"We met last month," she answered truthfully.

"Hmm," she nodded thoughtfully and said, "Thank you so much for bringing Lu Zheng to the hospital in time. I've already arranged for a room to be prepared for you. Go and rest now."

She stubbornly shook her head: "I want to wait for him to wake up."

Beside her, Xiao Yuan let out a cold snort that sounded like mockery.

The man continued, "Lu Zheng's injuries mean he won't wake up for a while even after the surgery. If you want to hold on until he wakes up, the best thing to do is to rest now."

Her calm and rational analysis, coupled with her cool tone, made Suwen doubt whether she was truly Lu Zheng's family.

Suwen fell silent. Hospital staff led her to a large suite, where a nurse carefully removed each shard of glass from her palm. Soon, a row of blood-stained glass fragments lay scattered haphazardly in an aluminum tray, a rather spectacular sight. The nurse frowned. For over ten hours, this glass had remained in her hand, while she had been tightly gripping a cell phone. She had only just managed to pry her fingers open to remove it; she couldn't understand how Suwen had endured it.

The inner room, separated by the screen, was quiet, except for the occasional "crack" of glass falling into the aluminum tray. She had no energy left to think about anything and sat blankly on the edge of the bed.

Later, she overheard some nurses chatting, saying that the patient they were looking after was someone of unknown background, and even Lu Wenyi had come in person. Looking at the entire platoon of guards at the entrance, one might mistake them for a national leader staying at their hospital.

Oh, no wonder she thought Lu Zheng's aunt looked familiar—it was Lu Wenyi! She recalled the woman who often spoke so eloquently on the news, and then thought back to her conversation with her last night, that innate air of superiority, and couldn't help but smile self-deprecatingly.

Her meeting with Lu Zheng turned out to be a clichéd prince and Cinderella story.

She visited him once after the surgery. Through the thick glass partition, his handsome face was covered by an oxygen mask, his entire body enveloped in white. The IV drips were tangled and finally secured to his arm with tape. The machines emitted a monotonous and cold sound. The entire ward was devoid of any sign of life, a recurring silence. For a moment, she thought the person lying in the bed was actually dead.

Lu Wenyi said that her condition has stabilized after the surgery, but she is too weak to wake up yet.

Suwen nodded as if she understood, and then she said, "Come with me, let's talk."

They sat down in the reception room of the hospital's luxury ward. Lu Wenyi's secretary poured her a cup of hot tea, which she held in her hands to keep from shivering from the cold.

The ward was actually heated, but for some reason, she felt cold all over.

Lu Wenyi took the tea and waved her hand. The secretary left, leaving only the two of them in the large reception room. They sat facing each other alone. She held her breath and waited for the negotiation to begin.

Lu Wenyi's expression was calm, even gentle as she greeted her, "Have some tea. The pre-Qingming Longjing is quite good."

She obediently took a sip, waiting for her speech to begin.

But Lu Wenyi didn't speak for a long time. Instead, she pinched her Jingming acupoint with her thumb and forefinger, leaned back wearily, and sank into the sofa.

She didn't sit up until the tea had gone cold, staring intently at her: "Has Lu Zheng mentioned his family to you?"

She honestly shook her head.

When they met, he didn't ask her, and she didn't ask him. She didn't care about his family at all; it was just a fling, consensual, and amicable parting. When Xiao Yuan appeared, she had her suspicions and guessed that Lu Zheng might come from a wealthy family, but she never imagined it would be such an unapproachable political family.

After a moment's hesitation, Lu Wenyi began to tell the story of Lu Zheng amidst the rising steam of tea.

Lu Zheng's maternal grandfather, Lu Haibo, held a high position for many years, and various factions had always tried to win him over. More than twenty years ago, an insignificant local official from Tianjin married Lu Haibo's most beloved youngest daughter, Lu Wenzhi. Unable to bear the thought of father and daughter being separated, Lu Haibo used his connections to transfer the minor official to the central government. At the beginning of their marriage, the couple were harmonious, and less than a year later, they had a son, Lu Zheng.

Lu Zheng was not originally surnamed Lu; he only changed his surname to Lu Wenzhi's after her death.

The minor official rose rapidly through the ranks thanks to the Lu family's connections, expanding his network of relationships within the central government and leading to more social engagements. Gradually, Lu Wenzhi noticed something amiss. One day, she followed her husband to a social event and unexpectedly caught him cheating on her.

Lu Wenzhi, who had been pampered since childhood, couldn't handle the shock and threw a tantrum, threatening to pack her bags and go back to her parents' home. Her husband, fearing the news would reach Lu Haibo's ears, repeatedly swore and promised to keep her. But their happiness was short-lived. His mistress, who had been indulging in a life of pleasure, came to their home, causing a huge uproar. The proud and arrogant Lu Wenzhi couldn't tolerate the mistress's instigation and insisted on a divorce.

Seeing that he could no longer coax her, the man resorted to force, forcibly confining Lu Wenzhi to the house while continuing to enjoy his life with his mistress outside. He and his mistress repeatedly mocked Lu Wenzhi in front of her, saying, "If it weren't for your powerful father, who would marry an arrogant and domineering young lady like you?" Seven years of marriage turned out to be a deception!

Lu Zheng was six years old then, and somewhat sensible. He had witnessed everything his father did to his mother, so one day when the man was not at home, he secretly ran to his aunt, Lu Wenyi, to complain. With Lu Wenyi's help, Lu Wenzhi finally escaped from her nightmarish family and returned to the Lu family.

To everyone's surprise, Lu Haibo firmly disagreed with the divorce.

Lu Wenyi knew that divorce was absolutely impossible in a family like the Lu family, but seeing her father and her beloved younger sister, who had been mentally unstable and on the verge of collapse, was unbearable. That damned beast, who had promised to love Wenzhi for life when he married her, was now imprisoning her in a tiny room of less than ten square meters. When she arrived, her sister, due to excessive stimulation and prolonged lack of sunlight, had already become somewhat mentally unstable.

She was still trying to reason with her father, but that damned man had the nerve to come to her door in person. He sincerely admitted his mistake to Lu Haibo and promised that he would devote himself to Wen Zhi from now on.

Lu Haibo sighed for a long time, but still had Lu Wenyi bring Wenzhi out.

She would always remember the terrified look on Wenzhi's face when she saw the man. She struggled and cried, begging Lu Haibo to let her stay. But the heartless Lu Haibo just waved her away.

On the way home that day, Lu Wenzhi and that man died in a car accident. According to witnesses, the car swayed violently from side to side on the elevated highway before crashing into the guardrail, overturning off the highway, and exploding, leaving no trace of their bodies.

She knew how unwilling Wenzhi was to die; after her husband's betrayal, her only hope, her family, had also abandoned her. Choosing such a violent way to die, to perish together with that unfaithful man, was indeed very much in line with Wenzhi's character.

Afterwards, Lu Wenyi took Lu Zheng in and raised him herself. She never married and treated Lu Zheng like her own son. Perhaps because of his lingering resentment over his mother's death, Lu Zheng always harbored resentment towards the Lu family. In fact, Lu Wenyi herself believed that the Lu family indirectly caused Wenzhi's death. If it weren't for the Lu family's status, and if it weren't for Lu Haibo's ruthlessness, Wenzhi would never have had to go back with that beast.

Lu Zheng left the Lu family as soon as he turned eighteen and came to the city alone. There, he met some idle hooligans and started making money by street racing. He never touched a penny of the allowance the Lu family gave him. Lu Wenyi always felt both love and regret for this child, so she didn't interfere too much.

Outside the window, the sky was a slightly grayish white. By the time they finished speaking, it was almost evening. The room was very quiet. The tea in her hand had gone cold, and Suwen was still lost in thought.

After a long while, she heard Lu Wenyi call her: "Miss Nie".

She suddenly raised her head, looking at her. After talking for so long, she knew that Lu Wenyi was finally getting to the point.

Lu Wenyi sighed deeply: "Ordinary people should stay away from the Lu family's mess."

Lu Wenyi was advising her to have self-awareness and turn back from her wrong path, and she knew it was for her own good. The reason she told her in such detail about Lu Wenzhi's tragedy twenty years ago was simply to sound an alarm for her.

She would naturally keep her distance from a family like the Lu family. But what did her concern for Lu Zheng have to do with the Lu family? She just wanted to see him wake up safely, that was all.

Su Wen nodded and said, "Thank you for reminding me. From the moment Lu Zheng bravely shielded me in the car, my life has belonged to him. For the rest of my life, as long as he needs me, I will stay by his side without hesitation. On the contrary, if he doesn't want to see me anymore, I will definitely stay far away from him."

Everything, simply because I love him. It has nothing to do with his family.

Lu Wenyi remained silent.

The conversation should end here. She stood up and bowed respectfully again: "Thank you again."

Lu Wenyi smiled slightly: "No need for thanks, of course I was more acting out of selfishness." She didn't hide her original intention. Su Wen, such an ordinary girl, was indeed not good enough for Lu Zheng, but she still kindly advised this stubborn and strong girl: "Life does require perseverance many times. But excessive obsession will only lead you into a dead end."

She stopped abruptly at this point. They went outside together to check on the unconscious Lu Zheng for a while, and she stroked the face of the person lying in the ward through the glass. Su Wen could tell that she loved Lu Zheng very much.

After a long while, she said, "If Lu Zheng doesn't wake up tonight, I'll have to take him back to the city for treatment." After all, the medical conditions in the city are much better than here, and she had left a lot of things to do there after rushing here.
