Love is a mistake that cannot be escaped

The toddler's finger twitched briefly, then fell silent.

Gu Yichen felt as if all his strength had been drained away, and he slumped weakly onto the edge of the bed.

I held his cold hand, trying to give him some warmth. "Yichen, the baby will be alright. We'll take him to the hospital now."

He shook his head, his eyes vacant. "It's too late. Du Yue has already planned everything. Even if we take him to the hospital now, we'll only fall into her trap."

And so, the three of us formed a temporary "Avengers" team and began investigating Du Yue.

Gu Yichen was tasked with gathering information about Du Yue's past and how she married into the Gu family. He wanted to prove that Du Yue's approach to the Gu family was premeditated.

Lu Mingxuan then used his network of connections to find evidence that could prove the child's identity, as well as evidence that Du Yue had abused the child.

As for me, I used my professional knowledge to analyze Du Yue's psychology and predict her next move.

Three days later, a miracle happened.

I was wiping the little one's hands with a damp towel when suddenly, her tiny fingers twitched. I was overjoyed! "Little one? Little one! Can you hear me?"

She slowly opened her eyes, looked at me in confusion, and then, as if she recognized me, the corner of her mouth twitched, as if she wanted to laugh, but the movement aggravated her wound, causing her to wince in pain.

I excitedly grasped her hand. "Don't be afraid, don't be afraid, I'm here, Brother Yichen is here too, we'll protect you."

The adorable child spoke weakly, her voice barely audible, "Yichen...brother..."

I quickly called Gu Yichen in, and when he saw the adorable baby who had just woken up, his eyes instantly welled up with tears.

The little girl told us, in fits and starts, that Du Yue wasn't really kind to her; she often abused her, didn't give her food, and forced her to do many things.

The reason she was injured was because Du Yue deliberately pushed her down the stairs.

Hearing this, Gu Yichen and I were both stunned. We never expected that a woman who looked so gentle on the outside could be so vicious on the inside.

I held the little one's hand tightly. "Don't be afraid, we'll all be your witnesses."

Gu Yichen took out his phone and recorded the child's testimony.

He knew this would be his most powerful weapon to bring down Du Yue.

He gripped his phone tightly, his eyes burning with rage. "Du Yue, what you owe me, what you owe the little one, I will make you pay for it all!"

He organized all the evidence he had collected, including Du Yue's financial transactions over the years, her contact records with unknown individuals, and Mengwa's testimony. Then he contacted several respected elders in the family and requested to hold a family meeting.

On the other end of the phone, the elders were shocked and furious after hearing Gu Yichen's account. They unanimously agreed to hold a family meeting to thoroughly investigate the matter and give Gu Yichen and the child justice.

The family meeting is scheduled for three days from now.

During these three days, Gu Yichen worked tirelessly, contacting various parties and collecting more evidence that was detrimental to Du Yue.

He became taciturn, his eyes bloodshot, and I knew how much pressure and anger he was under.

I couldn't offer much help, so I could only silently stay by his side and cheer him on.

On the day of the meeting, the Gu family's old residence was heavily guarded, and the atmosphere was solemn.

The spacious conference hall was filled with family members, each with a serious expression on their face.

Gu Yichen, dressed in a black suit with a cold expression, led the adorable child step by step to the center of the conference table.

I stood to the side, my palms sweaty.

Du Yue sat opposite Gu Yichen, her face pale and her eyes darting around, yet she still tried to appear calm.

"Yichen, what do you mean by this? Calling everyone here, are you trying to force me to abdicate?"

She launched the first attack, her tone sharp.

Gu Yichen ignored her provocation and instead placed a series of documents on the table. "Esteemed elders," he said, "these are the evidence I've collected over the past few days, sufficient to prove how Du Yue has deceived everyone and abused the children all these years."

His tone was calm, yet his words were clear and resolute. Then, he turned on his phone to record, and the child's weak voice echoed in the conference room, accusing Du Yue of her evil deeds.

Everyone present was shocked. They never expected that Du Yue, who was usually gentle and virtuous, would do such a thing.

"You're talking nonsense!"

Du Yue suddenly stood up, pointing at the adorable child, "You little bastard, you seduced Yi Chen and then slandered me!"

She screamed hysterically, trying to make a final stand.

However, it was all too late.

Gu Yichen produced more evidence, including records of Du Yue transferring assets and records of her contact with unknown individuals. This evidence showed that her approach to the Gu family and Gu Yichen was purposeful.

Faced with overwhelming evidence, Du Yue was powerless to refute it, slumped into a chair, her face ashen.

The elders of the family were ashen-faced. They never imagined that they had been deceived by this woman for so many years.

"Du Yue, considering how many years you've served the old man, we won't pursue your other crimes, but you must leave the Gu family and relinquish all your assets."

A respected elder announced the punishment for Du Yue.

Du Yue wanted to say something, but was stopped by Gu Yichen's cold gaze.

In the end, she could only leave the Gu family's old house in disgrace and disappear from our lives forever.

After Du Yue was taken away, the atmosphere in the conference hall relaxed considerably, and the elders expressed their approval and praise for Gu Yichen.

Gu Yichen regained his composure and bowed to his elders to express his gratitude for their trust and support.

I finally breathed a sigh of relief; a weight was lifted from my shoulders.

Back at the Gu family villa, Gu Yichen handed the baby over to the nanny, then pulled me into the study, closed the door, and gave me a deep look. "Fu Yan, thank you."

I know what he meant. During this time, I have been by his side, silently supporting and encouraging him, even though I can't help him much.

"We're friends, aren't we?"

I smiled and said, trying to lighten the mood.

He was silent for a moment, then walked over and gently pulled me into his arms. "Fu Yan, if possible, I hope we can be more than just friends."

His voice was deep and gentle, with a slight, almost imperceptible tremor.

I was stunned and didn't know how to react.

Just then, there was a knock on the study door, and Gu Yichen's assistant rushed in, his face grave. "Mr. Gu, something's happened!"

Gu Yichen released me, his brows furrowed. "What is it?"

"The company...the company...has been hostilely acquired!"

The assistant spoke in a flustered and halting voice.

My heart sank suddenly, and an ominous premonition surged into my mind. Was all this not over yet?
