Love is a mistake that cannot be escaped

Chapter 68 Missed Opportunity

Gu Yichen gripped the file folder tightly, his brows furrowing even more deeply.

He abruptly raised his head, looking in the direction the dark figure had disappeared, his voice trembling slightly, "Who are you? Why did you help us?"

After a moment of silence in the darkness, a slender figure slowly emerged. In the dim light, I could vaguely make out her outline, and her familiar eyebrows and eyes even bore a resemblance to Gu Yichen.

"Yichen, don't you recognize me?" The woman's voice was soft, yet it exploded in my ears like a thunderclap.

Gu Yichen's pupils contracted sharply, and he took a half-step back in disbelief. "You...you are..."

"I am your mother, my child."

The woman removed her hat and mask, and tear tracks were clearly visible in the dim light. "All these years, I've been watching you grow up. I'm so sorry I can't be there for you..."

"Why?" Gu Yichen's voice choked. He took a step forward, but then stopped in place as if he dared not touch any taboo.

"Back then, I was framed by Du Yue and had no choice but to leave you."

The woman sobbed uncontrollably, “Over the years, I have lived in regret and self-blame. I knew Du Yue would not let this go, so I secretly collected all the evidence of her crimes, just so that one day I could get justice for you.”

Gu Yichen's biological mother handed him a heavy file bag, her eyes filled with expectation and worry.

"Yichen, this contains evidence of all of Du Yue's crimes over the years. You must keep it safe and seek justice for me and your grandfather!"

Gu Yichen gripped the file bag tightly, as if he were holding onto the hopes his family had held for many years.

He took a deep breath and said firmly, "Mom, don't worry, I will definitely make sure Du Yue is punished by law!"

Looking at this scene before me, I felt a mix of emotions.

It turns out that Gu Yichen has endured so much untold suffering over the years.

I secretly vowed to help him and help him get out of the shadows of his past.

"Let's not delay, let's go to the police station now!"

Gu Yichen put the file bag into my bag, grabbed my hand, and rushed into the night.

We flagged down a taxi and headed straight for the Municipal Public Security Bureau.

However, halfway through the drive, I felt a strange unease.

The number of vehicles on the road dwindled, the dim streetlights cast our shadows long, and the surroundings were deathly silent, with only the grating sound of tires screeching against the ground.

"Master, something seems off about this road?"

I couldn't help but ask.

The driver glanced at us in the rearview mirror, his eyes darting around: "Is this your first time here? This is a shortcut, don't worry, we'll be there soon."

I wanted to say something more, but Gu Yichen grabbed my hand.

He shook his head at me, signaling me not to make any rash moves.

After driving for a while, suddenly, several black sedans appeared in front of us, completely blocking our way.

Before we could react, the car doors opened, and more than a dozen men in black got out and menacingly approached us.

"Oh no, it's Du Yue's people!" I suddenly realized that this was all a trap set by Du Yue!

Gu Yichen pulled me behind him and whispered, "Don't be afraid, I'm here."

He calmly observed his surroundings, searching for an opportunity to break through. The men in black closed in step by step, and a fierce battle was about to break out.

"Run!" Gu Yichen suddenly shouted, grabbed me, and rushed towards the woods by the roadside.

The man in black was clearly prepared and gave chase.

We ran as fast as we could, the footsteps and shouts behind us getting closer and closer.

In the chaos, I felt the strap of my bag get caught on a tree branch. Before I could react, the bag was ripped off, and its contents scattered all over the ground.

"Let's go! Don't worry about it!"

Gu Yichen urged me anxiously, pulling me to keep running forward.

I know that the file folder contains crucial evidence that could bring Du Yue to justice, but at this moment, saving my life is the priority.

We eventually escaped the men in black and hid in a 24-hour convenience store.

Still shaken, I realized that I was clutching my phone tightly in my hand, while the document bag containing the evidence had vanished.

I was suddenly filled with despair. Was all my efforts going to be in vain?

Gu Yichen pulled me into his arms and gently comforted me, but his furrowed brows betrayed his true feelings.

Just then, my phone rang; it was a video call from my son.

I hesitated for a moment, but then answered the call.

"Mom, Dad, where are you? I saw on the news that you encountered bad people, I'm so worried about you!"

The son's innocent voice was filled with worry.

I fought back my tears and tried to sound relaxed, saying, "Honey, it's okay, we're safe now, you don't need to worry..."

Before I could finish speaking, my son suddenly interrupted me: "Mom, did you lose something very important? I saw the picture on the news, is your brown bag gone?"

I looked at my son in surprise. How did he know?

"Don't worry, I've found the bag!" the son said proudly. "I'm Mom and Dad's superhero!"

"Baby, where did you find us? Are you safe now?"

I asked anxiously, my heart pounding in my throat.

My son seemed to sense my unease. He blinked and said in his childish voice, "Mommy, don't worry, I'm safe. I'm in a very secluded place now, those bad guys can't find me!" He paused, then added, "Don't worry, I'll bring the things over to you in a little while!"

Before I could ask anything else, the video call was disconnected.

I panicked immediately; my son's safety became my biggest worry.

Gu Yichen gripped my hand tightly and said in a deep voice, "Don't be afraid, we'll go find him right now!"

Based on the background in our son's video call, we could vaguely make out that it was an abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city.

Gu Yichen immediately started the car, and we sped off in that direction. All the way there, my heart felt like it was being gripped tightly by an invisible hand; my son's innocent, smiling face kept flashing through my mind, along with the dangers he might be facing.

Time was ticking away, and the deadline for submitting evidence was drawing ever closer.

My palms were sweaty, but the backs of my hands were ice cold.

Just then, my phone rang again, this time from an unfamiliar number.

"If you want your precious son to be safe and sound, bring evidence to the North City Wharf. Remember, you are the only one allowed to come, otherwise..."

The voice on the other end of the phone was chilling and piercing. Before the other person could finish speaking, I shouted, "Fine, I'll go! Just don't hurt my son!"
