Chapter 331 Xiao Rong Falls into the Net
After showering and changing, he came out and said to Gu Huai'an, who was waiting at the door, "A few days ago I had the chance to search Xiao Rong's office, but I didn't find anything. I suspect he wouldn't place the evidence of money laundering under such a big target as Xiao's Group; he might have moved it to some other inconspicuous place. I can't turn on the computer in his office. Do you know any computer experts who could lend me their services?"
Gu Huai'an chuckled: "No need to go through all that trouble and hire a computer expert. I'll handle the password issue."
Lu Zheng's eyes widened in surprise: "What's your plan?" In terms of skill, Gu Huai'an might be a little better than him, but when it comes to infiltrating Huayi Brothers, he is definitely more familiar with the terrain.
Gu Huai'an quickly cleared up his doubts: "We have found a capable informant to help us, so we can leave this problem to him."
Lu Zheng blinked suspiciously. Gu Huai'an was very tight-lipped and would certainly not reveal who the informant was, but judging from his expression, he was very confident in this informant.
Lu Zheng racked his brains but couldn't figure out who could get the code out of Xiao Rong. Xiao Rong was always meticulous, especially wary of others.
Within three days, Lu Zheng received an anonymous email on his phone. The email contained a small countdown timer, lasting only five seconds, after which the email vanished instantly. Lu Zheng only had time for a fleeting glance, to make out the combination of letters and numbers in the password, before it all disappeared without a trace, like alcohol evaporating into thin air.
Fortunately, they had all learned shorthand during their special forces training, so memorizing this set of codes in five seconds was not difficult for him.
However, Lu Zheng was even more curious about this informant.
It just so happened that Suwen needed to go to the company to sign a contract that afternoon, so Lu Zheng offered to take her there.
After parking the car, Su Wen was about to leave when Lu Zheng stopped her, turned his head and pointed to his cheek: "You seem to have forgotten something?"
Suwen glanced shyly at the surveillance camera above her head, quickly planted a kiss on his cheek, and said with a blush, "If you're getting impatient, go get a cup of coffee."
Lu Zheng smiled as he watched her leave. Only when the elevator doors closed did his gaze gradually turn cold, sweeping over the overhead camera with a hint of mockery.
He got out of the car, locked it, and was about to leave when a red Audi pulled into the parking lot. Xiao Yuan got out of the car, carrying her handbag, then suddenly paused, took off her sunglasses, and looked at him in surprise: "Third Brother?"
Lu Zheng returned the smile as a greeting.
"Did you come here today for something? Last time you left without saying goodbye, and I wasted my coffee. You can't stand me up again today." Xiao Yuan was very enthusiastic.
Lu Zheng waved his hand: "Next time, I have some things to do today."
Xiao Yuan pouted: "Don't worry, my brother isn't here today. How about this, you go take care of your business first, and then come to the third floor to have coffee with me when you're done."
Lu Zheng gave a perfunctory smile, parted ways with Xiao Yuan, circled back to the parking lot, and quietly slipped into the emergency staircase.
This time, he didn't take the elevator to avoid being caught on camera and leaving evidence. He went straight up the stairs to the nineteenth floor. The corridor on the nineteenth floor was very quiet. Just as Xiao Yuan had said, Xiao Rong wasn't there today.
He listened outside Xiao Rong's office door for a while to make sure no one was inside before following the same procedure to open the door. This time, his target was the computer on the desk.
He quickly turned on the computer, pulled the disk out of his pocket, and plugged it in. When the login password popped up on the screen, he entered it from memory, and sure enough, the screen changed to Xiao Rong's desktop.
Lu Zheng's fingers flew across the keyboard as he quickly searched for keywords in the document, finally locking onto an encrypted folder.
He tried the login password, but it showed an error. He hissed, annoyed at his own carelessness. How could someone as cautious as Xiao Rong only have one layer of password?
A restless atmosphere filled the closed office, and a bead of sweat slid down Lu Zheng's forehead.
Finally, clinging to his last shred of hope, he took out his phone and replied to the email from the person who sent it, asking for the password to the file.
Although he knew the chances were slim, and the other party might not even know, or might not have used his own email address for confidentiality.
Miraculously, the other party replied to him quickly, saying that he didn't know either.
Lu Zheng's renewed hope was extinguished once again, and just as he was about to give up, his phone lit up again.
The other party sent a string of numbers, saying he could give it a try.
Lu Zheng quickly typed in the number, and the file opened immediately. He glanced at it hastily and saw it contained Xiao's entire transaction history for the past year. Without thinking too much, he immediately copied the entire file to a hard drive, then shut down the computer, erasing all traces of his intrusion.
The corridor remained silent until he gently closed the door to Xiao Rong's office. He removed the jacket covering the security camera and hurriedly left via the emergency staircase.
Lu Zheng went down to the underground parking lot, then took the elevator upstairs as if nothing had happened, and sat down in the third-floor artist lounge to wait for Su Wen.
As he was sitting, Xiao Yuan came over with a cup of coffee and sat down in front of him with a smile: "Third Brother, are you done with the business?"
"Hmm." Lu Zheng nodded lightly.
"Try my coffee and see if your skills have improved?"
Xiao Yuan remembered his taste and pushed a cup of Americano in front of him. Lu Zheng picked it up and took a sip, not paying attention to the taste of the coffee. His mind was now preoccupied with the plate in his pocket and the identity of that informant.
After chatting absentmindedly with Xiao Yuan for a while, Su Wen finally finished work and returned. When she saw Xiao Yuan and Lu Zheng sitting together, she was taken aback. Lu Zheng had already stood up, walked to her side, and put his arm around her waist: "Finished work?"
"Hmm. What are you and Miss Xiao talking about?" Suwen leaned against him.
"It's nothing, just a chance encounter, we had a cup of coffee. Let's go back now." After saying that, Lu Zheng turned to say goodbye to Xiao Yuan.
Xiao Yuan smiled and waved to the two of them, then suddenly called out to Lu Zheng, "Third Brother! Do you remember that it's my birthday next month? Remember to prepare a gift then."
Lu Zheng was stunned for a moment, then felt a pang of confusion. He had never paid attention to these things before, and he certainly hadn't considered Xiao Yuan's girlish feelings. He would only instruct Feng Zhan to prepare a gift if Xiao Yuan asked him to. Although Xiao Yuan knew who had prepared the gift, she still smiled sweetly when she received it.
He nodded, put his arm around Suwen's waist, and entered the elevator. Leaning against the elevator wall, looking at his reflection, a sharp thought suddenly flashed through his mind—the password the informant had sent him to try resurfaced—
That was... Xiao Yuan's birthday?
Lu Zheng froze on the spot, even more confused.
Suwen had noticed something was off about him earlier, so she poked his arm and asked, "What's wrong?"
"...It's nothing." After a long while, he shook his head and grasped Suwen's hand tightly.
That night, after Su Wen had gone to sleep, Lu Zheng sat alone in front of the computer, carefully examining the files on the hard drive. The detailed accounts clearly recorded Xiao Rong's dealings with the underground banks, and these dealings had been going on for several years.
The more Lu Zheng read, the more alarmed he became. He couldn't believe that his brother of twenty years had been secretly helping a drug cartel launder money.
He paused his fingers on the keyboard, his thoughts seemingly frozen for a long, long time, before turning back to the informant who had provided him with the password.
Xiao Rong... Xiao Yuan... This brother and sister are becoming more and more of a mystery, shrouded in mist, and some truth is about to be revealed.
Suwen rolled over on the bed and murmured something in her sleep.
Lu Zheng suddenly snapped out of his daze, stopped thinking about anything else, and quickly sent the copied files to Gu Huai'an.
The next day, Suwen got up very early and dragged Lu Zheng to the supermarket to do a big shopping trip. Then, she put on an apron and prepared to cook for herself.
Even when Lu Zheng offered to help her, she refused. Gathering her strength, she decided to surprise him and pushed him out of the kitchen door, saying, "Go play on the computer in the bedroom. Dinner will be ready soon."
Lu Zheng lay alone on his bed in the bedroom. After thinking it over, he took out his phone and sent a message to the informant's email address: "Can I see you?"
Intelligence agents typically don't reveal their identities unless under special circumstances, especially since Lu Zheng is no longer a special forces soldier. However, he had a feeling that the other party wasn't a professional intelligence agent, but rather just a trusted confidant of Xiao Rong.
He waited a while, but his phone remained silent. Just as he was about to toss it aside, a new email arrived.
The person said: Okay, meet me in Huayi's underground parking lot in an hour.
The fact that the other party arranged to meet at Huayi Brothers made Lu Zheng even more certain that this person was someone close to Xiao Rong, or even someone he knew.
He saw Suwen's back as she busied herself in the kitchen from inside the bedroom. After a long pause, he replied with a single word: "Okay."
His long, slender fingers stroked his phone, but there was no further reply. He got up and dressed, just then his phone rang. He answered it; it was Gu Huai'an.
"The documents you sent have been verified. This morning, the police officially opened a case and made arrests. Xiao Rong has already received inside information and is withdrawing funds. I'm afraid he will abscond."
"You want me to arrest him?" Lu Zheng asked instinctively.
"No. Let him leave. Our goal is to follow the trail and break the entire drug trafficking chain behind him. Killing him outright is meaningless to me, especially since he has Commander Xiao behind him. This isn't something you can just arrest someone on a whim. In short, keep an eye on the people around him and see who he might go to."
"Understood." Lu Zheng put down the phone, his brows furrowed, and his gaze once again fell on Su Wen in the kitchen.
What would Susu think if she knew that her company boss was involved in such a massive drug trafficking operation? Never mind, she's just a naive girl; it's best not to tell her too much.
