Chapter 46 Could he be a thief?
Xie Mingqi held the leather-bound book in her hand, turning it over and over as she looked at it, her brows furrowed: "This must contain a lot of shady stuff, otherwise that old fox wouldn't have locked it up so securely."
Mei Yusheng pondered for a moment, then said uncertainly, "It might not be that important, otherwise he would have locked it in a safe."
"You were a spy last night?" Xie Mingqi seemed to suddenly realize something, staring at Mei Yusheng in shock. "I didn't expect you to be so bold! What if Old Yue found out you drugged him?"
“So what if I found out? I was prepared to tear him apart once I got my hands on him.” Mei Yusheng spoke toughly, but she was actually a little scared inside. “Unfortunately, the safe can’t be opened. Now all we have is evidence of his infidelity and this notebook.”
"Let's go find Attorney Qin, maybe he can help." Xie Mingqi immediately got excited, got up and ran to the bedroom to change her clothes. She was ready in less than five minutes, grabbed her bag, pulled Mei Yusheng out and got into the car.
It's a ten-minute drive to the law firm, and since they didn't have an appointment, they didn't know if Qin Zhan would be available.
"Never mind, let's go straight there. If Attorney Qin isn't here, we can either wait or go find a locksmith." Xie Mingqi was driving a bit fast.
"The lock is damaged, how can we put it back?" Mei Yusheng asked with some worry. "If he finds out, we won't be able to get the more important things in the future."
Xie Mingqi paused for a moment, then said nonchalantly, "Let's ask Attorney Qin first. He's handled countless cases and has encountered all sorts of situations. He'll definitely have a solution."
When they arrived at the front desk, they learned that Attorney Qin Zhan hadn't gone out; he was simply attending to guests.
Xie Mingqi sat on the sofa for a while, then, unable to wait any longer, took out her phone and called Qin Zhan.
Xie Mingqi quickly hung up the phone and smiled as she pulled Mei Yusheng along, saying, "Let's go, he wants us to come over."
"They're busy, wouldn't it be inappropriate for us to disturb them?" Mei Yusheng thought anxiously.
"It's alright!" Xie Mingqi continued walking. "Why wait? Since he told us to go up, it must be fine!"
Upon reaching the eleventh floor, Mei Yusheng calmed herself down in front of Qin Zhan's office. Xie Mingqi had already knocked on the door.
"Please come in!"
They pushed open the door and went in. Qin Zhan quickly came to greet them: "Teacher's wife, Aunt Mei, I'm sorry to have kept you waiting."
"We didn't make an appointment in advance," Mei Yusheng said apologetically, noticing out of the corner of her eye that a man was still sitting on the sofa. "Did we disturb your work? We can wait a little longer."
Xie Mingqi's gaze also fell on the man.
"This is my second uncle. He came to discuss something with me today. We're not in a hurry," Qin Zhan said politely, ushering them in.
Mei Yusheng felt a sharp gaze fall on her. She looked up and met the gaze of the man on the sofa. She was startled.
The man's eyes were so deep and unfathomable, yet so penetrating, that nothing and no one could escape his gaze.
He was wearing a thin, dark gray suit. He was tall, with fair skin, and his hair was parted in the middle and neatly combed back, giving him the air of a mature man.
"Hello." He smiled and nodded, his voice steady and magnetic. The three simple words carried a subtle sense of pressure.
Despite his gentle and refined demeanor, he exudes an invisible aura of power that commands respect and makes him a force to be reckoned with.
Mei Yusheng couldn't help but glance at him again, a strange sense of familiarity rising in her heart.
"You guys talk, don't worry about me." The man suddenly smiled, sat back on the sofa, and started scrolling through his phone, as if he wanted to be invisible.
But Mei Yusheng constantly felt a faint, unseen attention. She looked up to search, but found nothing, wondering if it was just her imagination.
Qin Zhan led them to the desk and brought them chairs to sit on.
Xie Mingqi first showed Qin Zhan the chat logs that Mei Yusheng had obtained last night. He frowned and looked at them for a while, then habitually pushed up his glasses: "This is very good. Together with the previous video, the evidence of infidelity is complete."
Xie Mingqi then took out the leather-bound notebook: "Can you open this?"
Mei Yusheng stared intently at Qin Zhan's expression, her eyes filled with anticipation.
Qin Zhan took it, rubbed the small lock a few times, making a slight metallic sound, and then shook his head: "I can't help it either."
Mei Yusheng and Xie Mingqi both showed expressions of disappointment.
After Qin Zhan finished speaking, he looked at the man from before. The man seemed to sense something, turned around, and looked back with a mocking glint in his eyes: "What? You remembered me because of your illegal activities?"
Mei Yusheng looked at him in astonishment, wondering to herself, "Could he possibly know how to pick locks?"
His attire was very respectable; he didn't look like a locksmith, but rather like a successful person. How could he possess such a skill that thieves are good at?
Could it be that he's not as glamorous as he appears on the surface, but actually a...
He couldn't help but feel annoyed at his own earlier kindness.
Sigh, these days, even thieves dress like big shots. The world is going to the dogs.
Mei Yusheng couldn't hide the surprise and disdain in her eyes. The man seemed to understand and gave a soft chuckle.
"Second Uncle, can you take a look?" Qin Zhan asked tentatively.
"Are you a thief?" Xie Mingqi blurted out, causing an awkward moment for everyone present. She immediately covered her mouth, her face flushed red, "I'm so sorry..."
The man's face darkened, but Qin Zhan laughed heartlessly. The usually capable lawyer now showed a touch of childlike mischief.
Mei Yusheng thought that the man would be even less likely to meddle, or that it was just a joke Qin Zhan was playing on him.
He coughed lightly, his fist to his mouth, to cover his embarrassment, and walked straight over.
His gaze swept over the small lock on the leather notebook, and he took out a wallet from his pocket, opened it, and pinched a thin wire between his fingers.
Mei Yusheng noticed that his fingers were long and slender, with distinct knuckles, and conveyed a sense of strength.
One end of a thin wire was inserted into the keyhole and poked twice. The small lock clicked open.
The man then put away the wire and sat back down on the sofa as if nothing had happened.
Mei Yusheng was completely stunned, her eyes wide with shock. It really was a well-dressed thief!
Or perhaps you were a thief in the past, but have now given up?
He's actually Qin Zhan's second uncle! That's unbelievable!
Mei Yusheng's expression did not escape Qin Zhan's eyes. He chuckled softly, "Aunt Mei, my second uncle is a genius. There is no problem he cannot solve. If there is an opportunity in the future, he will surprise you with many things."
"Uh..." Mei Yusheng realized she had misunderstood, her face flushed, and she glanced guiltily at the man. Seeing him focused on his phone, she felt even more apologetic.
"This!" Xie Mingqi barely managed to swallow the words that were about to spill out, staring at the man in astonishment. "I really didn't expect this!"
Mei Yusheng and Xie Mingqi's attention was focused on the man, and they momentarily forgot about the leather notebook.
Qin Zhan flipped through a few pages and exclaimed with delight, "There might be some secret bribery records here."
Mei Yusheng snapped out of her daze and leaned forward slightly: "Really?"
“It’s very likely, but the records are very messy and unclear. The names are all abbreviated or there’s only one surname. There should be a clearer ledger.” Qin Zhan said, his brows furrowed, as he flipped through the pages.
Mei Yusheng slumped down, feeling that all her efforts last night had been in vain.
"Don't be discouraged, the more detailed and clearer ledger is probably in the safe."
"But," Xie Mingqi said, somewhat frustrated, "the safe just won't open!"
Qin Zhan's eyes were filled with laughter, and his gaze unconsciously drifted to the man on the sofa: "You've come at the right time. My second uncle should have a solution."
The man's sharp gaze shot over: "Qin Zhan, that's enough, don't you dare drag me down with you!"
"You know how to open a safe?" Xie Mingqi's eyes suddenly lit up, her gaze shifting to the man as if she had discovered a treasure. "How much money do you need?"
The man's face darkened further. Qin Zhan, suppressing his laughter, blushed and habitually pushed up his glasses, then coughed lightly.
