I thrived in the primitive tribe
Chapter 46 Reflections on Hunting Methods
The leader and his men rushed back to the trap's location without stopping. On the way, they encountered two people carrying a Humming Beast. It turned out that not long after they left with their prey, the strong smell of blood had attracted several Carnotaurus. Remembering the leader's instructions before leaving, they discussed that before the Carnotaurus arrived, the two of them would quickly carry an adult Humming Beast away from the location to avoid a conflict with the Carnotaurus.
The two groups looked at each other, unsure of what to do: continue on to see if they could snatch a few more prey, or turn back to their tribe.
Everyone was waiting for the leader to speak.
The moment the chief saw the two, he knew that the prey left behind had attracted other predators, and rather powerful ones at that; otherwise, the two wouldn't have been carrying a humming beast back to the tribe. After thinking for a moment, the chief feigned nonchalance.
"It seems we're not needed anymore. Everyone's had a long day, so let's turn around and head back to the tribe. Maybe we can enjoy some freshly made food when we get back."
Hearing the leader's words, the group exchanged glances but said nothing. There was nothing they could do; the scene was too gruesome to conceal, the stench of blood was too strong, and the sense of smell of the nearby predators was extremely keen.
And so, the group began their return journey. Everyone was quite happy along the way; today's hunt had gone incredibly smoothly. The tribesmen had accomplished what seemed like an impossible task with minimal effort.
The group talked amongst themselves, discussing whether they could use the same method in future hunts, such as setting up obstacles and using traps, to reduce the harm suffered by their people during the hunt.
"Chief, could we try to make some tools like the firecrackers Lu Yao made today? You see, although they are not very lethal, they are very effective at driving away wild animals."
The loud noise produced when the firecrackers are lit is deafening enough to frighten the surrounding prey, causing them to scatter and flee.
After thinking about it carefully, I realized that this is quite useful when facing a herd of beasts. When wild animals are terrified, they often collide and trample each other in their panic. In this way, we can take advantage of their chaos to catch our prey without much effort.
Moreover, if used well, we might be able to pick off the survivors directly, just like today. Many adult Humble Beasts were injured by their own kind, so we didn't even need to intervene. We just needed to finish them off at the last moment to confirm whether they had lost vital signs.
“Yes, Chief, I think so too. Today’s hunt really surprised me. I never thought hunting could be so simple and easy. Thinking about how we did it before, no matter how careful we were, our people would still suffer some injuries every time we hunted. If we could do it like today in the future, wouldn’t we not only be able to get enough food, but also reduce the damage from battles?”
"Yes, I think we can further improve upon the existing firecrackers to make them even more effective. For example, we could increase their burning time to allow them to play a greater role, or find a way to amplify the sound of the firecrackers to better deter wild animals. This way, we would have more options when facing wild animals and be able to better protect the members of the hunting team."
“I’ve thought about what you’ve said. Since ancient times, our hunting method has been hand-to-hand combat. We’ve never thought of relying on external forces. Today’s hunt, Lu Yao’s method has also given me quite a shock. I share the same thoughts as everyone else and am also considering changing our hunting methods.”
Although strength reigns supreme in the orcish world, I still highly recommend methods that reduce casualties among our tribe. I'm thinking, if we hadn't been so complacent and relied solely on our own strength, but instead tried to change our hunting methods, wouldn't our tribesmen have avoided injuries and even deaths from hunting?
"Chief, this is not your fault. None of us had thought of any other way to hunt. We have always lived according to the methods passed down from our ancestors, and there is nothing wrong with that. It's just that the divine messenger has brought us a new direction. I believe that our tribe will definitely get better and better in the future..."
As they walked, the group discussed their takeaways and insights from the mission. Excitement and anticipation for the future shone on each face. Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting dappled shadows that added an air of mystery and solemnity to their figures. Their silhouettes gradually disappeared into the lush green depths of the forest.
When the tribal patrol saw the chief and his men return, they came to greet them. They hadn't known what had happened before, only that the chief had hurriedly led his men out of the tribe after putting down the prey, and they assumed something had gone wrong.
"Chief, we just saw you running out anxiously. Is something wrong?" the hunting party members asked anxiously.
"It's alright. We had too much prey when we were hunting before, so we couldn't bring it all back at once. We were just thinking of quickly moving the rest of the prey back to the tribe."
"Then what's this?" The man looked puzzled as he saw that the leader and the others had nothing in their hands except for the two who hadn't returned earlier, who were carrying a Humming Beast.
"We arrived too late. The smell of blood over there attracted the carnivorous carnivores from the vicinity. We didn't want to get into a conflict with them, so we returned to the tribe," the chief explained.
"Oh, I see. It's good that you're alright. You've caught a lot of prey today. How did you manage that? You'll have to tell us about it after our shift ends." Someone from the hunting team said excitedly to the people in front of them.
Hearing that everything was alright, the patrol captain bid farewell to the chief and his team, leading them to continue patrolling the area around the tribe to protect its safety and remain vigilant against any wild animals or tribes posing a danger.
Watching the patrol team walk away, the group took their prey and entered the tribe. After a day of chaos and fighting, they were covered in the smell of blood and sweat. The chief told everyone to go back to the cave to clean themselves up first, and then have dinner in the square. He and a tribesman carried the Humming Beast to the place where Arthur was making jerky.
"Arthur, how's the jerky coming along?" The chieftain could see Arthur constantly turning over and inspecting the jerky hanging on the shelf from afar.
"Chief, you're back?" Arthur said with delight.
"The beef and animal meat we brought back last time has been dried and stored in the pottery that was fired a few days ago. The meat we are processing now is from the ancient horse and is still in the drying stage."
"Okay, keep an eye on the stored food. If there are any problems, go to Lu Yao and see if she has any solutions."
"Rest assured, Chief, I have been keeping an eye on it. This is what our tribe uses to fill our stomachs during the cold season; it's our guarantee of survival. If anything goes wrong, I will immediately seek the help of the divine messenger."
"That's good. This is the Humming Beast we hunted today. The food for today is already in the square. As for this one, see what you think we should do with it and store it away."
"Yes, Chief, I understand."
After putting down their prey, the chieftain glanced at the dried ancestral horse meat hanging in the wind, and the two went back to the cave to clean up. Arthur was left alone to think about what Lu Yao had told him before, and how to deal with the Humming Beast.
