Chapter 42: Successful Experiment and Deployment
Back home, I quickly stored the parts in my spatial storage. The yard was piled high with rice stalks, so I used my spatial storage to collect and stack them together.
It's so easy to take the parts out of the space and place them on the open ground. Following her memory, she quickly assembled the parts. She pushed the roller, and after the roller was fully spinning, she grabbed a handful of rice ears and put them into the feed inlet with the rice stalks.
It was a bit difficult for one person to operate; she could only put in a small amount of rice ears, otherwise the roller wouldn't move. Holding onto the rice stalks tightly, she tilted her head to check the discharge port. A few seconds later, she heard the crackling sound of rice ears falling from the bamboo sieve below the discharge port. Looking at the rice stalks again, she saw that the threshing rate was 95%. She would wait for the two adults to return and then test the effect of grabbing a larger handful.
Not long after, footsteps were heard outside the door. The Lin couple returned pushing a cart. As soon as they entered the yard, they saw a large object on the ground.
"Mom and Dad, look!" She pointed to the threshing machine, her face beaming with pride. "It's a success! This machine can thresh grains quickly, and the threshing rate is quite high."
The couple were both surprised and delighted by what they saw. Lin ran over and, even on tiptoe, couldn't see the roller, so she stepped onto the stool where Qiao Jingjing had been standing to get a better look. Qiao Wanjun had heard his wife mention this machine before, but he never expected it to actually be made. Driven by a man's innate love for machinery, he stepped forward, observed for a while, and then tried it himself, grabbing a large handful of rice ears and putting them into the feed inlet. Qiao Jingjing helped push the roller, and once it started rotating smoothly, the rice ears fell into the bamboo sieve like raindrops.
The group was immediately captivated. Taking advantage of the remaining light, they decided to postpone dinner and begin threshing the grain. They replaced the sieve with a hopper, its wide opening and deep bottom perfect for catching the grains. Once it was nearly full, they used gourd ladles to scoop the grains into burlap sacks, which they then placed at the entrance of the main house to dry.
There were two acres of rice paddies in the yard, and a third of them had been threshed in just one hour. The three of them worked together: one pushed the roller, one placed the rice ears, and one passed them on. The threshed rice stalks were piled to one side; they could still collect some by threshing them with a mallet later.
The three of them stopped when it was completely dark. Exhausted and hungry, they didn't want to cook, so Qiao Jingjing made an excuse that she had left some steamed buns in the carriage and instead made twelve char siu bao (barbecued pork buns). They devoured them with well water. Already starving, the sweetness of the well water and the deliciousness of the char siu bao made them all eat with great satisfaction.
As Qiao Jingjing ate, she seemed distracted, as if she had forgotten something but couldn't remember it. "Never mind," she thought, "I'll stop thinking about it."
"Dad, go and turn over the paddy field closest to our house first thing tomorrow morning and fill it with water. Mom and I will go harvest the rice. I checked the seedling trays today, and it's almost ready to transplant the seedlings."
"Hey, good."
After a long day, the group found that eating steamed buns saved them the time of washing dishes. After finishing their meal, they washed up and went to bed. Before falling asleep, one of them wondered what they had forgotten.
Unaware that he had been forgotten, Xuan Yi stared longingly at the dilapidated door of the run-down house, feeling incredibly hungry! Wasn't dinner supposed to be delivered before dinner? It was just that his limited mobility prevented him from finding food himself. Otherwise, with his skills, hunting small prey would be a piece of cake.
Seeing that it was getting late and knowing that Miss Qiao wouldn't be coming, he had no choice but to go to sleep on an empty stomach, where he could dream about anything.
The next morning, Qiao Jingjing and Lin went to the rice paddies. Passing by the small, dilapidated house, they suddenly realized they had completely forgotten about the injured person inside.
He made an excuse to go back and get something, letting his mother go first. After Lin Shi had gone far away, he quickly looked around to make sure no one was there. He then took out several large meat buns, two goose eggs, two sesame cakes, and an outdoor water bottle, and put them in the small basket he was carrying.
As soon as she pushed the door open, Xuan Yi sensed the commotion and stared at the entrance. Qiao Jingjing entered and met Xuan Yi's pitiful gaze, feeling a little guilty. She had indeed said she would bring food in the evening, but she'd been caught in the threshing machine and completely forgotten.
"Ahem," Qiao Jingjing coughed twice, her fist pressed against her lips, to break the awkward silence. "I was too busy yesterday, I really couldn't get away. Are you recovering well? Here's some food and water for you. Um, I have to go out and get back to work." She slipped away as soon as she finished speaking.
Before Xuan Yi could utter a single word, his savior had already run off. Could she think I'm angry? She's my benefactor! How could I possibly be angry with her!
The aroma of steamed buns kept wafting into Xuan Yi's nostrils, but instead of eating them immediately, he was drawn to the water bottle. Qiao Jingjing was carrying an outdoor water bottle that looked like bamboo, with a capacity of 1500 ml. The lid could be used as a cup, and there were straps on both sides so it could be worn crossbody.
What amazed him was that this thing wouldn't spill water, no matter how much it was shaken. He studied it for a while before opening the cup, and was then astonished by the rotating rim. If this could be used in his master's military camp, it would be much more convenient during marches.
Thinking of his master, he wondered if he would send someone to look for him if he knew he was missing.
Meanwhile, Qiao Jingjing went to the field to harvest rice with Lin. With the help of the threshing machine, the two worked even harder to finish harvesting and return to thresh the rice as soon as possible.
During a break, Qiao Jingjing took out two popsicles with their outer wrappers torn off and handed one to Lin Shi, saying, "Mom, have something to cool down and avoid heatstroke."
Knowing her daughter's secret, Mrs. Lin didn't ask any further questions. Qiao Jingjing especially liked this about her mother; she would eat whatever she was given, never spoil the mood, and never ask any questions. She trusted her unconditionally.
"Mmm, so refreshing. No wonder rich people stock up on ice. It turns out eating ice in the summer is so refreshing." Lin finished the last bite with a look of enjoyment and continued to bend over and work.
Qiao Jingjing felt that bending over like this was too hard on her back. She remembered that there was a tool for cutting rice that didn't require bending over; you just held the tool and swung it at the rice stalks to cut off a whole section at once. She'd look up some more information about it later.
In two days at most, the seedlings will be ready for transplanting. Once transplanted, the whole village will know that her family is growing two rice crops a year. Her hands continued moving as she spoke, "Mother, I plan to talk to the village head about growing two rice crops. If it really works and the yield actually increases, I'd like to promote this method. What do you think?"
Madam Lin knew what her daughter was thinking. "Of course it's fine. Would I stop you from doing a good deed? It's just that your second and third uncles from the Qiao family, as well as your grandparents, have never gotten along with us. Otherwise, why would our family have left them out and only planted the crops ourselves? Who knows what nasty things they would say then. I don't want you to do a good deed and then have to put up with all that trouble."
Qiao Jingjing chuckled, "I can't be bothered with them. It's much more comfortable since we're not in the same courtyard anymore. I think Dad has started to come to his senses lately, so I'll just trust him for now."
Also, my uncle's family can send some rice seedlings over when they have time. We'll leave my aunt's family for now; if the planting fails, it will be difficult for her to explain to her in-laws.
