Chapter 32 Building the Pottery Kiln
The breeding arrangements have been finalized. Although we haven't caught any animals suitable for captivity yet, we don't know when we'll bring them back, so we need to put up a fence in advance, just in case we need them.
After discussing it with Da Wu, Lu Yao and Da Wu decided to go and check out the site first, delineate the enclosure area, and see how much wood or bamboo they would need.
Just as the two were about to leave, the orc in charge of the pottery kiln materials arrived.
"Great Shaman, Divine Messenger, we seem to have enough materials to build the pottery kiln. Would you like to come and take a look? If it's not enough, we'll go find more."
"Great Shaman, let's go take a look first. If possible, let's build a pottery kiln first, and then build a fence after the hunting party catches its prey. What do you think?"
"can."
The three arrived at the pottery kiln. Lu Yao saw a large pile of stones, more than enough to build a kiln. Several orcs stood nearby, watching her and awaiting her next instructions. Their leader had previously told them that the construction of the kiln was entirely under the divine messenger's command, and they shouldn't act on their own. So, after moving stones for a few days and feeling they had enough, they went to ask the divine messenger to check if there were enough stones and to see what to do next.
"We have enough stones. You can stop looking for stones for now. Next, we need to build a pottery kiln."
Lu Yao felt a little uncomfortable seeing the group staring intently at her.
"First, we use stones to build the kiln walls and bottom, making sure the stones fit together tightly with as few gaps as possible. We can use straw mixed with mud to fill the gaps. By the way, how is the fire resistance of these stones?"
The group looked at each other, wondering what Lu Yao was talking about.
"God... Lu Yao, what is fire resistance?"
"The fire resistance of a stone refers to its ability to resist thermal damage under high-temperature conditions, that is, the ability of a stone to withstand high temperatures without cracking, melting, or significantly altering its physical and chemical properties. Fire resistance is usually related to factors such as the mineral composition, structure, density, and porosity of the stone."
Seeing the bewildered expressions on everyone's faces, Lu Yao knew they hadn't understood.
“You should chip off a small piece from each stone and then heat it with fire. Under the high temperature of the fire, see if the stone cracks, softens, or deforms. If not, after the flames go out, pour cold water on it and see if the stone cracks. If it is intact, then the stone can be used to build a pottery kiln; otherwise, it cannot be used to build a pottery kiln.”
After hearing Lu Yao's words, the group immediately chipped off a few pieces from the rocks in front of them to test them. Perhaps it was good luck, or perhaps the rocks in this world were simply harder, but almost none of them cracked. Some had small cracks, but they weren't a big problem.
"I wonder where they found these stones?" Lu Yao thought to herself, but that didn't matter.
Lu Yao directed the others to build the kiln base, then she and the shaman mixed grass into the soil and filled the gaps between the stones. The kiln was intended for firing everyday items, so it didn't need to be very large. Since they didn't know how well the stones conducted heat, Lu Yao planned to build the kiln walls thicker to ensure the internal temperature.
After the kiln base was built, the group began constructing the kiln walls. Under Lu Yao's direction, they placed kiln doors at suitable locations on the walls for easy access and operation. The kiln doors were not made very large, allowing only one person to enter at a time. The kiln walls consisted of two layers of stone, with the space between them filled entirely with a mixture of straw and mud.
The group worked with great enthusiasm, sweat pouring down their faces. Several orcs had already removed their rattan clothing, and sweat dripped from their faces like beads from a broken string. As dusk fell, the tribe became lively, indicating that the hunting party had returned.
The weaving team stopped working early today, everyone wanting to see if they had caught any live prey.
The group came out to greet the hunting party. Seeing that they were still carrying prey, which was clearly dead, they looked disappointed. However, the prey was larger and more numerous than before.
The group of people walked towards the square with the hunting team. They ran into Lu Yao and her group. Judging from the direction they came from, they must have come from the pottery kiln. They were covered in mud.
"Has the pottery kiln already started construction?"
“Yes,” one of them replied.
When will it be completed?
"You should ask Lu Yao about that."
"Roughly estimated, it should take another 2-3 days."
Do you need a few more people?
"No need, everyone is busy right now and no one is free. A few of us can do it. It just takes a little longer."
"That's fine~"
"If the chief has nothing else, let's go back to the cave to pack up first, and then go to the square later."
"Ok."
The group parted ways and returned to their respective caves.
Lu Yao felt that after a day's work, she needed to wash herself with water, so she boiled some water.
"Great Shaman, I want to take a shower, do you want to wash up too?"
"I don't need to. I didn't do much today; I basically just stood around watching you guys work. I'm too old to do anything anymore."
Although the high shaman didn't say it, she was still very disappointed. She was getting old, and the tribe didn't let her do much work anymore. Feeling her body growing old and her strength constantly fading was very sad.
"No way! The Great Shaman is incredibly capable. First, you are an expert in herbs, able to identify and use various herbs to treat diseases and injuries. Second, you can communicate with the Beast God and convey his commands. Furthermore, you devise strategies for the tribe's development, appease the people, and enhance the tribe's cohesion and unity..."
"I'm not as amazing as you make me out to be..."
Seeing Lu Yao's anxious expression, she raised her hand to stop Lu Yao from speaking.
"Everyone is born, grows old, gets sick, and dies; this is an eternal cycle. I've lived so many years, and I'm already very content to see our tribe getting better and better before I die. From now on, I will pass on all my skills to you. If I'm gone in the future, you will be the new High Priest of the tribe. The tribe will be in your hands from now on. I know you will definitely develop the tribe even better."
Lu Yao's eyes began to redden, and she looked like she was about to cry.
"What are you doing? I'm fine now. I'm just telling you my plans. Don't cry. You can be sad when I'm really gone."
Hearing the Great Shaman's words, Lu Yao couldn't stop her tears from flowing. Since arriving in this unfamiliar era, the Great Shaman had been the kindest person to her, protecting her like an elder in her family. Whenever she thought about the Great Shaman being gone in the future, she felt heartbroken and sad.
He walked over, hugged the great shaman, and burst into tears.
"Alright, alright, I will try my best to live a few more years so that I can see our tribe grow stronger under your leadership."
"Yes, the Great Shaman will definitely see it," Lu Yao said firmly, her voice trembling with tears.
"Okay, stop crying. The water's boiling. I'll go out and keep watch so no one comes in. Didn't you want to take a shower? Go ahead and do it, dinner's about to be served."
The Great Witch released Lu Yao and led her out of the cave.
