The Walking Dead: I Sell Arms as a Sixth-Rate Seller in the Apocalypse

Chapter 74 The Calm Before the Storm: The Reconnaissance Team Sets Off!

10:45 am

Atlanta Police Department

At this moment, the area outside the police station was crowded with people, including snipers on the watchtower and guards standing guard outside.

When Brian and Rick arrived late, Tompney didn't say anything. He gave Brian a look, then stood on a police car and shouted down.

"Gentlemen, I won't say any more. After we finish today, we'll move to a better and safer place, provided that everyone returns safely. Now, team leaders, please start dividing into groups."

Listening to Tompney's utterly useless nonsense, everyone lined up in the previously assigned groups, except for Rick and his gang, who stood alone to the side. Everyone's attention shifted from Tompney to Rick and his gang.

Daryl and Moore felt extremely uncomfortable under his gaze, while Rick calmly spoke to Tompney.

"Boss, I've recruited these two men and they've joined the team protecting you."

Tompenny looked at Daryl and Moore with suspicion, then asked.

Can you guarantee they will protect my safety unconditionally?

Rick patted his chest and assured him.

"Don't worry, nothing will happen with me watching over things. If it really comes to it, let the two of them go first, and Captain Brian and I will follow behind."

Brian nodded to Tompney, who then said nothing more and continued speaking to the crowd.

"Team A is led by Brian, Team B by Karls, and Team C by Hill."

After Tompney finished speaking, the people below quickly formed three lines, with only Rick and the others standing outside without entering.

"Thompney continued."

"After entering the research institute, Teams B and C will take the rail elevator to the main gate and enter through the main gate and cargo transport warehouse respectively. Kill whatever you see without mercy. If you encounter the giant zombie, immediately report your location using the tactical walkie-talkie."

Hearing Tompney's mindless command, everyone was utterly disappointed, especially Karls and Hill. Seeing their men staring at them expectantly, the two decided to go their own way after the operation began and no longer obey Tompney's suicidal orders.

Moore frowned as he listened to Tompney's words and whispered something in Rick's ear.

"Boss, are we really going to follow the orders of this idiot upstairs?"

Rick responded in a low voice.

"Let's leave it at that for now. We'll make further plans after we've completely cleared the zombies from the research institute."

Daryl then joined in and said.

“I propose that I handle this stupid pig.”

Rick rolled his eyes at Daryl, annoyed.

"Now is not the time to discuss this. Once the operation begins, you two will listen to me, especially you, Daryl. You can't wander too far on your own. This operation is much more dangerous than the last one. Follow orders in all actions, understand?"

"Yes, yes, you are the boss, you have the final say."

Seeing Daryl's pathetic state, Rick wished he could kick Daryl's butt right now.

ten minutes later.

The group, having split into teams, arrived at the gate of a warehouse behind the police station.

Two guards had already opened the warehouse door, and through the light, they could see that two ramp lifts were ready to go.

At this point, according to Tompney's plan, Karls' Team B and Hill's Team C would each board a ramp elevator and depart first, while Brian, who led Team A, would wait for the second trip.

Just as the two teams were about to go up, Rick suddenly stopped them and said to Tompney.

"Boss, I think we should send a reconnaissance team down to investigate first. If we send everyone down, there could be heavy casualties in case of an emergency."

Upon hearing Rick's words, Carls and Hilton's eyes lit up, and they immediately stopped their moving procession.

Tom Penny, however, expressed some dissatisfaction.

"Wouldn't doing this be a huge waste of time?"

Upon hearing this, Hill and Carl wished they could pull out their guns and shoot their idiot boss, Tompenny, right then and there.

Rick continued to explain.

“Boss, this isn’t just for the others, it’s for you too. After all, none of us know how many zombies are down there, and there’s also a lord-level zombie. If we don’t know the location of that zombie, our team might be wiped out. Even if Team A stays behind to protect you, who can guarantee that Team A won’t be wiped out?”

Upon hearing Rick's words, Tompney fell silent, beginning to ponder Rick's words with his long-rusted brain.

Tens of seconds later.

Seeing that Tompney was still hesitant, Rick volunteered.

"Boss, you just need to let me choose a few people, and I will personally lead the team to conduct reconnaissance. I have the ability in this area, so please rest assured."

Upon hearing this, Thompney nodded and said...

"Alright, I'll give you the right to choose your personnel. Go and select them."

Upon hearing this, Rick shouted to the people below.

“Darryl, Moore, Brian, Iver, Cruise, Francis, that makes six of you.”

Tompney didn't say anything upon hearing this. Apart from Moore, Daryl, and Francis, the other three were all his own people. Although he didn't know why Rick had chosen all his own people, what Rick had just said was for his own safety. In addition, since they were all his own people, he could send them down to scout ahead and find a safe place for him to command. After everything settled down, he could come out and bring the ready-made people back to the ground.

Thinking about this, Tompney felt he was a real genius, and then nodded to Rick.

On the other hand, Everle and Cruise looked as ugly as if they had eaten a kilogram of Olivia. They weren't stupid; this was tantamount to going down to their deaths.

But they dared not disobey Tompney's orders, so the two men, their faces pale, stepped forward and joined Rick's group.

Blake, looking on with surprise, pointed to himself at Rick.

Rick saw this and nodded with a smile.

"Brother Lao, please give me your guidance."

Hearing this, Brian stared intently at Rick. He wasn't stupid; he knew that this bastard dragging him down with him was bound to cause trouble. After saying this, he weighed the fully modified AR15 in his hand and stood behind Rick.

When Thompson saw that Rick's men had arrived, he had the backup generator started. As the generator roared, the lights in the warehouse gradually came on.

Rick led the six men to the number one ramp elevator, and then started the elevator, heading into the deep, dark underground.

On the ramp lift, Everle grabbed Rick by the collar and roared.

"You selfish bastard, if you want to die, no one's stopping you, but why are you dragging me down with you?"

Seeing his boss being grabbed by the collar, Moore was about to raise his MG388 and point it at Eiffel when Brian lowered his gun and shook his head at him.

At this moment, Cruise stood behind Iver, ready to teach Rick and the others behind him a lesson at any time.

Just then, Rick stared coldly at Aveer, his eyes radiating a murderous aura that seemed to threaten to kill Aveer at any moment. When Aveer met Rick's gaze, he trembled, cold sweat beading on his forehead. He felt as if he were being stared at by a ferocious beast; those dark, emotionless eyes were telling him that if he spoke disrespectfully to the man before him, he would be killed in the next instant.

Thinking of this, Ivor released Rick, while Cruise looked at Ivor with confusion. He knew his good partner's temper well, but why was he acting like a cowardly loser now?

Just as tensions were about to escalate, Brian jumped in to mediate.

"Alright, stop arguing. We haven't even started the operation yet, why are you fighting amongst yourselves? Everl and Cruise, you two are the best reconnaissance duo in the SWAT team. Rick and I recommended you two."

Rick looked at Brian with a blank expression. He didn't remember Brian ever saying that. He had chosen Iver and Cruise to use them as cannon fodder and to vent Daryl and Moore's anger.

Before Rick could speak, Brian continued.

Do you know why you two were chosen for this operation?

After hearing Brian's words, Iver and Cruise had already shifted the blame to Brian, but upon hearing Brian say this again, they both shook their heads and stared at Brian once more.

"You two know about Colonel Dross, right?"

The two nodded.

"This mission was commissioned by Colonel Dross. One of the benefits that Tompney gained by cooperating with Colonel Dross was to leave here and join the military base where Colonel Dross is located."

The two nodded again upon hearing this.

"Although reconnaissance is dangerous, it is also the safest. You two should know that once you figure out the layout of the rooms in the underground research institute, you can deduce where it is safe, where there are good things, and where you can avoid danger."

Hearing this, the two men's resentment towards Brian lessened somewhat.

“When it comes time to reward merit, we can go see Colonel Dross together. Following Tompney is just so-so. If you two perform well, can't you switch sides and follow Colonel Dross? Isn't that better than following Tompney?”

Standing to the side, Rick listened to Brian's ramblings, so embarrassed he felt like he could dig out a two-bedroom, one-living room, one-bathroom, and one-kitchen apartment with his toes.

Francis, on the other hand, stood expressionless a short distance away, staring intently into the darkness below.

After hearing Blake's words, Avery and Cruise were silent for a moment before speaking.

“Alright, Captain Brian, when it comes time to reward those who have done their part, you must give us two a shout-out. We'll be in charge of the reconnaissance.”

After hearing that Brian had successfully tricked the two idiot brothers into joining him, Rick grinned and handed out a cigarette to everyone.

And so, the group smoked their cigarettes, enjoying the calm before the storm.

A few minutes later, the elevator arrived at the destination of this operation: the Atlanta underground nuclear shelter.
