Mei Yusheng turned her head and saw Mei Zichen's angry face, and breathed a sigh of relief.

"Yue Jiangting, have you no shame?" Mei Zichen angrily pointed at Yue Jiangting's nose and cursed, "If I see you near my sister again, I'll beat you so badly you can't take care of yourself! Get out!"

He spat at Yue Jiangting, then pulled Mei Yusheng back to the ward.

Yue Jiangting braced himself against the cold ground with one hand and covered his bleeding nose with the other, staring at Mei Zichen's back with a fierce glint in his eyes.

"Sis, why is that bastard Yue Jiangting here?" Mei Zichen still had anger on her face. She placed the thermos full of hot water on the bedside table and took the lunchbox from Mei Yusheng's hand. "Did he come to see Zizi?"

Mei Yusheng shook his head: "No, it seems that Han Caiyu was in a car accident and became a vegetable. She is also staying in this hospital."

"What?" Mei Zichen's eyes widened in astonishment. "A vegetable?"

"I don't know what Yue Jiangting said earlier." Mei Yusheng couldn't help but feel a little emotional. She couldn't imagine that Han Caiyu, who had always been arrogant in front of her, would be lying unconscious in a hospital bed with tubes inserted all over her body.

"He stopped you just to say this?" Mei Zichen frowned in confusion. "I always felt that old bastard Yue Jiangting had ulterior motives. Sister, you should avoid him in the future."

“Hmm,” Mei Yusheng didn’t tell him about Yue Jiangting’s crazy talk, so as not to worry him, “Are you hungry? I made your favorite braised pork ribs.”

He glanced at the sleeping Mei Zi and asked in a low voice, "How is Zi Zi?"

Mei Zichen frowned, looking worried: "It can only recover slowly. She kept complaining of pain, so we gave her another painkiller injection."

Looking at her younger brother's thin face, Mei Yusheng said with heartache, "Don't rush things. Let him recover first, and we'll think of a solution later."

Opening the lunchbox, the food was still steaming. Mei Yusheng handed him chopsticks: "Eat quickly, then go home and get some sleep. You can't keep staying up like this, your body can't take it."

"Okay," Mei Zichen agreed, wolfed down his food, and was about to leave with his lunchbox when Mei Yusheng stopped him.

"I'll wash the lunchbox, you can go back." Mei Yusheng pushed him out. "Su Wei just called me and said she'll be here soon. Talk to her and tell her not to come."

“Okay,” Mei Zichen glanced at the sleeping Mei Zi and walked out.

Mei Yusheng sat for a while, then took her lunchbox to the washroom to clean.

The sound of rushing water drowned out the footsteps of the person entering.

Mei Yu shook the water off the washed lunchboxes and stacked them together. Suddenly, she felt someone approaching from behind.

She was startled and instinctively dodged to the side, thinking that Yue Jiangting had returned. But upon closer inspection, she saw an old man dressed in tattered clothes and wearing a black baseball cap.

Thinking it was a patient's family member, Mei Yusheng was startled and hurriedly went outside.

"You—" the old man began with difficulty, his voice hoarse and aged, "Are you Meizi's aunt?"

Mei Yusheng stopped in her tracks, turning back to look at him with surprise and doubt: "Who are you?"

An awkward smile appeared on the old man's face: "I am Sun Chengzhi's father."

When he said the last two words, he showed an expression of shame and apology.

Mei Yusheng was stunned. So this was Sun Chengzhi's biological father and Han Caiyu's ex-husband.

When she first met him, she found it hard to associate the image before her with the term "second-generation official."

“I’m sorry,” Sun Yi nervously rubbed the corner of his clothes, a layer of shame spreading across his ashen face. “I… I know it’s too late to say this, but… but, I still want to say sorry to you and to Mei Zi on behalf of my son.”

As he spoke, he bent down and bowed deeply to Mei Yusheng: "It was my son's fault. He shouldn't have hit Mei Zi. He's... disgraceful!"

Mei Yusheng suddenly didn't know what to say. She had no right to accept his apology on behalf of Mei Zi and Mei Zichen, yet she couldn't bring herself to say anything harsh or heartless to such a pitiful old father.

"Please forgive him and give him another chance to atone." Sun Yi bowed deeply to Mei Yusheng again. The deep wrinkles on his face were covered with the heavy dust of time, enveloping him in a sense of sorrow and hardship.

Mei Yusheng stared at him blankly, her heart filled with pity. She couldn't tell him that his son had been brutally beaten and left in a dark corner to await trial.

Perhaps he thought Sun Chengzhi had already escaped?

Then don't tell him the truth, at least not from Mei Yusheng, so that he can keep a calm mind for the time being.

For a father, guilt and remorse are always better than heartache and despair.

Mei Yusheng nodded to him, said nothing, and turned to leave.

“Caiyu, she’s still unconscious,” Sun Yi followed closely behind. “She can’t visit Meizi. Please apologize to Meizi for me.”

He shakily pulled out his phone, his eyes pleading, and stammered, "Could you add me as a friend? I'll transfer some money to you so you can buy some nutritional supplements for Meizi."

Before Mei Yusheng could refuse, he eagerly added, "This money was given to me by Cheng Zhi!"

Mei Yusheng sighed inwardly, "No need, you keep it for yourself, Zizi doesn't need it."

After saying that, Mei Yusheng quickened her pace, almost fleeing, leaving Sun Yi alone in the dark corridor.

She feared that she would be overwhelmed by the rapidly spreading pity in her heart and do something impulsive.

"Aunt, where's my dad?" Mei Zi had already woken up, her eyes darting around looking for Mei Zichen.

“Your dad’s home. He’s been up for so many days, I told him to go home and get some sleep before coming back,” Mei Yusheng said gently, scrutinizing Mei Zi’s face. “Are you hungry? What would you like to eat?”

Disappointment flashed in Mei Zi's eyes, and she shook her head: "I'm not hungry."

After a few seconds of pause, he asked again, "When is my dad coming?"

“Let your dad rest a bit more. You don’t want him to ruin his health, right?” Mei Yusheng made Mei Zi a cup of honey water and brought it to her lips. “Here, drink some water to soothe your throat. I brought you some lean meat porridge, eat a little bit.”

Mei Yusheng knew that Mei Zi was a little afraid of her. She had been too dependent on Mei Zichen lately and wished that Mei Zichen would be by her side at all times.

“Hmm,” Mei Zi took a few sips of water and frowned.

"What's wrong? Is it hurting again?" Mei Yusheng asked worriedly.

Mei Zi didn't speak, her eyes flickered a few times, revealing a hesitant expression, as if she wanted to say something but stopped herself.

"What's wrong? What do you want?" Mei Yusheng asked, puzzled.

"Did my dad go on a date with Aunt Su Wei?" Mei Zi asked softly, her eyes darting away guiltily.

Mei Yu choked on her words. If Mei Zi weren't currently ill, she would have already slapped her hard across the face.

"Mei Zi!" Mei Yusheng glared at her sternly. "Have you forgotten everything I told you the day before yesterday? Do you want me to give you a lesson again?"

Mei Zi pouted, feeling wronged, and retorted, "I was just asking, I didn't say anything else."

Mei Yusheng poked her forehead and said angrily, "If you were my daughter, I would have beaten you to death long ago."

"I didn't see you kill Brother Xiaozhi either," Meizi retorted softly.

"You!" Mei Yusheng rubbed her forehead in anger, then her face darkened as she warned, "If you dare to say anything nonsense to Aunt Su Wei again, I'll tell your father to stop taking care of you. I mean what I say, you try me!"
