr. Li's eyes and asked seriously, "What did that young man look like? Do you remember him?"
Mr. Li recalled, "He was in his early twenties and quite handsome. He spoke very politely, but his eyes were very firm; he didn't seem like someone who would be easily deceived."
Su Shizhong nodded thoughtfully: "It seems this young man is no ordinary person. He managed to obtain such a lost elixir formula."
Mr. Li asked with some concern, "Mr. Su, should we call the police?"
Su Shizhong waved his hand: "No need. Although alchemy is miraculous, it is not illegal. Besides, the revival of this lost art might be a good thing."
Mr. Li looked thoughtfully at the pill formula, when suddenly a thought struck him: "Elder Su, now that we have this formula, can't we try to refine it ourselves? Besides, aren't these all common medicinal herbs?"
Su Shizhong shook his head slightly, a glint of wisdom flashing in his eyes: "No, Elder Li, you're thinking too simply. These medicinal herbs only appear ordinary on the surface. The real key lies in the refining technique or the special medicinal catalyst. That young man must have mastered some secrets we don't know."
He picked up the prescription and carefully examined every word: "Think about it, how could such an important prescription be carelessly discarded?"
Su Shizhong carefully placed the prescription into the drawer and gently locked it. His gaze deepened, as if he were looking into the distance: "This young man will definitely come again. Next time, I must keep him here no matter what!"
After agreeing, Old Li bowed respectfully to Su Shizhong and slowly left the office. Su Shizhong watched him leave until his footsteps gradually disappeared at the end of the corridor.
Silence fell over the room again. Su Shizhong took a deep breath and slowly pulled an old-fashioned flip phone from his pocket. His fingers trembled slightly, as if he hesitated to dial the number.
Finally, he made up his mind and pressed the speed dial button. The call connected quickly, and a young girl's slightly tired voice came through: "Hello, Grandpa?"
"Qing'er, it's me." Su Shizhong's voice suddenly softened. "Grandpa saw a prescription today..."
He paused for a moment, as if carefully choosing his words, "You...your illness might be completely cured."
There was a few seconds of silence on the other end of the phone, followed by rapid breathing. "Grandpa, are you serious?"
Tears welled up in Su Shizhong's eyes, and his voice trembled slightly: "Grandpa never lies to you. This time... this time Grandpa... will definitely be able to cure you!"
He gently stroked the drawer, as if it held the hope of the entire world.
