Legendary Person: I brought my skills back to reality!
Chapter 100 Ancient Memories
The book Xu Hao held in his hand was none other than the long-lost Taoist secret technique—"Spiritual Revelation."
Newer players may never have even heard of this skill.
A long time ago, around 2000, the internet was just emerging, and game cheats weren't yet rampant. Internet access was very primitive. At home, you had to connect to a modem (commonly called a "cat") via a telephone line and then dial up. The dial-up process took several minutes, during which you could hear various electronic noises coming from the phone line. Internet cafes used ISDN broadband, which was relatively faster, but still limited. Windows Me, and QQ was called OICQ. No matter how many computers were in the entire internet cafe, the combined bandwidth was less than 1 Mbps.
Opening a webpage could take several seconds or even tens of seconds, and online games were often plagued by lag and disconnections. Despite this, players back then were still incredibly enthusiastic, enjoying the novel experiences the internet offered.
Back then, surfing the internet was called "surfing," a term that's probably older than many of our friends are today.
In the early days of the internet, the game "Legend of Mir" emerged and became a groundbreaking title in the eyes of players. It is considered one of the earliest online games introduced to China, providing players with an unprecedented experience.
Back then, everyone was playing Red Alert 95 in computer labs (where you could only play online, not have internet access). The slightly better ones might play Red Alert 2, Legend of Sword and Fairy, Age of Empires, StarCraft, or something like that. Being able to play online games with people from all over the world was pure bliss!
At the time, the game world of "Legend of Mir" only had three main maps: Bichon, Mengzhong, and Snake Valley. The most powerful boss in the game was the Zuma Lord.
Back then, games didn't even have a full-screen view. When entering indoor maps, players had to hold a candle to see their surroundings in the dim light. It wasn't until soon after that a cheat called "candle-free" appeared, allowing players to see the entire map.
Despite the harsh conditions, players still immerse themselves in the world of "Legend of Mir" with great enthusiasm, enjoying the excitement and joy of each adventure.
Back then, when entering the world of "Legend of Mir," players couldn't see each other's health bars. Whether it was a character or a monster, you had no idea how much health they had left.
This uncertainty makes every battle tense and exciting, especially when facing powerful enemies, where players can only rely on experience and intuition to judge the enemy's condition.
That being said, it still significantly impacts the gaming experience.
However, there is one exception: Taoist priests.
After a Taoist reaches level 26, they can cultivate a skill called "Mind Revelation," which brings a huge advantage to the Taoist and their teammates.
When a Taoist priest decides to use "spiritual revelation," he first closes his eyes, concentrates his mind, and silently chants an incantation. As he chants, his fingers draw intricate runes in the air, which shimmer with a pale blue light.
The moment the incantation ended, the runes flew swiftly toward the target, enveloping both enemies and allies in a blue light.
If the target is an enemy, the enemy's health bar will be displayed in front of the Taoist and his teammates, clearly showing the enemy's remaining health. This allows the Taoist and his teammates to formulate more precise battle strategies, deciding whether to continue attacking or retreat temporarily.
If the target is a teammate, their health bar will also be displayed. Teammates can better understand each other's status and provide timely healing or support.
The role of mental revelation is particularly significant in intense battles. It can not only help teammates avoid unnecessary sacrifices, but also improve the combat efficiency of the entire team.
In the early stages of the game "Legend of Mir," the game environment was relatively pure, and players mainly relied on their own skills and strategies to play the game.
However, as time went on, various cheats became prevalent, altering the game's balance and experience. Some cheats could even lock the character's health and mana bars, making the character invincible in combat. These were even more sophisticated than current battle royale games, with features like displaying health bars and auto-locking being standard practice.
Back then, the game operator was called Shanda, which was considered a large company. Seeing that things weren't going well, they took drastic measures and cracked down on a large number of accounts, banning many of them.
Players were furious. It was the first time everyone had used cheats, and they found it incredibly fun! So they all quit the internet and went to play new online games like "MU Online" and "Conquer Online".
(At that time, 3D games were popular. "Miracle" was hailed as the first online 3D game in China. Its graphics were exquisite by the standards of the time, making it a major rival to "Legend".)
At that time, competition in the game market had become increasingly fierce, and the developers realized that this was not going to work! So, in subsequent game updates, they decided to retain some features that players had experienced through cheats, such as health bar display and auto-lock.
That's right. Back then, when you cast Lightning Bolt to attack monsters or other players, you had to manually move the mouse over the target's head to aim each time. This required a lot of micro-management, especially in PvP. If you could land one out of three or four lightning bolts, you were considered quite skilled.
Now, once the first lightning spell is cast, subsequent attacks will automatically hit the target, unless the opponent runs out of sight or you change your target.
As the game continues to be updated, players have gradually become accustomed to the convenient function of being able to directly see the health bars of enemies and teammates, making the Taoist's "Mind Revelation" rather awkward.
This skill was once one of the hallmarks of the Taoist class, providing the team with a significant tactical advantage. However, with the health bar display becoming a default feature in the game, this skill has become more than just useless; it's practically obsolete.
After observing this change, the game developers decided to make further adjustments to the game. In one update, they removed the "Mind Revelation" skill.
This led to the Taoist class being weakened for a period of time, with almost no one playing it. Of course, later, as players leveled up and discovered things like mythical beasts, it became surprisingly popular again.
Unexpectedly, this long-dormant skill has reappeared in Xu Hao's hands!
