Chapter 44 Capturing the Humming Beast (3)
Lu Yao and the others watched nervously as the leader and his companions strode toward the trap, keeping a close watch on them, fearing that the wild beasts lying on the ground might suddenly attack and injure their people.
Although they appear to have lost their ability to move, the reason for this is uncertain.
Lu Yao recalled how the beasts had charged at her, and some guesses gradually formed in her mind. It was possible that some of them had been trampled after being knocked down while running; or perhaps the deafening sound of the firecrackers had frightened the cubs into unconsciousness.
Although she couldn't confirm whether it was really true, she felt that her guess was pretty close to the truth, so Lu Yao was very worried.
The leader and his companions cautiously approached and saw the motionless Humming Beasts lying on the ground. They slowly walked over, fearing that the beasts on the ground might not be dead yet. After getting close, they did not touch them, but observed them. Finding no signs of aggression, they drew their bone knives and stabbed several adult Humming Beasts lying on the ground in their vital spots.
After confirming that all the adult beasts lying on the ground were dead and no longer posed any threat, the leader and his companions walked over to the cubs of the Hum Hum Beast, squatted down, and observed the condition of these cubs lying on the ground.
They found that some of the cubs had been trampled to death in the chaos, their tiny bodies devoid of any life.
Another group seemed to have been frightened unconscious by the sound of firecrackers. They lay on the ground, motionless, breathing weakly, but you could feel that the life force in the cubs' bodies was still very strong.
Some lay on the ground, panting, their eyes revealing a strong will to survive. They looked at the few people in front of them, breathing helplessly.
The group found some vines and used them to tie up the Humming Beast cubs who were only temporarily unconscious, to prevent them from waking up and causing unnecessary trouble for everyone.
After dealing with those, the leader left the injured but not yet dead ones unattended, intending to ask Lu Yao how to handle them later.
Next, they had to see what was inside the trap. The group walked to the carefully set trap and peered inside, hoping to see a live cub of the Hum Hum Beast.
The camouflage on these traps had been largely destroyed by the herd of animals; the leaves, branches, and soil covering them had all been overturned, revealing their true nature.
The traps were originally designed to capture cubs alive, so they weren't very big. Therefore, there was no fear of adult Humming Beasts inside. Everyone eagerly checked the traps one by one.
More than a dozen traps were set up and scattered throughout the area the herd would pass through, hoping to capture as many cubs as possible. However, while the idea was appealing, reality proved harsh.
Half of the land has been destroyed; some of the pit entrances have been trampled and deformed, while others have collapsed to varying degrees due to the impact of the herds of animals, losing their original function.
In the remaining, less damaged traps, the group discovered several living Humming Beast cubs – a truly unexpected and delightful surprise.
Some traps contained several cubs, huddled together for comfort. Some traps contained only one cub, while others, though without cubs, showed signs of struggle, suggesting that an adult animal's leg had accidentally fallen in and then managed to escape.
Seeing that there was no threat here, the leader waved to Lu Yao and the others, signaling that they could come over. The danger here had been eliminated, and it was safe now.
Lu Yao and the others had been closely watching the situation, eager to see how effective their traps were. When they saw their leader waving, they immediately rushed over.
Before we even got there, people were already asking us questions.
"So, did you catch him?"
Seeing the anxious look on the faces of the visitors, the group, who already knew the outcome, broke into big smiles. Seeing this, Lu Yao knew that everything was fine; at least they had caught a few live cubs.
"We caught them! We caught several live Humming Beasts. They're still in the trap. We'll wait for you to come and take them out together," someone said excitedly.
Lu Yao and the others gathered around the nearest trap, observing the cubs inside. Looking at the little animals trembling at the bottom of the pit, Lu Yao smiled happily. "From now on, the tribe will have its own raised Humming Beasts to eat. We won't have to risk hunting and still not have enough to eat."
After hearing Lu Yao's exclamation, everyone's hearts were filled with beautiful hopes and expectations for the future.
After carefully taking the Humming Beast cubs out of the trap and tying them up with vines, they were put into a vine basket and prepared to be carried back.
"Lu Yao, there are some injured cubs here. Should we take them back to eat, or what should we do with them?"
“Let me take a look,” Lu Yao said, walking up to the cubs lying on the ground, panting. She crouched down and carefully examined each cub, feeling their faint pulses and strong will to live. “These cubs have a strong will to live; they should be able to be saved.” She looked up at the chief, “Let’s put them all in wicker baskets and carry them back to the tribe so the high shaman can take a look and see if they can be saved.”
Everyone acted quickly, putting all the cubs into the wicker baskets. Feeling the powerful pressure emanating from the orcs, the cubs stopped struggling and quietly curled up in the corner of the baskets.
After packing up all the cubs to be taken back to the tribe, only the lifeless Hum Hum Beasts remained on the ground. Looking at the food on the ground, a sense of accomplishment welled up in the group, along with deep reflection on their hunting methods.
They calculated the distance to the tribe's territory and, considering the safety of the cubs and the weight of the food, decided that two people would stay here to watch over the animals while they made their way back. They would then return to retrieve the remaining prey.
The chief instructed the tribespeople who remained behind: "You two must remain vigilant and pay attention to your surroundings. The stench of blood here is strong and may attract other wild animals. If other wild animals appear before we return, you should go back to the tribe immediately and abandon the remaining prey."
Remember, the most important thing is to protect yourselves and not fight wild animals. We've already brought back a lot of game for the tribe, enough to feed everyone for several days. You two must not get hurt by the remaining game.”
After listening to their leader's instructions and watching the others move away, the two returned to their previous position where they had been observing the herd, keeping an eye on the surrounding area and waiting for their leader and the others to return.
