I thrived in the primitive tribe
Chapter 57 Sharing food
The tribespeople who had gone out returned happily, carrying heavy wicker baskets filled with fish and shrimp. The afterglow of the setting sun shone on their faces, reflecting their joy.
Loya took the wicker basket from the returning tribesman and placed it next to Lu Yao. Lu Yao curiously peered into the basket and saw fish and shrimp thrashing about, full of life. The fish, with their silvery scales, leaped and thrashed about, while the palm-sized shrimp flailed their antennae and bounced incessantly.
Even more surprising, at the bottom of the basket were some crabs waving their large pincers and baring their claws. Their shells gleamed faintly in the sunlight, making them look quite majestic.
Looking at the dazzling array of seafood, Lu Yao's eyes lit up with joy. Thinking of the delicious river delicacies, her mouth involuntarily watered.
"So much! It looks so delicious." Lu Yao's eyes sparkled with excitement as she muttered to herself, her voice filled with longing and anticipation for the huge pile of fresh river delicacies before her.
Seeing Lu Yao's expression, the people around her all smiled indulgently. Looking at the steaming earthenware pot, they asked curiously, "What are you cooking? It smells so good, I can smell it from far away."
"Yes, yes, it's really tempting."
Everyone sat around the fire, the firelight reflecting on their faces, creating a warm and harmonious atmosphere as they chatted and laughed.
"These are stag cubs that the wolf pack brought us." Loya suddenly pointed to the wolves eating over there, his voice carrying a hint of surprise.
Everyone's gaze followed the direction Loya pointed and looked toward the wolf that was devouring its prey.
"They actually brought us prey on their own initiative?" Everyone's faces were filled with disbelief.
“Yes, I was surprised too,” Loya nodded and continued, “Maybe it’s thanking us for saving its mate.”
"This is unbelievable!" someone exclaimed.
Lu Yao glanced at the earthenware pot. The meat inside was already very tender. She stirred it with the twig in her hand and felt it was ready. She added some salt, stirred it again, and tasted it. It tasted quite good. Then she poured it into an earthenware bowl, intending to let it cool down before sending it to the mother wolf.
The others processed the still-throwing river fish, putting one into a clay pot to make fish soup. Then they found evenly sized branches, skillfully skewered the fish, and handed it to their companions who were grilling meat nearby. They then continued processing the remaining ingredients.
As the meat and fish slowly turned over the fire, golden oil dripped continuously into the flames, sparking tiny flames and releasing an even richer aroma. The person grilling the food occasionally sprinkled salt evenly over the sizzling food.
The aroma grew increasingly strong, attracting the attention of several wolves who were tearing at their prey in the distance. They simultaneously stopped biting and raised their heads to look at the source of the fragrance. They sniffed the air, savoring the scent.
The alpha wolf was also attracted by the strong aroma. It stopped lying next to its mate and looked up in this direction. The two wolf cubs beside it were also drawn in and howled. However, they did not run towards the wolf because of their father. But their howling seemed to be urging their father to find the source of the aroma for them. They were hungry.
Lu Yao noticed the commotion and touched the meat broth that had been left to cool, then took some roasted deer meat.
"Loya, I'm bringing some food to the alpha wolf." Lu Yao gestured to the things in her hand.
Luya already knew what Luyao was thinking from her actions. Hearing Luyao's words, he handed the food he was making to his companion, stood up, looked at the alpha wolf, and bent down to take the earthenware pot for simmering soup.
“I’ll go with you to see the situation over there. Your catch probably isn’t enough. We’ve caught quite a few river fish too. Let’s give them all. I think the little wolf is hungry.”
Lu Yao looked at Luo Ya's actions in surprise. She didn't expect that he would not object to her actions, but instead agree with her thoughts.
The two men, carrying food, walked towards the alpha wolf. The alpha wolf, seeing the two approaching, did not let its cubs stray far away. The two little creatures continued to howl at their father. Perhaps sensing their father's unusual behavior, the two cubs slowly stopped howling and turned to look in the direction their father was looking.
"Why are these two two-legged creatures here? What are they holding? It smells so good, I want to eat it!" The two little cubs exchanged glances, their stomachs rumbling loudly.
He turned to look at his father, wondering if they were here to offer him tribute, just like the wolves before.
The two little ones turned back and looked expectantly at the thing that the two-legged creature was holding in its hands.
As Lu Yao and her companion passed by, they saw the alpha wolf staring at them warily, while the two wolf cubs looked at them expectantly. The two were puzzled by the situation.
"Wolf leader, thank you for bringing us food. This is some we've prepared that we can eat. We've brought some over for you to try." Then Lu Yao looked at the still unconscious mother wolf on the ground.
“Your partner hasn’t woken up yet and can’t eat the prey you’ve caught, but it also needs nutrition. I’ve stewed the antler meat until it’s tender, so you can feed it to it.”
As Lu Yao spoke, she handed the ceramic bowl in her hand forward. The wolf leader, An, turned his gaze to the ceramic bowl in her hand, then turned to look at his companion lying on the rock. After thinking for a while, he took a few steps back, indicating that Lu Yao should feed his companion.
Just as Lu Yao was about to step forward, the alpha wolf took two more steps forward, its eyes fixed on the ceramic bowl in Lu Yao's hand.
Loya pulled Lu Yao back as she was walking forward. Lu Yao turned around and looked at him with a puzzled expression. Loya gestured for Lu Yao to look in the direction of the alpha wolf. Lu Yao turned her head and saw that it was staring intently at the ceramic bowl in her hand.
He lowered his voice and asked Loya, "Does the alpha wolf want to eat too?"
“I don’t know either. I haven’t had any in-depth communication with the wolves. Why don’t you put him on the ground and we’ll observe what happens?”
“Okay,” Lu Yao put the ceramic bowl in her hand on the ground, and then the two of them stepped back a short distance.
"Look, they've put the food on the ground, let's go try it!" The two wolf cubs ran towards the pottery bowl, but were stopped by the howl of the alpha wolf.
The wolf leader first lowered its head and sniffed, finding nothing unusual, then licked some food with its tongue. The wolf then turned its head to look affectionately at its mate. After a while, the alpha wolf led the two cubs back to their previous position, even taking a few more steps back, and looked up at Lu Yao and the other person, gesturing with its head for them to come forward and feed their mate.
"Is it afraid we'll poison the soup and harm it halfway through, so it's testing it itself first?" Lu Yao asked in shock.
“Looks like it~” Loya also looked incredulous, marveling at the alpha wolf’s intelligence and loyalty to its mate.
The two quickly fed the mother wolf the meat broth from the earthenware bowl. When they felt it was almost ready, they handed the roasted meat to the alpha wolf. Seeing that it didn't seem inclined to eat, they placed the meat on a leaf next to the mother wolf, then poured the meat broth from the earthenware pot into the earthenware bowl and placed it on the ground, gesturing for the two cubs to come and eat.
"Is this land for us?" The two looked up at their father, their eyes filled with longing.
The alpha wolf glanced at Lu Yao and the other girl, then looked down at the children beside it. It gently nudged the two little ones with its nose, and as if receiving a signal, they happily ran to the earthenware bowl and began to eat noisily.
