Love is a mistake that cannot be escaped

Chapter 40 The Dilemma Deepens

The banquet hall door was suddenly pushed open, and a tall man in a suit walked in.

He walked straight up to Du Yue, bowed slightly, and respectfully greeted her, "Madam."

Du Yue's expression changed slightly upon seeing the person who arrived, but she quickly regained her composure. "Attorney Zhang, what brings you here?"

Attorney Zhang adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and said in a serious tone, "Madam, the late Master left a will bequeathing all his property to Mr. Gu Yichen and designated him as the sole heir of the Gu Group."

Attorney Zhang's words were like a bomb dropped on a calm lake, causing an uproar throughout the banquet hall.

Du Yue's face turned ashen. She slammed her hand on the table and roared, "Impossible! This will must be fake!"

Attorney Zhang calmly took a document from his briefcase and handed it to Du Yue. "Madam, please take a close look. This will has been notarized and is absolutely authentic and valid."

Du Yue snatched the document and read it carefully, her expression growing increasingly grim.

Gu Yichen watched all of this coldly. He knew that this war had only just begun.

For the next few days, I stayed by Gu Yichen's side almost every step of the way.

I witnessed firsthand how he calmly dealt with the doubts of his family members and how he skillfully thwarted Du Yue's schemes.

I gradually realized that Gu Yichen was not as simple as he seemed on the surface; deep inside him lay enormous energy and determination.

In order to find out the cause of my father's death, I decided to personally search for the eyewitnesses from that year.

However, it seemed that my movements were being monitored, and I encountered various accidents and dangers along the way.

Once, I was being followed in a secluded alley, but luckily Lu Mingxuan appeared in time and saved me from danger. Another time, my car was tampered with, and I almost had an accident, but Gu Yichen secretly followed me and helped me escape.

I know that Du Yue is behind all of this. She wants to prevent me from finding out the truth and also wants to take the opportunity to get rid of me, a thorn in her side.

But I will not give up. For my father and for myself, I must persevere.

Since that incident, the little girl has rarely spoken and always keeps her head down, like a child who has done something wrong.

I understood that he was blaming himself, blaming himself for not protecting me. I tried to comfort him, to tell him it wasn't his fault, but he remained silent, his clear eyes filled with sadness and self-reproach.

Gu Yichen felt extremely sorry for him. He put down his work, turned down all social engagements, and played games with the adorable child, telling him stories in the hope of cheering him up.

Just when we were racking our brains over the adorable child's situation, Lin Jiaojiao reappeared.

She visited the adorable child with carefully prepared gifts, her words filled with concern and tenderness.

I know that her real intention is not what it seems; she approached the cute child only to get closer to Gu Yichen.

"Yichen, it's been a long time. You seem to have lost weight." Lin Jiaojiao deliberately ignored my presence, staring intently at Gu Yichen, her tone tinged with a hint of coquettishness.

"I'm quite busy with company matters," Gu Yichen replied casually, his gaze never leaving the adorable child.

Lin Jiaojiao was not giving up. She walked over to the little girl and said softly, "Little girl, do you remember Auntie? Auntie bought you a lot of toys. Do you like them?"

The little girl looked up at Lin Jiaojiao, then lowered her head again without saying a word.

"Little one, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Lin Jiaojiao pretended to be very concerned and reached out to touch the little one's head.

"He's fine, no need for you to worry." Gu Yichen pulled the adorable child behind him and said coldly, "You didn't come here just to see a cute kid, did you?"

Lin Jiaojiao's face stiffened for a moment, but she quickly regained her smile. "Yichen, how could you say that? I came here to see you all, of course."

“Ms. Lin, I think you should understand that there is no longer any relationship between us.”

Gu Yichen's tone was resolute, without the slightest hesitation.

"Yichen..." Lin Jiaojiao wanted to say something more, but Gu Yichen ruthlessly interrupted her, "If you really care about the cute kids, please don't bother our lives anymore."

Lin Jiaojiao bit her lip, her eyes reddening, but in the end she said nothing, picked up her bag, and left in her high heels.

Watching her lonely figure, I felt a mix of emotions.

I know that her love for Gu Yichen is genuine, but this love is too humble and too ruthless.

The adorable child's situation and Lin Jiaojiao's appearance made the already tense atmosphere even more oppressive.

I tried to keep myself busy and not think about those troubling things.

I took on several translation projects and buried myself in my desk every day, hoping to numb myself with work.

That day, I went out to meet a client.

Just as I stepped out of the residential area, a black sedan suddenly sped out. Before I could even react, I was thrown away by a tremendous force.

In a daze, I felt a sharp pain, and heard a series of screeching brakes and gasps from the crowd.

I tried hard to open my eyes, but found my eyelids as heavy as lead.

"Call an ambulance!"

"Oh my god, the injuries are so severe, is there any hope for him?"

"This girl is so pitiful, she's so young..."

I felt someone slapping my face, someone trying to stop the bleeding, but I was too weak to respond.

My consciousness gradually faded, and finally I was plunged into darkness.

……

When I woke up again, I found myself lying in a hospital bed.

The white walls and the pungent smell of disinfectant made me realize that something really had happened to me.

"You're awake?" A familiar voice rang out. I turned my head and saw Gu Yichen sitting on the edge of the bed. His eyes were bloodshot, and he had stubble on his chin. He looked extremely haggard.

“Cute baby…” I opened my mouth, but found my voice was terribly hoarse.

"The baby is fine, he's already asleep."

Gu Yichen grasped my hand, his voice trembling as he said, "Yan Yan, you scared me to death, you know that?"

I didn't say anything, I just looked at him quietly. His eyes were full of worry and self-blame. I knew that he must have taken all the blame upon himself again.

"The doctor said you only suffered minor injuries and will recover quickly." Gu Yichen forced a smile, but I knew he was putting on a brave face.

I didn't call him out on it; I just nodded slightly.

I know that what I need to do most right now is to recover from my injury. We can talk about other things later.

The doctor's words, "Thank goodness," brought me back from the brink of death.

However, when I woke up again, my mind was blank. All those past events, all those loves and hates, seemed to have become someone else's story, and had nothing to do with me.

"Who are you?" I asked the man in front of me, my tone unfamiliar and distant.

He visibly froze, and the light in his eyes dimmed, but he quickly regained his composure and forced a smile: "I am Gu Yichen, you... don't you remember?"

I shook my head blankly, a nameless panic rising in my heart.

He held my hand, his eyes gentle yet firm: "It's okay, the doctor said it's just temporary amnesia and it will recover gradually."

I'll stay with you and help you remember.

In the days that followed, he stayed by my side every step of the way, taking care of me like a child, and patiently telling me our story.

Those once-familiar scenes now sound like fictional movie plots, completely devoid of any sense of reality.

He took me to places we used to go, to eat the foods we used to like, and even brought out many photos and told me the stories behind them.

Looking into his eyes with deep affection and listening to his gentle narration, I felt no emotion at all.

I tried hard to remember something, to be like him and find those beautiful memories again, but my mind was blank, leaving me feeling utterly powerless and desperate.

"Don't think about it. The doctor said not to put too much pressure on yourself. Take it slow." He gently stroked my hair, his tone tender and affectionate.

I nodded, said nothing more, and simply gazed out the window. I seemed to see another "me" standing in the labyrinth of memories, searching for an exit in confusion.

He, like a guardian, stood silently at the entrance of the maze, waiting for me to find our memories and return to his side.

But can I still retrieve those memories? If I do, can we go back to the way things were?
